Bursitis
Definition: Bursitis is inflammation of the fluid-filled sac (bursa) that lies between a tendon and skin, or between a tendon and bone. The condition may be acute or chronic
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Bursae are fluid-filled cavities near joints where tendons or muscles pass over bony projections. They assist movement and reduce friction between moving parts. Bursitis can be caused by chronic overuse, trauma, rheumatoid arthritis gout , or infection. Sometimes the cause cannot be determined. Bursitis commonly occurs in the shoulder, knee (washmaid's knee), elbow, and hip. Other areas that may be affected include the Achilles tendon and the foot. Chronic inflammation can occur with repeated injuries or attacks of bursitis.

Bursitis
A bursa is a fluid-filled sac between the ends of the bones and muscles that make up a joint. This fluid-filled sac acts as a cushion. Without this sac, the bones would be rubbing against each other and the joint would not be able to function. As a result of disease, injury, or overuse, a bursa may become swollen, inflamed, and painful. This condition is called bursitis. Common sites for bursitis are the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and big toe. All bursas are important to function. Whether there is irritation from a recent injury or built up injury from prolonged or repeated use, pain, swelling, and loss of motion occurs. To avoid getting bursitis follow these tips:
  • Use good posture and position. Avoid using your arms overhead or in awkward positions.

Posts to Ask Dr Stoll BB regarding Tendonitis and Bursitis
There have been several posts to the Ask Dr Stoll
Bulletin Board (BB) regarding Tendonitis and Bursitis.
Many of them have been archived here. The archive is roughly
chronological. I hope you find it useful.
Summary:
Tendonitis, bursitis, fibromyositis and fibromyalgia are all caused by the same mechanisms that ultimately cause arthritis. SO reviewing those archives and search parameters will get you what you need.
For bursitis, Rolfing is probably the ideal thing to do, as is tendonitis. This is because Rolfing chages the alignment of the total body. See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.
For all of these conditions, the essential oils tend to help as well (see the homepage).

What causes bursitis? The most common causes of bursitis are injury or overuse, although infection may also be a cause. What are the symptoms of bursitis?

Bursitis What is a bursa?
A bursa is a closed, fluid-filled sac that functions as a cushion and gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body. The major bursae are located adjacent to the tendons near the large joints, such as the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. When the bursa becomes inflamed, the condition is known as bursitis Bursitis is usually a temporary condition. It may restrain motion, but generally does not cause deformity. What causes bursitis?
The most common causes of bursitis are injury or overuse, although infection may also be a cause. Bursitis is also associated with other diseases, such as arthritis, thyroid disease, and diabetes. What are the symptoms of bursitis?
Bursitis can cause pain, localized tenderness and limited motion. Swelling and redness may occur if the inflamed bursa is close to the surface (superficial). Chronic bursitis may involve repeated attacks of pain, swelling, and tenderness, which may lead to the deterioration of muscles and limited range of motion. Who is at risk for bursitis?

Thomas, Retired "I have been very pleased with the knee wrap you had given me to try. I had developed a full and very stretched pocket of fluid below the knee from bursitis. I had gone to two sports medical doctors for opinions. One felt strongly that if I fell on it and ruptured it that I would have serious problems. The other suggested that when I wanted to do something about it to have surgery. Both recommended surgery and both felt that surgery may not permanently solve the problem. I tried your knee wrap for about a month. I noticed the fluid gradually going away completely, it is hardly noticeable. More importantly it no longer feels as though it is an over stretched balloon and about to rupture. And of course the discomfort in gone. I am convinced that your wrap was the butsitis problem solvere."
  • The key to Goode Wraps is the rare-earth semi-conductor used in the patented massage cones Goode Wraps are simple to use, just slip one on, and it begins to work for bursitis

... Bursitis and Tendinitis
Bursitis and Tendinitis Bursitis is inflammation (swelling, heat) or irritation of a bursa. Bursae are small sacs between bone and other moving parts, such as muscles, skin or tendons. The bursa allows smooth gliding between moving parts. Tendinitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon. Tendons are thick, fibrous cords that connect muscles to bone. They send the power caused by a muscle contraction to move a bone. Symptoms Tendons and bursae are located near joints. Inflamed soft tissues will often be felt by patients as joint pain. This will be mistaken for arthritis. Symptoms of bursitis and tendinitis are similar. They include pain and stiffness that is gets worse when moving. Pain may be felt more at night. Almost any tendon or bursa in the body can be affected. Those located around a joint are affected most often. Tendinitis and bursitis are usually temporary. However, these conditions may come back often or become ongoing. They do not cause deformity, but they can limit motion. Causes The most common cause of tendinitis and bursitis is injury or overuse during work or play. This is particularly true if the patient is unfit, has bad posture or uses the affected limb in an awkward way. Sometimes an infection in the bursa or tendon will cause the area to be inflamed. Tendinitis or bursitis may be linked to other conditions. These include rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, thyroid disease and diabetes.
