The medical information that follows provides a basic overview of cardiomyopathy and is not meant to be conclusive in its medical content. For more detailed information on a specific cardiomyopathy, please check the listed medical sites or, better yet, consult with your physician.
As mentioned previously, cardiomyopathy is a highly variable disease and a thorough medical examination is recommended to make the proper diagnosis and to assess the outlook.
When your child is first diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, there is a large amount of new information to absorb and the experience can be isolating. Most of the available sources will write specifically about the more common, adult forms of the disease, which may or may not apply to your child's condition. In some pediatric cases, the causes, symptoms and disease progression may be quite different from adults diagnosed with the same disorder.

CATS AND HEART DISEASE WHAT IS HCM? SYMPTOMS DIAGNOSIS Heart disease in felines usually comprises various forms of a defective heart muscle, or cardiomyopathy (cardio = heart, myo = muscle, pathy = disease).
Felines most commonly develop one of three different types:
DCM (Dialated Cardiomyopathy) leads to enlarged heart chambers due to a weakning of the heart muscle, and was relatively common until quite recently. Today it is rarely seen thanks to the adequate addition of Taurine in most main brands of cat food.
RCM (Restrictive Cardiomyopathy) is a form akin to HCM, and is often seen in older cats. It manifests itself in progressively poorer heart function with reduced ability to pump.
This leads to an accumulation of blood in the heart, and an enlargement of the atrium.
By far the most common type of heart disease in felines is HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy).
The rest of this article with deal mainly with HCM.
WHAT IS HCM? HCM, or Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, is a heart disorder in which the left wall of the heart grows and thickens. (Hypertrophic = thickening)

Gilead—The Israeli Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association

Who was Gilead?
Gilead Har’El was a young student of Architecture who led a very happy and complete life. True, he had Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy which prevented him to join the army with his classmates when he graduated high school, but he started his academic studies and really enjoyed it. True, he was not allowed to do competitive sports, but he found his compensation in doing art—drawing, photography, and more—and in giving and receiving love and warmth to his friends and family. One bright day Gilead was on the way back to the Technion after purchasing art supplies. A friend stopped his motorcycle where Gilead stood on the pavement and suggested to give him a ride. Gilead smiled, said “cool...”, and collapsed. A passing paramedic gave him immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and a mobile intensive care unit which arrived nine minutes later did its full repertoire—in vain. Gilead, 19 years old, died in the last day of his first undergraduate year...

What Is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy? (HCM)
Cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the muscle of the heart is abnormal in the absence of an apparent cause. This terminology is purely descriptive and is based on the Latin deviation. There are three types of cardiomyopathy: "hypertrophic", "dilated" and "restrictive". The main feature of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is an excessive thickening of the heart muscle (hypertrophy literally means to thicken). Heart muscle may thicken in normal individuals as a result of high blood pressure or prolonged athletic training. In Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), however the muscle thickening occurs without an obvious cause. In addition, microscopic examination of the heart muscle in HCM shows abnormal. The normal alignment of muscle cells is absent and this abnormality is called "myocardial disarray"
How Common is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy?
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a relatively uncommon heart disease. Its exact frequency is unknown. A paper issued by Dr. Barry Maron of the Minneapolis Heart Institute, August 1995, estimated that 1 in 500 births could be effected by HCM. In the United Kingdom it is estimated that approximately 10,000 people have the condition. It is not possible to estimate the number of affected people in the United States at this time. It is one of the goal of this organization to establish how many people in the USA are affected.

Meet Minxie
This isn't Minxie...but it looks like her when she was a kitten.
Minxie is a four-year-old American shorthair. She was adopted from a pet store. Despite being the cutest of the litter, no one wanted her because she was born with a heart murmur.
Minxie suffers from a very common feline heart problem called cardiomyopathy (for more info check Feline Cardiomyopathy ). If diagnosed early enough, the prognosis for your pet is usually positive. Minxie was diagnosed during her first year. Although on medication twice a day for the rest of her life, it is likely that she will live out her full life span.
TOTALLY WORTH IT!
Besides her regular yearly visit to the vet, Minxie also has to get echocardiograms once a year to monitor the progress of the disease (so far, so good!). It can be difficult and expensive caring for a pet with a disease like hers. Please spay/neuter your pet. Although we adore Minxie, we also realize that there are many cats out there with the same condition who can't find a loving home. If untreated, this disease is deadly. Many strays don't have access to the care required. Minxie was spayed at 6 months. It was a day-long procedure, and although she had some discomfort after the surgery, she recovered very quickly!

Cardiomyopathy in cats Cardiomyopathy literally means disease of the heart muscle. The term is reserved for those cases where the cause of the disease is unknown. There are a number of well recognised diseases which cause changes in the heart muscle and therapy in these cases is directed towards short term support of heart function while the primary disease is being treated. Examples include taurine deficiency, which can lead to dilation of the heart, and hyperthyroidism, which is associated with hypertrophy (enlargement) of the heart muscle. Terminology to describe primary (without demonstrable underlying cause) cardiomyopathies in the cat is complex. Most cases can be classified under one of three headings. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)
In this condition the heart chambers become enlarged due to weakening of the heart muscle which is no longer able to pump the blood out of the heart in sufficient quantities to meet demand. This is described as systolic failure.

Rush, DVM, MS in: Veterinary Clinics of North America , Nov. 1998, pp1459 for much of the information displayed on this page. Feline cardiomyopathies are of several kinds. Dilated and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathies are the most common. Dilated cardiomyopathy has been linked to nutritional deficiencies (e.g. taurine) and today is much less common than the Hypertrophic or variants of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. Idiopathic Restrictive (and Endomyocarditis-related excessive moderator band-related and endomyocarditis-related Cardiomyopathy is uncommonly diagnosed (or misdiagnosed) and can results from distortions of papillary muscle and/or chordae tendonae, either of which may become fused and/or distorted due to inflammatory cell infiltration and fibrous adhesions. Signs of left atrial dilatation and ventricular hypertrophy may mimic those of hypertrophic (and dilated) cardiomyopathies. In addition to the above specific cardiomyopathies, cats can also develop valvular disorders, some of which are idiopathic in etiology. . Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy , (HCM) may be primary (idiopathic) or secondary to other (metabolic) causes (excess cathecholamines, hyperthyroidism, acromegaly, hypertension). The remainder of this discussion will focus on the anatomical and physiological manifestations, the diagnosis and proposed treatment of
