Repetitive Strain Injury, or RSI, is a common, painful condition. Anyone who works in an environment that places repetitive strain on any part of the body, such as the wrist, hand or arm is prone to RSI.
For this reason, computer workers, musicians, athletes and construction workers tend to develop RSI conditions more frequently than people in less repetitive professions.

B ecause bones, ligaments and tendons cannot be compressed, the soft median nerve is the only component in the carpal tunnel that can be pinched. When the lubricating linings around the tendons thicken because of repetitive or too foreceful hand movements, the resulting pressure on the nerve causes pain, weakness, numbness, tingling or a burning sensation: carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Another Source for Self Care Another source of self care for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: We hear a lot about ergonomics, posture, wrist deviation, and exercises as self care for symptoms - or avoidance - of carpal tunnel syndrome. There is another self treatment for your kit of survival techniques and that is massage...specifically self massage. Carpal tunnel syndrome represents an impingement of the nerve by inflamed muscles. It stands to reason that reducing the swelling would be a practical approach. This is what is happening when the doctor gives you anti-inflammatories, but massage doesn't have the side effects and it's non-invasive. Beyond the inflammation caused by overuse or incorrect use of the hands and wrists, inflammation can have its source in fluid accumulation from old sports injuries, pregnancy, estrogen replacement, muscle anomalies, arthritis, your avocation and numerous other possibilities. If the area is inflamed and acute (having existed for less than 2 weeks), an ice massage may be in order. Get a paper or styrofoam cup, fill it with water and freeze. Tear the lip of the cup back and use the ice to massage your wrists and forearms. If the area is inflamed and chronic (over two weeks) massage the area from elbow to fingertips slowly and gently with your other hand. Circular motion on both sides works fine. Stroke up the arm after you finish massaging an area. Inflammation means that you need to work gently. Your finishing strokes should always be from the hand up the arm.

http://www.handsurgery.com/carpal.html
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Definition/Occurrence
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve which runs through the wrist to the hand becomes compressed. The problem involves the narrow bony passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel, through which nine tendons and the median nerve must pass between the arm and hand. In the wrist, the median nerve (the major "communication line" between the brain and the hand) is routed through a small passage bounded by the wrist bones (the carpals) and the tough ligament tissue connecting them (see diagram). Nine hard tendons also pass through this crowded "carpal tunnel". Because this structure is rigid, any influence that causes tissue swelling within the tunnel or reduces its size tends to compress and pinch the median nerve.
SYMPTOMS
  • Numbness and tingling sensation in one or both hands. Frequently accompanied by sharp pains radiating through the arm or shoulder. Muscle weakness of index and middle fingers and thumb. Discomfort / aching in one or both hands. Lack of feeling in hand may cause person to drop objects.

    Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
    How Serious Are They?
Currently, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects over 8-million Americans, and is costing the private business sector, government agencies and insurance companies more than 20 billion dollars annually in workers compensation alone. The overall cost of treating these disorders exceeds 60 billion annually when considering the cost of implementing ergonomic products, rehabilitation, physician visits, surgery, lost time from work, temporary help and job retraining. Musculoskeletal disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome, are among the most prevalent medical conditions in the U.S., affecting 7% of the population. They account for 14% of physician visits and 19% of hospital stays. 62% of the persons with musculoskeletal disorders report some degree of limitation on activity, compared with 14% of the population at large, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. REFERENCE MATERIALS:
    • The U.S. Department of Labor has concluded that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the "chief occupational hazard of the 90's"- disabling workers in epidemic proportions.

Many people pursue chiropractic care because of back, neckpain or headaches. Scientific studies support the effectiveness of chiropractic in helping these conditions.      However, good health is more than the absence of pain. It entails the body's ability to adapt to its environment. Why do some people get the flu and others don't? Reasonably, the bodies of those who don't are functioning better than those who do.      I have found people want more out of life than being free of pain. They also want to develop and perform at their best throughout all the stages of life.      This is why chiropractic care is so important for the health and well being of the entire family.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a group of symptoms in the hand which arise from pressure on one of the nerves that passes through the palm side of the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when tendons in the wrist become inflamed after being aggravated. It is treated by immobilizing the wrist in a splint to minimize or prevent pressure on the nerves.

You are in: Hand, Wrist, Elbow, and Shoulder Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Overview Carpal tunnel syndrome is a disease of the hand characterized by numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness. The disease typically affects the thumb, index, and middle fingers and is often particularly troublesome at night. A major nerve, specifically the median nerve, travels down the arm and enters the hand through the carpal tunnel, which is located in the central part of the wrist. In people with carpal tunnel syndrome, pressure in the carpal tunnel is higher than in unaffected people, and median nerve irritation occurs. Many conditions can cause increased pressure within the carpal tunnel and lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome was first described with broken wrists. A broken wrist can cause bleeding and swelling within the carpal tunnel leading to increased pressure within the carpal tunnel. Most people with carpal tunnel syndrome have no identifiable cause. It affects almost 5% of the population and is most common in middle-aged women. Carpal tunnel syndrome is diagnosed based on the complaints of the individual combined with physical tests and often electrical studies. No single test is definitive for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome. Instead, the person's complaints and test findings together lead to its diagnosis.

I had been having some soreness in my wrist, from mouse use and fishing.
