What is a cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy is a medical term used to explain that there is a heart (Cardio) muscle (myo) disorder or problem (pathy). There are four types of Cardiomyopathy:
Dilated Cardiomyopathy
Dilated Cardiomyopathy is a condition where the heart has become enlarged and the heart muscle does not pump as well as normal. As a result of this there are some occasions when the muscle of the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently around the body. When this occurs, it causes some fluid to build up in thelungs, which may give you that feeling of brathlessness as your lungs area little heavier witht extra fluid. This is called left heart failure. Now do not be alarmed at that term which simply means that the heart is not pumping as well as it should. It does not mean your heart will stop. There can also be a problem with the muscle of the right side of the heart to give one right heart failure. As with the left side, this simply means that the right heart is less good at pumping blood and this may cause fuid to build up inthe tissues and organs of the body, usually the legs and ankles, and the liver and abdomen.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a condition where there is an increased thickening of the heart muscle. The heart muscle may thicken in individuals as a result of high blood pressure or athletic training.

Cardiomyopathy in Cats
What is cardiomyopathy?
Literally, the term "cardiomyopathy" means disease of the heart muscle. More specifically, cardiomyopathy (CM) is a disease of the heart muscle in which either the heart walls thicken greatly ( hypertrophic and restrictive forms) or stretch greatly (dilated form). In either form, the heart's function is significantly compromised and leads to an eventual state of heart failure.
What causes cardiomyopathy?
Several causes of feline cardiomyopathy have been identified. A deficiency of taurine, an essential amino acid, will cause dilated CM in the cat. Taurine was deficient in many commercial cat foods until its deficiency was identified; commercial cat foods are now properly supplemented. Hyperthyroidism , a non-cancerous growth of the thyroid gland, can cause a variation of the hypertrophic form of CM. The restrictive form is associated with an unidentified inflammatory process within the heart muscle. However, many cases of CM are not caused by any of these processes, and we do not understand their origin.

(This sheet is a copy from the above website as of November 2001) Cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that causes the heart to enlarge and become weaker When we hear the word cardiomyopathy, we often think of a heart transplant. But most people with cardiomyopathy do not need a transplant. In fact, most patients are only mildly affected and can live normal lives. Cardiomyopathy damages the heart muscle, making it weaker and causing it to stretch. If the heart cannot keep pumping blood well enough, a condition called heart failure develops which needs special treatment. Cardiomyopathy is different to other heart diseases such as a heart attack, which damages part of the heart muscle and has a different cause. The normal heart The heart is a vital pump. It works non-stop for 70 years and more, sending blood to all parts of the body. To do this the heart muscle must keep as strong as possible. What causes cardiomyopathy? In most cases, tests can not show the cause, but the problem can still be treated effectively. Several known causes are:

Heart problems are not as common in felines as they are in humans, but cats are by no means immune to the heartbreak of heart disease. It's not currently known how many cats are affected, because no one has ever looked at incidence across the general cat population. Incidence can vary in different parts of the country, probably because of the gene pool present in a particular area. The most common problem among cats is heart muscle disease ( cardiomyopathy ) and it causes no end of trouble. Once your veterinarian has diagnosed cardiomyopathy, he will treat it accordingly. In most cases, cardiomyopathy is irreversible, but owners may be able to add years to their cat's life by diligently sticking to drug treatments and keeping excitement, adventure, and stress to a minimum. Owners won't necessarily prevent the progression of heart disease, but anything that keeps the heart from racing may help to prevent heart failure.

General Discussion Pediatric cardiomyopathy is a rare heart condition that affects infants and children. Specifically, cardiomyopathy means disease of the heart muscle (myocardium). Several different types of cardiomyopathy exist and the specific symptoms vary from case to case. In some cases, no symptoms may be present (asymptomatic); in many cases, cardiomyopathy is a progressive condition that may result in an impaired ability of the heart to pump blood; fatigue; heart block; irregular heartbeats (tachycardia); and, potentially, heart failure and sudden cardiac death.

My Story
My name is Rebecca. I am 32 years old. I decided to do this particular page in 2001 so people could get an idea of what has happened in my life the past few years. It has since been revised. My hope is that people might gain knowledge, understanding, and inspiration from my story.
I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma until 1981 when my mom and myself moved to Scio, Oregon. I attended schools in Scio and Salem until high school, when we moved to Newport, OR. I attended Newport High School until the end of my sophomore year when I moved to Corvallis. I played basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer throughout junior high and high school. I truly enjoyed athletics. I also played in the band all throughout school. I graduated in June 1990. I truly miss all the friends I made while living in Oregon. In July 1994, I moved back to Oklahoma City. In January 1995, I enrolled in the psychology degree program at Oklahoma City Community College. It turned out to be a major life-changing event. I learned many things, especially about myself, and met some great people. I enjoyed college. However, the last 8 months of my degree were difficult. I received my Associate of Arts in May 1998.
In 1992, I was diagnosed with

cardiomyopathy by Malcolm Dupries. The clinical signs of a dog suffering from cardiomyopathy do not appear over a long period of time.

CARDIOMYOPATHY
by Malcolm Dupries Cardiomyopathy is a term used to describe a condition which occurs to the heart muscle, when one or more diseases cause inflammation and scarring. This inflammation and scarring causes an enlargement of the heart itself, and the chambers within the heart dilate and become less efficient in supplying the body and organs with blood. The end result of a dog suffering from this condition is that the heart muscle will eventually weaken and the dog will develop congestive heart failure, and will die.
The articles that the author used in researching this condition stated that the reason dogs develop this condition is unknown, but assumed to be genetic. Exactly how it is inherited is not yet documented, however, the disease appears to be very breed specific. There are some mixed breeds of dogs that have been diagnosed with this condition, but it is extremely rare. The breeds of dog that have documented histories of cardiomyopathy are: Boxers, Cocker Spaniels, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherd Dogs, Golden Retrievers, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and Saint Bernards.
Doberman Pinschers have been most often used in the medical research on this condition. It is important to realise that a dog does not react to illnesses like a human will. The clinical signs of a dog suffering from cardiomyopathy do not appear over a long period of time. The signs often appear over a few days, when in reality, the disease starts at an early age, between two and five years of age. Researchers have discovered that male dogs are asymtomatic until the disease becomes severe, sometime between five and eight years of age. Female dogs are often asymtomatic until they are between nine and twelve years of age. Once the clinical signs appear the dog may already be in the stage of severe heart failure.

93. What Is Cardiomopathy? What Causes It?
A look at cardiomyopathy, the types, causes, diagnosing, symptoms, treatment and what to expect.
http://www.deborah.org/consumer/card.html
What Is Cardiomyopathy?
Cardiomyopathy : Cardiomyopathy is a general term for a number of diseases that weaken the heart muscle. There are three basic types of cardiomyopathy. Dilated Cardiomyopathy: Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common type. The ventricles are enlarged and weak and do not pump blood well. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy : Another type is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, also known as idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS). The heart muscle of the ventricles thickens, which causes the cavity of the ventricles to be smaller than normal. Restrictive Cardiomyopathy : The third type, and the rarest form of cardiomyopathy is restrictive cardiomyopathy. Again, the heart muscle walls of the ventricles become very thick. The History of Deborah Support Groups Lung Cancer Atrial Fibrillation ... A Personal Choice
What Causes Cardiomyopathy?
In many cases, no cause can be found for the cardiomyopathy, regardless of the type. Dilated cardiomyopathy may be caused by heavy alcohol intake, infection or inflammation of the heart muscle, pregnancy, high blood pressure, and/or chemotherapy. About 60% of the cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are inherited. The other 40% have no known cause.
