Buergers Disease Glossary A
ABI: Ankle Brachial-Index measurement. A method for testing for peripheral arterial disease through the use of a Doppler probe and a blood pressure cuff on both the arms and ankles. Amputation: Surgical removal of a limb or portion of a limb. Above knee, below knee, or partial foot are all varieties. Arteriogram: An x-ray used to determine specific arterial blockages in the body. The procedure involves inserting a small c atheter into the artery that injects dye. Artery: A pipeline (blood vessel) carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When diseased, the organ supplied may become damaged due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. (see ischemia) top of page B
Blood pressure: The force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls. C
Catheter: A tiny flexible inserted in a blood vessel to inject dye, assist with the removal of a blood clot, or inject medication. Critical Leg Ischemia: A severe obstruction of the arteries which seriously decreases blood flow to the extremities (hands, feet and legs) and has progressed to the point of severe pain and even skin ulcers or sores. Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) is often present in individuals with severe peripheral arterial disease (PAD). D
Doppler: A diagnostic tool that uses low intensity ultrasound to detect blood flow velocity in arteries or veins.

Soap Lake History Chapters Chapter 7
This little lake that the town fought so hard to save is perhaps unique in all the world. Very few medicinal waters exist that contain such a variety of minerals. Soap Lake is what is known as a soft mineral lake because its most abundant mineral is what housewives know as washing soda, rather than the calcium salts which are the main mineral in hard mineral water. Another unique quality of the lake is that it is meromictic. The water is stratified into layers that do not mix with each other. The layer of water near the bottom of the lake is supersaturated with the healing minerals. From the many testimonials of those it has helped, there is no doubt that the water of Soap Lake has curative powers. It is the only known successful treatment for the rare Buergers Disease (Thromboangitis Obliterans). Men using the water have been able to arrest or slow the ravages of the disease. Skin, circulatory, digestive, and joint problems seem to be the disorders most commonly benefited by drinking and bathing in the water. As it was from the dawn of civilization on Soap Lake's shores, the use of the healing water is still a do-it-yourself project for the most part. Due to the efforts of a man suffering from Buergers Disease, a hospital was built here and named for him.

I reported aboard the USS BURTON ISLAND AGB-1 at Long Beach California,in February of 1955.I was aboard until November 29th 1956. I made two Northern Cruises during that period of time.
Lots of ice all around us.But that is what she was built for.
The Burton Island was launched April 30th 1946,designated AG-88 and commissioned December 28th 1946. Her first skipper was CDR G KETCHUM.Her first cruise was a southern cruise to ANTARCTICA,for the first ANTARCTIC Development Project in 1947. She steamed through the ice pack to the Bay Of Whales to unload supplies, and received passengers for the return voyage to San Pedro,California. Between April 1948 and December 1956 she participated in nineteen different cruises in Arctic and Alaskan waters. She was designated AGB-1 in March of 1949.In December 1966 was transferred from the US Navy to the US COAST GUARD, and designated WAGB_283.
This is how she looked after her new designation as a COAST GUARD ICE BREAKER.

Poor Circulation (incl Buergers Raynauds Disease). buergers disease is seen only in men who are heavy smokers and are aged between 20 and 40.
    http://www.medicalonline.com.au/medical/disease_index/general/poorcirc.htm
Poor circulation occurs when the flow of blood through a part of the body is impaired. It can occur because of a gradual narrowing of an artery which may be associated with diabetes mellitus, raised blood pressure, raised blood levels of cholesterol and smoking. Blood clots can dramatically block off the circulation of blood in an artery. Sudden narrowing or spasm of blood vessels which interferes with circulation can be caused by certain drugs, exposure to cold and smoking. The commonest of poor circulation is atherosclerosis . This narrowing of the arteries is aggravated by smoking, the level of blood cholesterol and by high blood pressure. In the past the usual approach to poor circulation in the legs was to get people to stop smoking and then to operate on their arteries. It is possible to put plastic tube with a balloon attached into the narrowed artery, stretch it and then remove the tube and the balloon - this is called an angioplasty There is also increasing evidence that atherosclerosis is reversible. If in addition to stopping smoking, blood pressure is controlled and blood cholesterol lowered to 5.5 MMOL/L

    Hypertension
Circulatory disorders are quite common in middle-aged and elderly folk. Hypertension is one of them. It is caused by cholesterol plaque deposits along the walls of the arteries, making them harden and constrict. Because the arteries are constricted, the blood exerts great force against the walls of the blood vessels, causing the blood pressure to rise.

We now have over 1,000 members and send over 500 newsletters. Initially we sent with the newsletter a list of people willing to be contacted so that new members and anybody wanting a chat could look in the list and find somebody geographically near them. However, the list got so long we couldn’t afford the postage or printing. So it was suggested that we divide the country into areas (see map). A kind volunteer from each region has agreed to be the contact person (CP). If you are willing to be contacted could you phone the CP responsible for your area and let them know. The CP will keep details of your name, phone number, the town where you live and the illness, which concerns you most. Then as people wish to talk they will phone the CP who will put them in contact with somebody nearby.

Other characters Ischaemia, small bowel, has a multifactorial aetiology depending on intestinal vasculature, luminal bacterial population and duration of the ischaemia. Arterial spasm and decreased perfusion pressure accentuate the extent of the ischaemic damage. The combination of necrosis and bacterial invasion develops when the mucosal barrier becomes defective. The basic pathological response is mucosal coagulation necrosis. If the blood flow is re-established an acute inflammatory response develops. Acute infarction of the small bowel is most commonly due to superior mesenteric artery occlusion, mesenteric vein thrombosis or arteritis. Small bowel ischaemic necrosis occurs predominantly in elderly individuals with cardiovascular disease. Chronic ischaemia of the small bowel is usually due to mesenteric artery atherosclerosis. The superior mesenteric artery is affected more commonly than the inferior mesenteric artery. Intestinal infarction secondary to atheromatous occlusion of a single vessel is rare. Plain radiographs may disclose a picture of paralytic obstruction or eventually a localized air-fluid filled segment with oedematous folds. On barium examination there is thickening of the bowel wall with characteristic thick irregular folds. Computerized tomography often demonstrates localized thickening and enhancement of the bowel wall after intravenous administration of contrast medium. In cases with bowel infarction air may be seen in the bowel wall (
