What causes acute bronchitis?
Acute bronchitis is almost always caused by viruses that attack the lining of the bronchial tree and cause infection. As your body fights back against these viruses, more swelling occurs and more mucus is made. It takes time for your body to kill the viruses and heal the damage to your bronchial tubes. In most cases, the same viruses that cause colds cause acute bronchitis. Research has shown that bacterial infection is much less common in bronchitis than we used to think. Very rarely, an infection caused by a fungus can cause acute bronchitis. Return to top
How do people get acute bronchitis?
If you smoke or are around damaging fumes (such as those in certain kinds of factories), you are more likely to get acute bronchitis and to have it longer. This is because your bronchial tree is already damaged. Return to top

24. Chronic Bronchitis
What is Chronic bronchitis? bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi causing excessive mucous production and swelling of the bronchial walls.
http://www.lung.ca/diseases/chronic_bronchitis.html
What is Chronic Bronchitis? The bronchi are air passages connecting the windpipe (trachea) with the sacs of the lung (alveoli) where oxygen is taken up by the blood. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi causing excessive mucous production and swelling of the bronchial walls. Many people suffer a brief attack of acute bronchitis with fever, coughing and spitting when they have a severe cold. Chronic bronchitis, however, is the term applied when this coughing and spitting continue for months and return each year, generally lasting slightly longer each time. Undue breathlessness on exertion is eventually noticed, due to obstruction to air flow in the air passages caused by swelling of the bronchial wall and the presence of mucus that cannot be cleared. For more information on living with Chronic Bronchitis consult the Breathe Easy Guide and other chronic lung disease resources. Emphysema is a disease in which there is destruction of the walls of the air sacs of the lung, and it is frequently preceded by chronic bronchitis. Emphysema adds to the breathlessness suffered by the patient with chronic bronchitis. What Causes Chronic Bronchitis?

Inside the Human Body The Respiratory System. Lung Health Wellness. CHRONIC bronchitis. Sometimes a very bad cold can develop into acute bronchitis.
http://www.lung.ca/children/grades7_12/lung_health/chronic_bronchitis.html
CHRONIC BRONCHITIS Chronic bronchitis occurs when the air passages which connect the windpipe with the air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs get red and swollen an produce too much mucus. Sometimes a very bad cold can develop into acute bronchitis. It makes it difficult for us to breathe and causes fever, coughing and spitting but is a short term problem. This can happen in both young and elderly persons. Chronic bronchitis is the name for this coughing and spitting when it continues for months or for years. It takes a long time to get chronic bronchitis but gradually you become more and more short of breath until eventually you get out of breath doing ordinary things such as dressing or taking a bath. TREATMENT Bronchitis is treated with antibiotics to stop bacteria which like to attack weaker parts of the body. Drugs used to reduce the swelling in the air passages may also be beneficial. Medications can help but they cannot cure chronic bronchitis. Regular exercise is important for people suffering from chronic bronchitis. Being fit will make up for some of the damage done to the lungs. The best treatment for this lung disease is prevention. At least 8 out of every 10 cases of chronic bronchitis are caused by smoking. DON'T SMOKE!

Overview Just when you thought you were finally over a cold, your chest starts to feel sore and you develop an irritating cough. Later, you might get the chills or a slight fever. If these symptoms sound familiar, you might have acute bronchitis, a condition that occurs when the inner walls that line the main air passageways of your lungs (bronchial tubes) become inflamed. Bronchitis often follows a respiratory infection such as a cold. And just as most people get occasional colds, virtually everyone has bronchitis at least once.
  • Cold Asthma Emphysema
  • Signs and symptoms Still, these signs can be deceptive. You don't always produce sputum when you have bronchitis, and children often swallow coughed-up material, so parents may not know it's infected.

    http://oac.med.jhmi.edu/res_phys/Encyclopedia/Bronchitis/Bronchitis.HTML
    Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a condition which is clinically defined as a chronic cough with mucus production most months of the year. The mucus secretions and inflammation in the bronchi tend to narrow the airways and provide an obstacle to airflow, thus increasing the resistance of the airways. In this manner bronchitis may cause obstructive pulmonary symptoms. On pulmonary tests, a bronchitic may present a decreased FEV1 and FEV1/FVC. However, unlike the other common obstructive disorders, asthma and emphysema, bronchitis rarely causes a high residual volume. This is because the air flow obstruction found in bronchitis is due to increased resistance, which does not generally cause the airways to collapse prematurely and trap air in the lungs. Chemicals in red wine could be the next treatment for chronic lung disease. Faquier County, Virginia Trawling the wine cellar for potential cures for human ailments in the same way we search tropical rainforests and oceans for useful drugs has yielded a new treatment for chronic lung disease.
Researchers from Imperial College, London have reported in the British Medical Journal that resveratrol, a component of red wine, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help treat a common type of lung disease.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an irreversible condition where the lungs progressively deteriorate, making it difficult to breathe. The term is used to describe the airflow obstruction that is associated mainly with emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
The major risk factor for COPD is smoking and the only way to slow the disease is to stop smoking, use asthma medication and get some good old fashioned exercise.
Now researchers have found that resveratrol, a polyphenol antioxidant found in the skins of red fruits such as grapes, may suppress the disease.

Chronic Bronchitis What is chronic bronchitis?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) COPD is a term that refers to a large group of lung diseases which can interfere with normal breathing. It is estimated that 11 percent of the US population has COPD. The two most common conditions of COPD are chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The causes of COPD are not fully understood. It is generally agreed that the most important cause of chronic bronchitis and emphysema is cigarette smoking. Causes such as air pollution and occupational exposures may play a role, especially when combined with cigarette smoking. Heredity also plays a contributing role in some patients' emphysema, and is especially important in a rare form due to alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency. Symptoms
Patients with chronic bronchitis usually have cough and sputum for many years before they develop shortness of breath.
