Breast cancer, breast feeding and tobacco smoke Phillip Whidden That lung cancer is a fatal result of passive smoking , is well known. Heart disease caused by environmental tobacco smoke causes about 10 times as many deaths in second-hand smokers as the lung-cancer deaths brought on by inhaling other people's tobacco smoke. However, I shall present evidence today that tobacco-smoke pollution is much more powerful in causing breast cancer in women than in causing either lung cancer or heart disease. I shall also show why this evidence about breast cancer is very important for babies and children. But before I do that, I want to raise a point about how difficult it is to get journalists to pay attention to what is important in scientific research instead of paying attention to unimportant scientific reports. I will do this by marking a very bad anniversary. Last year, almost exactly a year ago today, on May 20, scientists reported that they had found evidence that active smoking reduces the risk of breast cancer in women who carry the mutant genes BRCA1 or BRAC2. That was a Wednesday. The media in Europe and North America shouted this message to the world: SMOKING MAY REDUCE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER. That same week, however, news releases telling the truth had been coordinated to be sent out in both Europe and North America for journalists to report on the Monday, two days earlier. Not a single television, radio, newpaper or magazine report told the public on that Monday that both active and passive smoking lead to a very large increased risk of breast cancer. Instead, all the reports were disgracefully about the Wednesday publication of the scientific report on BRCA1 and BRAC2 genes and the supposed reduction in risk of breast cancer due to smoking.

The Alliance of Boulder County on Tobacco and Health Cigarette Smoking Linked to Breast Cancer By Will Boggs, MD Their study of 132 families with at least three breast or ovarian cancer patients found that patients' sisters and daughters who smoked were more than twice as likely to develop breast cancer, compared with the nonsmoking sisters and daughters of patients. In families with the strongest genetic riskthose with at least five members with cancersmoking was an even more significant risk factor. Patients' sisters and daughters who smoked at some point in their lives were nearly six times more likely to develop breast cancer than relatives who never smoked. The researchers explain that smoking boosts carcinogens, or cancer-causing chemicals, in the blood. These chemicals can cause mutations in the DNA of breast cells which, over time, lead to cancer. The study authors call for further research into the link between cigarette smoking and breast cancer among women with a genetic risk. "If you don't smoke, don't start. If you do smoke, it's never too late to quit," Sellers said. NOTE: Secondhand smoke has long been associated with a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

News Release Back to Releases March 15, 2000 News Release Breast cancer linked to second-hand smoke OTTAWA - A Health Canada study reports that second-hand smoke may increase the risk of breast cancer. The study, Passive and Active Smoking and Breast Cancer Risk in Canada, 1994-97 , is being published today in the scientific journal Cancer Causes and Control . It provides evidence suggesting that the risk of breast cancer is greater among women who have been exposed regularly and for long periods of time to second-hand smoke, even though they, themselves, have never smoked. The longer the exposure, the higher the risk. After comparing 1,420 women diagnosed with breast cancer to a similar number of women without cancer, the study found that long-term exposure to second-hand smoke was associated with more than a 100% increase in premenopausal breast cancer risk, and a 30% increase in postmenopausal breast cancer. The study also found that among current women smokers, premenopausal breast cancer risk was 90% higher, and postmenopausal risk was 60% higher. Until recently, breast cancer has generally not been associated with women's smoking. However the six previously published studies of second-hand smoke and breast cancer have each suggested increased risk associated with second-hand smoke and with active smoking. This new Canadian study, the largest study of the issue published to date, extends that evidence. While a study of this nature cannot confirm a causal relationship of second-hand smoke to breast cancer, it can contribute to the identification of it can serve to identify important associations.
