Bulimia Nervosa The most common element surrounding ALL Eating Disorders is the inherent presence of a low self esteem Men and women who live with Bulimia seek out binge and purge episodes they will eat a large quantity of food in a relatively short period of time and then use behaviors such as taking laxatives or self-induced vomiting because they feel overwhelmed in coping with their emotions, or in order to punish themselves for something they feel they should unrealistically blame themselves for. This can be in direct relation to how they feel about themselves, or how they feel over a particular event or series of events in their lives. Those suffering with Bulimia may seek episodes of binging and purging to avoid and let out feelings of anger, depression, stress or anxiety. "... the shackled anger I am accustomed to... reflecting on myself... and with every tear there are a thousand more that need to follow so I may climb from the darkness... " Men and women suffering Bulimia are usually aware they have an eating disorder. Fascinated by food they sometimes buy magazines and cook-books to read recipes, and enjoy discussing dieting issues.

Chemical malfunction plays role in bulimia, researchers say
February 14, 1999
Web posted at: 9:49 p.m. EST (0249 GMT) CHICAGO (AP) A new study adds to evidence that the eating disorder bulimia springs at least in part from a chemical malfunction in the brain and not merely from excessive desire to remain thin, researchers say. In the study released Sunday, women who had suffered from bulimia and recovered were more affected psychologically than other women by being deprived of tryptophan, which plays an indirect role in appetite regulation, researchers found. Tryptophan is an amino acid that occurs naturally in many foods and is used by the body to make serotonin, a mood- and appetite-regulating chemical in the brain. Compared with normal women, the recovered bulimics reported bigger dips in mood, greater worries about body image and more fear of losing control of eating after being deprived of dietary tryptophan for about 17 hours, researchers said.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) Michael Schiavo, the man at the center of a right-to-die controversy in Florida, said Monday he believes his wife's heart failed 13 years ago as a complication of bulimia. His wife, Terri, is in a persistent vegetative state, and he has fought to let her die in accordance with what he says are her wishes. In an exclusive interview with CNN's Larry King, Michael Schiavo said he awoke early on the morning of February 25, 1990, to find his wife collapsed in the hallway of their home. "What we can fathom right now is her potassium level was very low, more than likely from bulimia," he said. Bulimia is an eating disorder in which someone alternately binges on large amounts of food and then purges by throwing up.

Bulimia has been reported in male patients (38,42,44,69). Herzog et al. (38) noted an incidence in males of approximately four to five percent of a total population of bulimic patients. Gwirtsman found that ten to 13 percent of male students met DSMIII criteria for bulimia. The mean age of onset ranged fro 21 (38) to 24 (42) years. Duration of illness prior to treatment ranged from six years (42) to 7.4 years (38). This duration is significantly longer than the 4.2 years' duration of illness prior to treatment for bulimic females (38). Approximately two-thirds of bulimic males had a history of being overweight as compared to one-third of bulimic females. Socioeconomic classes were equally distributed in one series (38). Mitchell's (42) study noted that patients were employed, that they were functioning well, and that eleven of twelve were married. The clinical manifestations of male bulimia are comparable to female bulimia. Preoccupation with weight control and associations with the cultural pressures of professional life regarding personal performance (especially in sports, fashion, and musci) have been related to the onset of bulimia in some male patients (44).

Hayley used to love going to the food court in the mall with her friends, but now just the thought of it fills her with dread. Besides, she doesn't really even have time to hang with her friends anymore since she's upped her exercise schedule to include even more running and aerobics. She doesn't feel like herself lately - she's having a hard time concentrating in school and she's always so tired. She's really thin, too - so how come every time Hayley passes a mirror, she sees an overweight girl staring back at her? If you know someone in your school who is like Hayley - or if you recognize yourself in her - you're not alone. Hayley has an eating disorder, a condition that occurs when a person tries to become thin in an unhealthy way. Eating disorders are very common in America - between 5 and 10 million people have them. In fact, it's thought that one in 10 college-age girls has some type of eating disorder. But eating disorders don't strike only girls in college; many girls in high school and even junior high (or middle school) have them, too. It's estimated that 1% of American teens has an eating disorder. That means if your class has 400 students, probably about four of them have this condition. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa
The two most common types of eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa , more commonly known as anorexia and bulimia.
