After breast cancer: Keeping the devil at bay
October 8, 1999 Web posted at: 2:52 PM EDT (1852 GMT) In this story: The drugs The doctors The lifestyle RELATEDS By Kiki Alderon (WebMD) Joan Kerr, a Texan diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago, enjoys living healthy each day. "Because of breast cancer, I'm a happier person," she says. Not everyone has such a sunny perspective on breast cancer. Though most women with the disease survive for years after their diagnosis, the demon often returns. So these women must make prevention a part of their daily lives through drugs, doctor visits and a healthy lifestyle. The drugs For nearly 20 years, tamoxifen (Nolvadex) has been used to treat patients with advanced breast cancer. Now doctors are prescribing it for people whose breast cancer has been successfully treated as well. One study, published in the May 16, 1998, issue of the journal The Lancet, found that taking tamoxifen for five years reduces recurrence in such women by 42 percent and mortality by 22 percent.

163. Bras And Breast Cancer - Women Who Wear Bras Versus Those That Do Not, Bras And
A documented increase in breast cancer rates has been noted between women who do wear bras versus those that do not. Bras and breast cancer.

Bras and Breast Cancer
by Ralph L. Reed, Ph.D.
Although I am an environmental chemist (Ph.D in biochemistry), I have been doing a lot of literature research on breast cancer since I saw an article on the National Library of Medicine database over a year ago. That article documented an increase in breast cancer rates between women who do wear bras versus those that do not. That Harvard study fascinated me and I searched the medical literature for possible explanations. In January 1996, I discovered the book by Singer and Grismaijer and their explanation of impaired lymphatic flow intrigued me. I have since read everything that I can find on lymphatic flow. What I have found has amazed me, but that is another story. I can supply you with lots of info if you like. In essence, what Singer and Grismaijer found was that the odds of getting breast cancer dramatically increased with bra-wearing over 12 hours per day.
  • Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for the standard group).
  • Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.

Got Breast Cancer?
Just a few examples:
The American Cancer Society points out that "about one-third of the 500,000 cancer deaths that occur in the United States each year is due to dietary factors … Although the committee recognizes that no diet can guarantee full protection against any disease, we believe that our recommendations offer the best nutrition information currently available to help Americans reduce their risk of cancer." The Society’s top two recommendations are: "1. Choose most of the foods you eat from plant sources"; and "2. Limit your intake of high-fat foods, particularly from animal sources." The American Dietetic Association reports that breast cancer is most prevalent in countries where women consume high-fat, animal-based diets. In Asia, where milk consumption is extremely rare, breast cancer is almost unheard of. International renowned nutrition expert Dr. T. Colin Campbell points to China, a basically nonmilk-drinking country, where cancer deaths among women aged 35 to 64 averaged less than 9 per 100,000, as opposed to 44 per 100,000 in the U.S. Japanese women who follow a more Western-style, meat- and dairy-based diet are eight times more likely to develop breast cancer than their counterparts who eat a plant-based diet not containing dairy products.

What is breast screening?
Breast screening is a method of detecting breast cancer at a very early stage. The first step involves an x-ray of each breast - a mammogram - which is taken while carefully compressing the breast. Most women find it a bit uncomfortable and a few find it painful. The mammogram can detect small changes in breast tissue which may indicate cancers which are too small to be felt either by the woman herself or by a doctor.

Clinical Practice Guidelines Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among Canadian women. Despite slight declines in mortality rates over the past decade for women with breast cancer, one in nine Canadian women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime; one in 25 Canadian women will die from this disease.
Risk Factors
Scientific researchers are not certain of the direct causes of breast cancer, but have identified some proven risk factors as well as others that are suspected or possible.
Known Risk Factors
  • Gender: More than 99% of breast cancers occur in women Age: risk increases as you get older Early menstruation (before the age of 12) Late menopause (after age 55) Having a first baby after age 30 or never having a baby Having a close relative with breast cancer Being physically inactive Being overweight Taking hormone replacement therapy
Possible Risk Factors
  • Eating too few fruits and vegetables Drinking too much alcohol Never breastfeeding Smoking tobacco or being exposed to second-hand smoke Using birth control pills

Abortion, Breast Cancer, and Ideology
Joel Brind
In innumerable newspaper and television stories shortly after New Year’s, the reassuring news was passed to the American people: Science—in the form of the New England Journal of Medicine—had spoken on the question of abortion and breast cancer. A supposedly definitive study from Denmark, prepared by Dr. Mads Melbye and his colleagues in Copenhagen, had concluded, "Induced abortions have no overall effect on the risk of breast cancer." There was perhaps something disingenuous in the reassurance, for the prior evidence of abortion’s contribution to breast cancer was news that had been assiduously suppressed by much of the mainstream medical and popular press. But now, with the publication of the Danish study, all doubts were put to rest. The debate about abortion is now rightly restricted to "abortion itself—a debate that is ethical and political in its essence," declared Dr. Patricia Hartge of the National Cancer Institute in an editorial that accompanied the publication of the study in the January New England Journal of Medicine. Women need no longer "worry about the risk of breast cancer when facing the difficult decision of whether to terminate a pregnancy."

An interactive tool
to measure a woman’s risk
of invasive breast cancer
Scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) Biostatistics Canter have developed this Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool, a Web tool that allows a health professional to project a woman’s individualized estimate of risk for invasive breast cancer over a 5-year period and over her lifetime (to age 90). This tool uses statistical methods applied to data from the Breast Cancer Detection and Demonstration Project, a mammography screening project conducted in the 1970s. This Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool has been designed for a health professional to project an individual patient's estimate of invasive breast cancer risk. It is only part of the complex discussion regarding a woman's options in reducing her risk of breast cancer. Therefore, if you are not a health professional, you should discuss with your doctor the interpretation of the results of this risk profile. Another useful source of information that may help in the discussion with your health care professional is the Cancer Information Service (CIS), which may be reached at 1-800-4-CANCER.

http://members.aol.com/BCLEGIS/
One of nine women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In 1998 a breast cancer will be diagnosed every three minutes, and a woman will die from breast cancer every twelve minutes. In over seventy percent of these cases, the women have no known risk factors.
This page is an attempt to keep people informed of pending legislation in the US Congress. I am a breast cancer survivor and do not represent any organization. As you read through the descriptions of the legislation you may notice duplication. For example, there are several bills addressing Medicare coverage of mammograms. Each of the bills has different approaches and ways of insuring adequate coverage. I don't endorse any specific bills. My aim is to get people involved in the legislative process and communicating with their elected representatives. I have provided links to Thomas (the Library of Congress site) to ensure the information is current. I'd also like to be able to link to information at the state level. So far I only know about a site for the state of California . If you know of any other sites, please let me know.
