Chronic bronchitis and emphysema
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
December, 2002 Download this factsheet Chronic bronchitis and emphysema stop the lungs from working properly, typically causing breathlessness and wheezing. The two conditions lead to similar symptoms and are often referred to as "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease", or COPD for short.
What causes COPD?
The biggest single cause of COPD is smoking, and the risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked. Due to industrial smoke and pollutants, it is also more common in people living in cities than in the country, and in people who work in dusty environments. Generally, it is more likely to affect older people and the vast majority of sufferers are aged 70 to 85. Each year, around 28,000 people die from COPD.

Generally a mild condition that eventually heals totally, however, bronchitis can also be chronic. In this condition there is diffused inflammation of the air passages in the lungs, leading to decreased uptake of oxygen by the lungs and increased mucus production. Two main types of bronchitis exist :
  • Infectious Bronchitis Caused by viruses and bacteria (e.g. Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia ). Most frequent in Winter. Smokers and those with chronic sinusitis , bronchochietasis, allergies and children with enlarged tonsils and adenoids may experience recurrent infections.

The bronchitis may be be present alone or may be accompanied by chronic airways obstruction or limitation, with or without a reversible component. There are four categories of chronic bronchitis: chronic simple bronchitis, chronic mucopurulent bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis and chronic bronchitis with pulmonary obstruction. Medical Reference Care Guides Acute Bronchitis Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the part of the respiratory system that leads into the lungs. There are two types of bronchitis acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis usually appears after a respiratory infection, such as a cold, and can be caused by either a virus or bacteria. Chronic bronchitis does not have a sudden onset and is most frequently caused by long term irritation of the bronchial tubes. A case if bronchitis is considered "chronic" if symptoms continue for three months or longer. Bronchitis caused by allergies can also be classified as chronic bronchitis. What are the symptoms of acute bronchitis?
  • Fever Painful cough Sore throat Production of thick, yellow mucus Shortness of breath or wheezing
What causes acute bronchitis? Bronchitis results from an infection such as a cold or flu. The infection inflames the bronchial tubes, which causes the symptoms of bronchitis. Although acute bronchitis is relatively common, some people are more prone to it than others. People at a higher risk include smokers, individuals with respiratory illnesses such as asthma, and individuals exposed to high levels of airborne pollutants. Is acute bronchitis dangerous?

What causes acute bronchitis?
Acute bronchitis is almost always caused by viruses that attack the lining of the bronchial tree and cause infection. As your body fights back against these viruses, more swelling occurs and more mucus is made. It takes time for your body to kill the viruses and heal the damage to your bronchial tubes. In most cases, the same viruses that cause colds cause acute bronchitis. Research has shown that bacterial infection is much less common in bronchitis than we used to think. Very rarely, an infection caused by a fungus can cause acute bronchitis. Return to top

If you smoke or are around damaging fumes (such as those in certain kinds of factories), you are more likely to get acute bronchitis and to have it longer. This is because your bronchial tree is already damaged. Return to top

Symptoms of a runny nose and cough gradually worsen over three to four days and your child will then develop a frequent, nonproductive, dry, hacking cough. The cough will continue to worsen and may become productive and he may have a low grade fever and decreased energy level. Symptoms gradually improve over the next five to ten days and do not respond to antibiotics. Treatment is aimed at making your child more comfortable and include plenty of fluids, cough suppressants if helpful, and a decongestant. ABNORMAL LUNG ANATOMY
What Happens With COPD Chronic Bronchitis
If you have chronic bronchitis:
  • the cells lining the inside of the bronchi are continuously inflamed
  • the airways in your lungs have become narrow and partly clogged with mucus
The bronchi are air passages connecting the windpipe (trachea) with the sacs of the lung (alveoli), where oxygen is taken up by the blood. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi. This inflammation causes excessive production of mucus and swelling of the bronchial walls. Airflow into and out of the lungs is obstructed. With chronic bronchitis, the mucus cannot be cleared. Instead of helping to clean the lungs, it causes obstruction in the airways. The mucus is thicker and more difficult to cough up. This provides a means for bacteria to settle in the lower airways and increases the risk of infection. Chronic bronchitis is caused mainly by cigarette smoke. It is characterized by:
  • persistent cough
  • production of mucus
The degree of breathlessness experienced depends on the degree of congestion of the airways and inflammation of the bronchial mucus membranes. Defence Mechanisms of the Lungs Emphysema

bronchitis
Bronchitis refers to inflammation of the large breathing tubes of the lungs (as contrasted with pneumonia, which means infection or foreign material in the air sacs). These tubes are lined with glands that secrete mucus to trap any foreign material (dust and germs mainly) that get down in the lungs. When the lining of the bronchi is irritated and inflamed, the response is swelling of the lining (which makes the tubes smaller inside and harder to breathe through), and the secretion of increased amounts of mucus. The mucus may get thicker and stickier as well. Ordinarily, mucus in the lungs is pretty watery. This allows the cleaning system (cilia - billions of microscopic "fingers" on the lining cells of the tubes that all wave in the same direction - up and out of the lungs) to pump it out of the lungs, up the windpipe (trachea) and out through the larynx (voicebox) to be swallowed and sterilized by the acid in the stomach. As mentioned above, when a patient has bronchitis, the

What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic bronchitis is an inflammation, or irritation, of the airways in the lungs. Airways are tubes in your lungs that air passes through. They are also called bronchial tubes. When the airways are irritated, thick mucus forms in the tubes. The mucus plugs up the tubes and makes it hard for you to get air into your lungs. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis include a cough that produces mucus (sometimes called sputum), trouble breathing and a feeling of tightness in your chest. Return to top
What causes chronic bronchitis?
Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic bronchitis. When tobacco smoke is breathed into the lungs, it irritates the airways which then produce mucus. People who have been exposed for a long time to things that irritate their lungs, like chemical fumes, dust and other substances, can also get chronic bronchitis. Return to top

It is always better to err on the side of caution.
Obstructive and allergic lung diseases affect many cats and are sometimes called "asthma," "bronchitis," or "bronchial asthma." Unfortunately, these diseases are not easily classified and probably represent a variety of lung disorders. They do share a common finding of "hyper-responsive" (over-reactive) airways.
When the airway of the cat is sensitive to certain stimuli, exposure to these agents leads to narrowing of the airways . The inciting agents are usually direct irritants to the airways or things which provoke an allergic response in the respiratory tract. Regardless of the cause, the end-result is the same: muscle spasms in the bronchi (breathing tubes), buildup of mucus, and accumulation of cellular material. In particular, the inability to clear the bronchi of this material leaves the cat susceptible to secondary infections.
