And in 2000, Latina pop star, Soraya, was one of them. But even before her diagnosis, the singer was no stranger to breast cancer. Her mother, grandmother, and aunt all battled the disease. "It was something that was a constant in our family," she says. Following her mother's death from complications related to breast cancer, Soraya became actively involved in breast cancer awareness organizations in an effort to spread the word about early detection, and the singer practiced what she preached. In June 2000, while performing a self-breast exam, she made an alarming discovery.

Breast Cancer and Mammography Information
Find out where you can get a free or low-cost mammogram and Pap test. An estimated 215,990 new invasive cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States during 2004. Mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage—an average of 1–3 years before a woman can feel the lump. Mammography also locates cancers too small to be felt during a clinical breast examination. Simply being a woman and getting older puts you at some risk for breast cancer. Your risk for breast cancer continues to increase over your lifetime. Several factors can further increase your risk for breast cancer. For more information regarding these known risks contact the National Cancer Institute

Better imaging techniques have led to the detection of breast cancers at very early stages of development, allowing less radical intervention by the surgeon. Overall, the size of breast cancers and the incidence of axillary lymph node metastases are declining sharply. It is estimated that within a decade, the median diameter of invasive breast cancers will only be 1cm if mammographic screening of the population becomes more extensive, or universal. The probability of an axillary metastasis in patients with a primary invasive breast cancer of that size is 10%. Detection: Screening mammography is the best method of detecting early breast cancer as illustrated on the right figures.

Imagine a Future Free of Breast Cancer
Against Breast Cancer funds an innovative and unique research programme into new treatment and prevention of breast cancer, focusing particularly on metastases and survival after breast cancer. A team of researchers, funded by ABC, is based at University College London Hospitals with ABC units around the UK. The ABC Research Team's aim is to find a vaccine against breast cancer. Their three-pronged attack looks at how the cancer cell, patients' natural resistance and their environment (especially diet and lifestyle) interact. Contact ABC for further information at: info@aabc.org.uk
Any questions regarding breast cancer that we feel unable to answer will automatically be sent on to the Breast Cancer Care email service (unless you request otherwise). Beware of the Dark Side of Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
by Sherrill Sellman
There has been much ado in the press recently about the wonders of the drug tamoxifen (nolvadex). It has been heralded as a major breakthrough in the treatment and possible prevention of breast cancer. Tamoxifen is now the number one recommended drug treatment for women recovering from breast cancer. With half a billion dollars (US) in annual revenues , it is currently used by more women with breast cancer than any other prescription drug. But as is the case with all pharmaceutical drugs, there are serious dangers which seem to be conveniently glossed over. Far from the savior of women's lives, it has potential lethal side-effects.

The Breast
The female breasts are modified sweat glands composed of lobes and lobules interspersed with adipose tissue and connective tissue. Ducts drain from each lobule. These converge to form a lactiferous duct that drains from each lobe. The lactiferous ducts merge just beneath the nipple to form a lactiferous sinus. The functional secretory unit in lactation is the terminal duct lobular unit. Here, each duct has a lining epithelium surrounded by a thin myoepithelial cell layer responsive to oxytocin, the hormone that stimulates lactation. Neoplasms may arise in either the ductular epithelium, lobules, or the stroma. However, the majority of cancers arise in the ducts.
  • Normal breast, high power microscopic. Normal breast, duct with myoepithelial cells identified by immunoperoxidase staining for actin, high power microscopic.
  • Incidence of Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is very rare before age 20 and is rarely diagnosed in women younger than age 25. Past that age, the incidence rises steadily to reach a peak around the age of menopause. The rate of increase is lessened after menopause, but older women are still at increasing risk over time. About 1 in 8 women in the United States and Canada will develop breast cancer. This incidence is similar for many European countries. However, breast cancer is much less common in Asia.

    What's It All About?
Cancer is responsible for 20% of all deaths in the United States. What is being done about it? One of the hottest (and most controversial) areas of cancer research today involves screening people for cancer before symptoms develop. One way this may be possible is through genetic testing , that is, looking for specific cancer-related genes in a person's cells. Some of the most recent discoveries in this field involve breast cancer. Before we delve into the heart of the controversy, let's get some background information.
