Introduction to Breast Cancer Causes of Breast Cancer Diagnosis How To Do a Breast Self-Exam ... The Outlook for the Future The discovery of a lump in the breast is one of the most frightening and feared health problems a woman can face. Perhaps that's because breast cancer is the most common cancer to afflict women, accounting for one out of every three cancer diagnoses in America. It can also be a disfiguring disease, and a life-threatening one, too.
General Introduction
top Doctors now know that over the course of a lifetime - meaning by the age of 85 - women have a 1 in 8 chance of developing a breast tumor. For reasons that are still unknown, white women have a higher risk for developing breast cancer than African-American, Hispanic-American, and Asian-American women. Regardless of a woman's race or ethnic group, the risk increases as she gets older. Risk of developing breast cancer for a white woman At age 30 1 in 5,900 At age 35 1 in 2,300 At age 40 1 in 1,200 At age 50 1 in 590 At age 60 1 in 420 At age 70 1 in 330 At age 80 1 in 290 Source: Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, 2nd Edition, Page 179.

INVOLUNTARY SMOKING CAUSES BREAST CANCER TOO
Being around people who are smoking, even as little as one hour a day, can almost triple a woman's risk of contracting breast cancer, the second leading cause of deaths among all American women, and the leading cause of death among middle-aged women. This is the finding of a new study Dr. Alfredo Morabia recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Morabia headed a team of researchers from the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, that analyzed the smoking habits and exposure of nearly 1300 women. Among their findings:
  • Just smoking fewer than 10 cigarettes a day was enough to double a woman's risk of breast cancer.
  • Smoking 10 to 19 cigarettes a day saw the risk jump almost five fold.
  • Women who were exposed to cigarette smoke for one hour per day for 12 consecutive months nearly tripled their risk of contracting this deadly disease. More women die of breast cancer than from any other cancer. It is now the second leading cause of death in American women. Last year doctors diagnosed cancer of the breast in 182,000 women, and 46,000 died from it. It kills more middle-age women than any other disease. Every fifteen minutes at least three women will develop breast cancer and one will die.

First lady announces $27 million for cancer research
January 14, 2000 Web posted at: 11:06 a.m. EST (1606 GMT) GARDEN CITY, New York (CNN) Speaking to a group of breast cancer survivors and activists, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton announced a $27 million initiative to research the environmental causes of cancer. "We have reason to believe, based on the statistics, that there is some environmental connection or cause between the advent of the disease in an individual's life and the living conditions here on Long Island," Clinton said Thursday. Clinton said the proposal would be a $10 million increase over the previous year's budget allocations. The initiative would be part of President Bill Clinton's 2001 budget, and funding would go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Health Lab.

Breast cancer drug may work for prostate patients as well
    March 1, 1999

Web posted at: 10:42 p.m. EST (0342 GMT)
NEW YORK (CNN) A new drug recently approved to fight breast cancer in women may be just as effective in treating advanced prostate cancer in men, scientists said Monday. Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles have found that some cases of prostate cancer involved the HER-2 gene, usually associated with breast cancer. The bioengineered drug Herceptin has been successful in blocking excessive HER-2 growth in late-stage breast cancer patients. The presence of HER-2 in prostate cancer patients raises the possibility that the drug may be helpful to men as well. Nearly 200,000 American men develop prostate cancer every year and about 40,000 die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. It is the second-deadliest form of cancer among men, behind lung cancer. Doctors have known since 1941 that prostate cancer is stimulated by androgens, or male sex hormones. The standard treatment has been to surgically or chemically castrate patients to eliminate the tumor's source of hormones.

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) The amount of weight a woman gains after age 18 is a strong signal as to whether she will get breast cancer later in life, according to new research released Wednesday by the American Cancer Society. In one of the largest studies of weight and breast cancer to date, researchers said older women who gained 20 to 30 pounds after high school graduation were 40 percent more likely to get breast cancer than women who kept the weight off. The risk doubled if a woman gained more than 70 pounds, said Heather Spencer Feigelson, senior epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society. "Breast cancer is strongly dependent on body weight," Feigelson said. "Even modest amounts of weight gain lead to a significantly increased risk of breast cancer."

    What is Inflammatory Breast Cancer?
Information about IBC is also available in Magyarul and Deutsch Inflammatory Breast Cancer ( IBC) is a relatively rare form of breast cancer (about 1-4%), and symptoms usually include the following:
    • A warm swollen breast that does not change through the menstrual cycle or respond to antibiotics
    • Skin which is red or appears dimpled like an orange (peau d'orange)
Other possible signs of IBC include:
    • The sudden appearance of a large lump in the breast
    • Itching or pain in the breast
    • A nipple which is flattened or inverted, possibly with a discharge
    • Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or above the collarbone
(The IBC Research Foundation has a longer list of symptoms These symptoms often appear with IBC because the cancer is fast-growing and blocks the lymph vessels in the breast and skin. All of the listed symptoms may also be present with benign breast disorders. Different women have different symptoms, and although IBC is normally associated with infiltration of the skin lymphatic system, in some cases there may be no visible skin changes.

    Home Health Breast Cancer Pledges
Sign the pledge and make a difference! Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) introduced bipartisan legislation that mirrors the House bill sponsored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) which would end this horrific practice. The petitions were collected by Lifetimetv.com as part of Lifetime's campaign against this practice with DeLauro, Landrieu, the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO), physicians, advocates and survivors across the nation. Lifetime Television, NABCO, Rep. DeLauro and Connecticut physician Kristen Zarfos, M.D., have been fighting for this type of access to quality care for all women since 1996. The legislation would require insurance companies to cover a 48-hour minimum stay for mastectomy patients and a 24-hour stay for a woman undergoing a lymph node dissection. The legislation ensures that a doctor and a patient will make a decision together about staying at a hospital after a mastectomy. While both the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association believe that most patients require a longer hospital stay, "drive-through" mastectomies have become an unwelcome reality for women who are battling breast cancer. Against the advice of their doctors, thousands of women must leave the hospital while still in pain, groggy with anesthesia and with drainage tubes still in place. The House version of the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act is co-sponsored by 153 members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. The legislation is supported by the American Medical Association; NABCO; American College of Surgeons; American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons; Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses; National Council of Jewish Women; Society for the Advancement of Women's Health Research; Susan G. Komen Foundation; Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization; and Families USA.

Breast cancer cases rise, cancer deaths decline
Doctors say early screening for cancers has helped to reduce death rates From Rea Blakey CNN (CNN) Cancer deaths particularly those for breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers declined during the 1990s, the National Cancer Institute reports. Doctors said early detection might be saving more lives. From 1995 to 1998, deaths from breast cancer fell 3.4 percent; prostate cancer, 4.5 percent; colorectal cancer, 1.3 percent; and lung cancer, 0.8 percent. However, the number of new breast cancer cases rose 1.2 percent per year, from 1992 to 1998. Mammography and early detection have helped to raise incidence rates, said Brenda Edwards of the National Cancer Institute, the final author of the report. "We think that there may be some changes in both the clinical management, surgical management, looking for nodes and the way they're being diagnosed pathologically that may be helping us find more," Edwards said. The figures come from an annual report that is a collaborative effort by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
