Welcome to the Burns Community web site! Burns is located on the western edge of the beautiful Flint Hills in south-central Kansas. Burns is a small town with a population of 270 people and a surrounding rural area. We love our community and hope you enjoy visiting the site!
On Saturday, May 8th, we kicked off a new promotion for Burns!
It is Roosters! Come to Burns and you will find painted 2-foot tall roosters in front of stores, homes, and in the parks. Sandy Heyman came up with the idea and the entire community has embraced it. We are purchasing them from Yoder Concrete in Burrton as unpainted concrete roosters and they are being painted to reflect the personalities of the people or stores that own them. A Rooster Parade was held at the corner park on Saturday, May 8th to show off the roosters. The roosters lined the sidewalk and everyone paraded by them, if you are wondering how a Rooster Parade works!

Minor Burns
"Burn" is a broader term than many think. Most people believe heat causes burns, but the medical definition of a burn has more to do with the depth of damage, not the cause. Burns can be thermal (from extremes of heat or cold ), chemical (such as acid), or radiant (sunburn, x-rays or artificial ultraviolet rays from a tanning booth). All the mechanisms cause skin damage and you should treat them similarly. Classifying Burns The old "first, second, and third degree" naming system is still common with the public, but doctors now use the terms partial thickness and full thickness For the classic sun burn (first degree burn) with redness, slight swelling, and mild pain, home treatment is safe and works well for up to 50% of the body surface. Blistering burns (second degree) can be self-treated in many cases, but should be seen by a physician if:
  • Face, neck, genital area, hands, or feet are involved. Any child under 12.
You should never self-treat a full thickness burn, no matter how small. The risk of infection and scarring is too high. Special Burns Any electrical, steam, or inhalation burn (such as smoke, chemical, or extremely hot air or vapors) must be evaluated by a physician right away. These types of burns can have unusual complications despite mild symptoms at first.

Burns The severity of a burn depends upon its size, depth and location. Burns are most severe when located on the face, neck, hands, feet and genitals. Also, when they are spread over large parts of the body or when they are combined with other injuries. Burns result in pain, infection and shock. They are most serious when the victims are very young or very old.
  • FIRST DEGREE burns are the least severe. They are characterized by redness or discoloration, mild swelling and pain. Overexposure to the sun is a common cause of first degree burns.
  • SECOND DEGREE burns are more serious. They are deeper than first degree burns, look red or mottled and have blisters. They may also involve loss of fluids through the damaged skin. Second degree burns are usually the most painful because nerve ending are usually intact, despite severe tissue damage.
  • THIRD DEGREE burns are the deepest. They may look white or charred, extend through all skin layers. Victims of third degree burns may have severe pain or no pain at all if the nerve endings are destroyed.

C. Montgomery Burns
The Simpsons
"Scourge of the weak, master of the atom," he once declared himself. Has television ever known a character so epicly fiendish as Monty Burns, The Simpsons ' 104-year-old nuclear power plant owner with an unbridled loathing for his fellow man? In his unrepentant sloth, gluttony, and stupidity, Homer Simpson serves as the comic anchor of the series. But what draws Simpsons junkies is the show's dark side, its assumption that cynical calculation and an evil corporate oligarchy make the world go round. Burns embodies those qualities: greed and malice are his only principles, and they go hand in hand. As he once asked, "What good is money if you can't inspire terror in your fellow man?" Bony and beak-nosed, with those trademark liver spots on his bald crown, Burns is a bottomless well of villainy. His rage brings sudden lightning and thunder to a clear sky, or draws booming strains of the Darth Vader theme. His tools of oppression are limitless: a troop of ruthless lawyers, a network of hidden cameras; trap doors, poisoned doughnuts, bloodthirsty hounds; an army of flying monkeys. All are marshaled against those who stand in the way of his accumulation of money and power. "Well, sir, you've certainly vanquished all your enemies," his faithful lickspittle, Wayland Smithers, once said after a particularly ruthless Burns offensive, " the elementary school, the local tavern, the old-age home . . . "

114. George Burns' Birthday!
In memoriam, George burns (18961996). For now we celebrate George burns 100th year of life and salute him for all the good times he gave us.
http://www.bcm.tmc.edu/hcoa/burns.html
In memoriam, George Burns (1896-1996) Photo from Houston Chronicle, page 1D, Jan. 18, 1996: "100 Facts about Centenarian George Burns" by Andy Edelstein of Newsday. On January 20, 1896, Nathan Birnbaum was born destined to become George Burns, one of this Nation's greatest comedic performers and a centenarian. Why did he reach his destiny and others did not? No one can say for sure. But he did have three good things going for him: he had a great set of genes; a great sense of humor; and a great capacity to never give up working, never give up loving, and never say never. While many of us may not be as lucky as the late Mr. Burns was in the "good genes" department, we can, nevertheless, learn from him and develop a good sense of humor and never say never. And while our lives might not be as long as his, they can be as rich and rewarding. Speaking of long lives, Mr. Burns, joined some 56,000 Americans 100+ years of age, the fastest growing age group in this country. In 1980, when Willard Scott of NBC TV started recognizing 100th birthdays, there was just a trickle of letters weekly; now he receives over 400 per week. Notwithstanding how remarkable becoming 100 years is and how many we have now, if demographers' projections are anywhere near accurate, by the middle of the next century when many of our children and grandchildren will be living, there may be as many as 2.5 million centenarians! If that astounds you, say "wow," because that is an astounding prospect to ponder: Who will take care of them? Who will train their care givers? Why are our national policies so uncertain regarding this issue facing today's 33,000,000 older Americans and tommorow's 76,000,000 aging baby boomers?

Louis Armstrong
Photo: Herman Leonard J azz , a new documentary by Ken Burns, is a celebration of a unique American art form and of the people that made it. Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie—these are the illustrious names that fill the history of jazz. Burns begins at the beginning—in New Orleans—then traces jazz’ history from Dixieland to Avant-Garde, from the East Coast to the West Coast, from predictable ensembles to totally free improvising. Jazz wants to re-introduce the viewer to this grand, uniquely American art form; it wants to remind the viewer just how special a Charles Mingus is; and it wants to remind the viewer of the contributions and sacrifices that African Americans have made to bring this music to the culture. The story of Jazz is told in ten parts, lasting a total of 19 hours. Each section covers a time period, providing biographies of important figures and covering social developments within that time. Episode 1 titled, "Gumbo," explores the origins of jazz in New Orleans. The most musical of American cities during the 19
