Preventing and healing*
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
by Ellen Serber,
illustrations by Daniel Will-Harris Carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress disorders are preventable. The best possible scenario is never to develop symptoms, to work intelligently and to respect your body's needs. But if trouble does begin it is extremely important to act immediately, before the symptoms become a big problem. Pain and burning are the #1 indicators that something is wrong. The discomfort and pain can be in your fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, shoulder, neck, upper back or lower back. It is much better to take these preventative steps while you are pain-free, instead of waiting for major dysfunction. And if you are experiencing symptoms, you should see a health care professional immediately. Checklist for Prevention: The most important thing to do is to get up from your desk and move around every 1/2 hour. Take your eyes off your computer screen and gaze into the far distance. Drink a glass of water. Some computers have alarm clock functions which can be set to remind you to get up. If you don't have such a function there are shareware programs you can download which will act as a timer (there are many to choose from, go to www.shareware.com

NEUROMEDICINE
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a painful syndrome that involves the hand, wrist and sometimes arm. It is seen more often in women than men and usually occurs between 40 and 60 years of age. Several nerves travel from the spine, down the arm and into the hand which allows fine movements of the hand and fingers (i.e. handwriting, buttoning and fine coordination). One of these nerves, called the median nerve, is the one most affected in CTS. The median nerve travels through a very small space at the wrist, called the carpal tunnel. The nerve is surrounded by the carpal ligament, which is a thick band of fiber that gives strength and support to the wrist and hand. When this carpal ligament hardens, the nerve is pressed into the small space of the carpal tunnel. The nerve then becomes trapped in the tunnel, causing the symptoms you may experience.
Signs and symptoms
  • Numbness in the hand and/or fingers which often occurs at night and may awaken the person from sleep.

... Disease Index Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Statistics
  • Approximately 260,000 carpal tunnel release operations are performed each year and 47 percent of these are considered to be work-related. A 1999 study reported that 14% of the population surveyed complained of symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling in the hands, but only one in five of these people actually had CTS.
What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? There is a nerve called the median nerve that travels from the forearm into your hand through a "tunnel" in your wrist. Wrist bones form the bottom and sides of this tunnel; a ligament covers the top of the tunnel. This tunnel also contains nine tendons that connect muscles to bones and bend your fingers and thumb. These tendons are covered with a lubricating membrane called synovium, which may enlarge and swell under some circumstances. This swelling may cause the median nerve to be pressed up against this strong ligament which may result in numbness, tingling in your hand, clumsiness or pain.

Welcome to Bodymindresources.com’s class on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Today we will be discussing the anatomical occurrence of carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrists, what we can do to prevent it and treat it. Let’s begin. What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that occurs when too much pressure is placed on the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is a small passageway through which the median nerve, as well as the tendons that operate the thumb and fingers must pass. The location of the carpal tunnel is right at the base of the palm and wrist and it creates a tight fit even in a healthy structure. Sometimes, through repetitive and improper use of the hand and wrist, the tendons can become inflamed. When the tendons swell within the tight carpal tunnel, there is no longer enough room for everything to fit comfortably and this places pressure on the median nerve. This pressure creates tingling and loss of feeling in the hand. It can also inhibit your ability to pinch you thumb to your fingers.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
What are the symptoms?
Women are far more likely to have carpal tunnel syndrome than men. It can affect people of all ages. If you have this condition you will experience pain or aching, and tingling or numbness. The symptoms are usually worse in the thumb, index and middle fingers. Occasionally they are so severe that your whole hand feels affected and the aching may sometimes extend up into the forearm. You may find one or both hands are affected. If you are right-handed the right hand tends to be worse, similarly the left hand if you are left-handed. The symptoms are usually worse at night (when they may disturb your sleep), or in the morning when you wake. Hanging your hand out of bed or shaking it around will often relieve the pain and tingling. During the daytime the problem may not occur but some people find that it can be brought on by physical activities at work or home such as writing, typing, housework, knitting or DIY.
