The World of Infectious Diseases
The Bubonic Plague Plague has been an important disease for a very long time - it was known in China over three thousand years ago, and wiped out over a third of the European population in the 14th century. More recently in 1665, the Black Death killed half the population of London, being spread by fleas on black rats. This disease of humans and rodents is caused by a rod-shaped bacterium called Yersinia pestis, discovered by the Swiss scientist Yersin in 1894.
The plague bacterium can be transmitted between people in three different ways, and the symptoms that appear depend on the route by which it is acquired.
In bubonic plague the bacteria are spread by infection from rat fleas. The lymph glands in the armpits and groin become painful and swollen - so-called buboes.
Pneumonic plague results when one person spreads the bactrerium to another through droplets of moisture leaving their lungs. It results in rapid pneumonia and bleeding in the lungs and can kill in two or three days without treatment.
Septicemic plague is the third type; it happens when the bacterium is directly transmitted into the bloodstream of the victim, or spreads from an earlier infection. Without treatment it is almost always fatal - in the few hours before death the victim becomes dark purple.

If you are looking for plagues in general, see disease A disease is any abnormal condition of the body or mind that causes discomfort, dysfunction, or distress to the person affected or those in contact with the person. Sometimes the term is used broadly to include injuries, disabilities, syndromes, symptoms, deviant behaviors, and atypical variations of structure and function, while in other contexts these may be considered distinguishable categories.

Agents and vectors
Infectious disease requires an agent and a mode of transmission (or vector ). A good example is malaria, which is mainly caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum but does not affect humans unless the vector, the Anopheles mosquito, is around to introduce the Plasmodium into the human bloodstream.

What is plague?
Plague is a bacterial disease caused by Yersinia pestis . Wild rodents, especially ground squirrels and prairie dogs, are the natural reservoir for plague. Rats, wild rodents, cats, and dogs can become infected with plague and the disease is occasionally transmitted to people by fleas. Who gets plague?
Plague is extremely rare in the United States, where the small number of reported cases in recent years have been limited to the Western states. Plague occurs in areas where infection of wild rodents is common, including South America, parts of Africa, and South Asia. Are there different kinds of plague?
Yes. Bubonic plague gets its name from the enlarged and tender lymph glands, or nodes (called "buboes" during the 14th century, when the disease ravaged Europe). Pneumonic plague gets its name from its pneumonia-like symptoms. How is plague spread?
Bubonic plague is transmitted primarily by the bite from infected fleas; however, transmission can occur by bites or scratches from infected wild rodents and cats, or contact with tissue from infected animals. Pneumonic plague is far more contagious because it is spread through the air by sneezing or coughing.

History of Epidemics and Plagues (October 2001) Introduction Definitions Types of Epidemics Coevolution ... Objectives Terms you need to know are written in bold blue . Added comments are in green Introduction Every infection is a race between the microbes and the host. The microbe, following the indelible rules of evolution, strives to survive and reproduce, while the host's immune system mounts a warlike defense designed to find, destroy, and eliminate it. An agent that kills its host quickly cannot be expected to survive long enough to reproduce. Thus excessive virulence is not selected for in evolution. Germs, which can reproduce and be passed from one host to another, are favored. Definitions The prevalence of a disease is the number of diseased individuals at any one time (point prevalence) or over a given period (period prevalence). The incidence is the number of new cases of a disease that occur within a defined population over an established period of time. Frequently either prevalence or incidence, or both, are given as a rate , meaning the number of cases in a fixed number of people, e.g., cases per 100,000. Individual cases of disease in widely separated geographic areas or otherwise independent cases are said to be

Health Officials Issue Plague Warning
38 Cases Reported Since 1970
POSTED: 7:02 p.m. PDT July 3, 2002
LOS ANGELES State health officials issued a warning Wednesday to people planning to be outdoors this holiday weekend to guard against bubonic plague, which is carried by rodents in foothills, mountains and along coastal areas. Since 1970, 38 cases of the plague in humans have been reported statewide. The most recent report was in 2000 when a Kern County man survived the sometimes deadly disease by taking antibiotics, said Ken August of the California Department of Health Services. Symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, weakness and swollen glands. State officials offered these plague-avoidance tips for travelers:
  • Don't take pets, especially cats, on camping trips because they attract fleas that carry the plague. Avoid contact with rodents, especially dead or sick animals.

of ice core layers REVIEW of an ARTICLE BY RICHARD STOTHERS from the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies Research, 3-30-00 "Plague! The word conjures up kaleidoscopic images of medieval pestilence and modern media hype. As a specific disease, however, its meaning is now confined to the infectious, and often fatal, illness caused by the bacterium Pasteurella pestis. Common carriers of true plague are rat and human fleas and the human louse. Louis Pasteur in the 19th century suggested that the cyclical agent of plague, whatever it was, might lie very low until suddenly reactivated by a change in the climate. As early as the 16th century, the poet Thomas Nashe in the midst of a British plague lamented, "From winter, plague and pestilence, good Lord, deliver us!" In fact, it is now recognized that wet, chilly weather stimulates the reproduction of the deadly bacterium that causes bubonic and pneumonic plague. Yet, the origin of the historical cycles of plague has remained obscure. By statistically examining the occurrences of widespread plague that have been recorded throughout Western history, a curious coincidence emerges. A large number of these pandemics occurred shortly after a volcano underwent a huge eruption, according to GISS scientist Richard Stothers.

Bubonic plague is an infectious disease that is believed to have caused several epidemics or pandemics throughout history. Table of contents 1 Infection
2 Symptoms and treatment

3 Historic outbreaks

4 Contemporary cases
Infection
The disease is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and is usually transmitted by the bite of fleas from an infected host, often a rat . The bacteria are transferred from the blood of infected rats to the Rat Flea ( Xenopsylla cheopsis ). The bacillus multiplies in the stomach of the flea, blocking it. When the flea next bites a mammal , the consumed blood is regurgitated along with the bacillus into the bloodstream of the bitten animal. Any serious outbreak of plague is started by other disease outbreaks in the rodent population. During these outbreaks, infected fleas that have lost their normal hosts seek other sources of blood.
Symptoms and treatment
The disease becomes evident 2-6 days after infection. Initial symptoms are chills, fever, headaches, and the formation of buboes. The buboes are formed by the infection of the lymph nodes , which swell and become prominent. If unchecked, the bacteria infect the bloodstream (septicemic plague) and then the lungs (pneumonic plague).
