Molecular Microbiology of Candida albicans Molecular epidemiology of bacterial pathogens ... Publications I) Molecular Microbiology of Candida albicans The yeast C. albicans is present on most humans as a harmless commensal organism. Thousands of yeast cells can be present in an individal, mostly in the gastrointestinal tract, without any ill effect. However C. albicans is also also the major fungal pathogen of humans. Infections can be localised, such as vaginal infections and oral infections, which cause a considerable degree of discomfort. In some patient groups, whose defence system is severely compromised (prematurely born infants, leukemics and burn patients), the yeast can turn into a deadly pathogen causing systemic infections- up to 50% of the patients infected die as a result. The incidence of such infections is increasing rapidly, especially in hospitalised patients. In New Zealand, such infections are now eight times more frequent than they were 9 years ago.Our reservoir of anti- Candida drugs is very limited, and these agents can have severe side effects. Development of new strategies for the prevention and treatment of candidiasis is therefore probably the most important challenge to be faced by medical mycology today. One of the prerequisites to developing such strategies is the knowledge of how

    Candida, Gluten, and Diet
This is a compendium extrapolated from books you might choose to add to your bookshelf, written by physicians and researchers, that deal with Candida, Allergies, Leaky Gut Syndrome, Gluten Intolerance, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Diet, as relates to alternative/complementary considerations in dealing with these problems. The following is from the book "Wellness Against All Odds" by Dr. Sherry Rogers, M.D.; Published by Prestige Publishing, P.O. Box 3068, 3500 Brewerton Road, Syracuse, New York, 13220. The question that is often asked, as relates to the leaky gut syndrome, is answered by Dr. Rogers, that either can cause either in her words, "The leaky gut can cause food allergy, and food allergy can cause the leaky gut." Once that occurs, any number of auto-immune diseases can develop, such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis, lupus, multiple sclerosis ALS, as any part of the body can be the target for food allergy, including our inside skin lining the gut, which can manifest as ulcerative colitis. Some people are so sensitive to gluten, (found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats, and other grains) that they react to the slightest amount, not even knowing that they are sensitive to it. Dr. Rogers explains that the gluten sensitivity inflames the gut to the degree that he the body will make antibodies to of intestinal bacteria and chemical additives in foods.

THE CMC WEB SITE The Web Site for Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis Information and Help We welcome enquiries from anyone who has been diagnosed with CMC or has the symptoms described below. What is CMC ? CMC is a rare condition caused by fungus ( and yeast ). It is also responsible for the common infection vaginal CANDIDIASIS or thrush. Candida also causes disease in the mouth (oral thrush ) an infection of the nail fold ( paronychia ) and it is also a common cause of nappy rash in babies. There are certain people who are unable to fight off CANDIDA. Most cases of thrush get better quickly with anti-fungal treatment and do not recur, but in a small number of people , thrush recurs quickly and it is difficult to cure. One condition that leads to many episodes of difficult to treat thrush is Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis ( CMC ) in which those affected have frequent, usually continuous thrush. This web site was published because my son Charles was diagnosed with CMC some years ago and I found that there was very little information or support 'out there' for people diagnosed with CMC or who had the symptoms but could not get a correct diagnosis. I now think I have found the best people in the UK to look after my son. David Holroyd webmaster and information :- info@candida.org.uk

Candida I. Definition: Candida or Monilia is a skin rash caused by a yeast living on normal skin of 80% of all people. In most people, the presence of this yeast on the skin is not visible. In some people, for unknown reasons, the yeast grows more actively and causes a red, itchy, scaling rash. The yeast likes warm moist areas and usually grows in the skin folds under the breast, stomach, and arm pits. II. Causes:
    • Candida is caused by a yeast called Candida albicans. Candida infection sometimes occurs as a result of antibiotic therapy. People with diabetes are more prone to getting the rash of Candida, but the rash can occur in anyone.
    III. Treatment:
    • A good treatment regimen is anti-yeast cream applied to the affected area twice a day followed by hydrocortisone cream (hydrocortisone 1% cream can be bought at the drug store without a prescription). These two medicines can be applied at the same time (okay to mix the two on the skin). The anti-yeast cream is only available with a prescription. Lotrimin cream is an over the counter anti-yeast cream that often works. Some doctors use pills to treat this condition. We only use pills for resistant cases because the pills have side effects.
