Facts About Pediatric Cancer
By the year 2010 it is expected that 1 in every 250 adults will be a survivor of some form of pediatric cancer. Childhood Cancer is still the number one cause of death by disease in children. Brain tumors are now the leading cause of cancer death in children under age 15. Children with leukemia, the most common form of cancer occurring in children, have an 80 percent chance of survival. (Although the statistics for infants and teens are not as encouraging.) While the statistics are improving along with medical technology, we have a long way to go in eradicating this disease. Lend your voice and share your story. You can make a difference. Contact the Lifeline if you are interested in Awareness and Advocacy.

This field, which CRI helped pioneer and develop, has been recognized throughout the world as offering great hope for the ultimate prevention and treatment of human cancer. For five decades, the Institute has been a sustaining force in cancer and immunology research. The Institute has supported more than 2,750 scientists and clinicians at leading universities and research centers worldwide. All such funding decisions are made by its Scientific Advisory Council consisting of 63 of the world's leading immunologists, including 4 Nobel Laureates, 24 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 23 members of the Academy of Cancer Immunology
On average, 90 cents of every dollar CRI raises goes directly to fund its cancer research and related programs. CRI is the only cancer charity in the U.S. to receive an A+ grade for fiscal disclosure and efficiency from the American Institute of Philanthropy.

125. Ellagic Acid Information - Ellagic Acid Cancer Alternative
Summary of clinical studies and cancer research on ellagic acid
http://www.ellagic-research.org/
Ellagic acid is usually made from red raspberries. This is the source of ellagic acid that has been tested as a cancer alternative. Ellagic acid comes in two concentrations. 1. 1% standardized ellagic acid extract. 2. 40% standardized ellagic acid extract. Ellagic Acid may be one the most potent ways to fight Cancer. Ellagic Acid, a phenolic compound, is a proven anti-carcinogen, anti-mutagen, and anti-cancer initiator! The Hollings Cancer Instititute at the University of South Carolina is doing a double blind study on a large group of 500 cervical cancer patients that has everyone excited. Nine years of study have shown that a natural product called ellagic acid is causing G-arrest within 48 hours (inhibiting and stopping mitosis-cancer cell division), and apoptosis (normal cell death) within 72 hours, for breast, pancreas, esophageal, skin, colon and prostate cancer cells. Clinical tests also show that ellagic acid prevents the destruction of the p53 gene by cancer cells. Additional studies suggest that one of the mechanisms by which ellagic acid inhibits mutagenesis and carcinogenesis is by forming adducts with DNA, thus masking binding sites to be occupied by the mutagen or carcinogen. Ellagic acid can be found in different foods. The Hollings Clinic has identified the red raspberry for their studies.

Research may help protect fertility of women in cancer therapy
WASHINGTON (AP) Women having cancer therapy may one day be able to avoid the ovary damage that often leaves them unable to bear children, researchers report. Scientists studying chemical and radiation damage to mice cells report promising results when the action of the chemical ceramide was blocked. But they caution that considerable work is needed before the method could be used in humans.

137. Meat: The Recipe For Prostate Cancer
Information about the link between eating meat and prostate cancer.
http://britishmeat.com/prostate.htm
MEAT
The Recipe For Prostate Cancer
In the West, prostate cancer is the second largest killer of men after lung cancer. A international study recently conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School showed that men who eat the most meat and dairy products run the greatest risk of dying from the disease. Published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (1998), the report confirmed that men who eat plenty of grains and nuts are the least likely to die from prostate cancer. The study was based on a survey of cancer deaths in 59 countries. It corroborated the results of earlier investigations into the role of a meat-based diet in cardiovascular disease and cancer. A higher intake of cereals, nuts and oil seeds, on the other hand, has a protective effect. Thus the plant-based diets found in many less-advanced societies are the healthiest - as long as people get enough to eat. "For prostate cancer and cancers of other sites that are sensitive to serum (blood) hormone levels, animal fat may influence the risk for cancer by raising adult's sex hormone levels", the report notes. The third-biggest cancer killer in the United States is colon cancer - another thoroughly nasty disease. Colon cancer, too, has been strongly linked with a diet high in animal fat and low in fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products.
