Summary of Swiss study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology that studied 1300 women.

INVOLUNTARY SMOKING CAUSES BREAST CANCER TOO
Being around people who are smoking, even as little as one hour a day, can almost triple a woman's risk of contracting breast cancer, the second leading cause of deaths among all American women, and the leading cause of death among middle-aged women. This is the finding of a new study Dr. Alfredo Morabia recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Morabia headed a team of researchers from the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, that analyzed the smoking habits and exposure of nearly 1300 women. Among their findings:
  • Just smoking fewer than 10 cigarettes a day was enough to double a woman's risk of breast cancer.
  • Smoking 10 to 19 cigarettes a day saw the risk jump almost five fold.
  • Women who were exposed to cigarette smoke for one hour per day for 12 consecutive months nearly tripled their risk of contracting this deadly disease. More women die of breast cancer than from any other cancer. It is now the second leading cause of death in American women. Last year doctors diagnosed cancer of the breast in 182,000 women, and 46,000 died from it. It kills more middle-age women than any other disease. Every fifteen minutes at least three women will develop breast cancer and one will die.

Epidemiological studies examine factors that are associated with developing diseases. Since entire populations usually cannot be examined, epidemiology relies on sampling smaller parts of the overall population and, using statistics, generalizing those results to everyone. When you read that eating more fiber is (or is not) good for preventing heart disease, you are reading the outcome of an epidemiological study. One of the most important things to remember whenever you read an epidemiological study is that it reports ASSOCIATIONS and not causes. It takes well-controlled, laboratory or clinical studies to prove CAUSATION.

    119. Breast Cancer, Breast Feeding And Tobacco Smoke
Early studies treated secondhand smokers as if they were nonsmokers, which actually masked the evidence; later studies separated out the two, and found that both active and passive smoking are causes of breast cancer.
    http://www.nietrokers.nl/e/g02059.html
Breast cancer, breast feeding and tobacco smoke
Phillip Whidden That lung cancer is a fatal result of passive smoking , is well known. Heart disease caused by environmental tobacco smoke causes about 10 times as many deaths in second-hand smokers as the lung-cancer deaths brought on by inhaling other people's tobacco smoke.
However, I shall present evidence today that tobacco-smoke pollution is much more powerful in causing breast cancer in women than in causing either lung cancer or heart disease. I shall also show why this evidence about breast cancer is very important for babies and children.
But before I do that, I want to raise a point about how difficult it is to get journalists to pay attention to what is important in scientific research instead of paying attention to unimportant scientific reports. I will do this by marking a very bad anniversary. Last year, almost exactly a year ago today, on May 20, scientists reported that they had found evidence that active smoking reduces the risk of breast cancer in women who carry the mutant genes BRCA1 or BRAC2. That was a Wednesday. The media in Europe and North America shouted this message to the world: SMOKING MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER. That same week, however, news releases telling the truth had been coordinated to be sent out in both Europe and North America for journalists to report on the Monday, two days earlier. Not a single television, radio, newpaper or magazine report told the public on that Monday that both active and passive smoking lead to a very large increased risk of breast cancer. Instead, all the reports were disgracefully about the Wednesday publication of the scientific report on BRCA1 and BRAC2 genes and the supposed reduction in risk of breast cancer due to smoking.
