Meige's syndrome II Also known as:
Brueghel’s syndrome
Synonyms: Blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia syndrome, median facial spasm, oral facial dystonia. Associated persons: Pieter Brueghel Henri Meige Description: The term Meige's syndrome II/Brueghel's syndrome is used for blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia occurring together. It is a disabling spasm of the facial musculature consisting of primary blepharospasm followed by abnormal facial movement. Squinting may begin unilaterally but soon becomes bilateral. In time, the lower facial muscles becomes involved with yawning, jaw opening, and abnormal tongue movements. The voice is often affected as well. The involuntary movements cease during sleep. The condition may be aggravated by eating or talking and is sometimes lessened by humming, singing, yawning or voluntary opening of the mouth. Henry Meige in 1910 described a condition characterized by blepharospasm and facial, mandibular, oral, lingual, and laryngeal spasms and called it "spasm facial median." There is a distinct overlap between benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) and Meige although either can exist without the other.

General Discussion
Meige Syndrome is a rare neurological movement disorder (dyskinesia) characterized by spasms of the muscles of the eyelids and associated loss of tone in these eyelid muscles. Symptoms may include excessive blinking (blepharospasm) or involuntary eyelid closure. On occasion, the muscles of the face may also be involved. The exact cause of Meige Syndrome is not known. This disorder generally affects people during late middle age.
Symptoms
The symptoms of Meige Syndrome typically begin during late middle age and may include gradual functional impairment of the muscles of the eyelids (dyskinesia orbiculares oculi). Muscle spasms may cause excessive involuntary blinking (blepharospasm) or episodes of involuntary eyelid closure. In some people with Meige Syndrome, the muscles of the face are also affected, resulting in facial grimacing and uncontrollable squeezing movements of the facial muscles (facial dystonia). Other symptoms may include jaw grinding movements, repeated forceful opening of the jaw, and retraction of the lips into the mouth. Eyelid and facial muscle tone may gradually decline.

Web page created on December 13, 1997 Henri Meige described in 1904 what is now commonly called oral facial dystonia. There is some variation in what has been described since in what has been called Meige's syndrome, but in all descriptions there is blinking and chin thrusting. Some patients have lip pursing or tongue movements and, for a few, the movements spread into the shoulders.

Brueghel syndrome: its distinction from Meige syndrome
    GJ Gilbert
Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of South Florida, Tampa, USA. A critical historical evaluation of the cranial dystonias supports the separation of the dystonia of the motor trigeminal nerve producing a widely opened mouth (Brueghel syndrome) from the more common facial dystonias with blepharospasm (Meige syndrome). In a patient with Brueghel syndrome, paroxysmal hyperpnea coincided with dystonic gaping; the finding of upbeating nystagmus suggests pontine localization in the pathogenesis of this rare disorder.
