The Infinite Mind: Borderline Personality Disorder Week of July 4, 2001
Statistics on Borderline Personality Disorder can be hard to come by. But reliable estimates indicate as many as one in fifty Americans may suffer from the disorder. It was first recognized in the 1930s, but therapists still argue over how to define and treat it. In fact, many object to the name itself, since personality disorders are often seen as less "serious" than the major mental illnesses like schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. This week on The Infinite Mind, we learn about the symptoms of BPD, why it is so frustrating for therapists to treat it, and a new form of therapy that has been effective. First, we hear from Kathleen. Kathleen is currently studying for her master's degree in social work, and plans to be a psychotherapist. She describes her own struggle with borderline personality disorder, which resulted in her being hospitalized in Maine. Kathleen describes her overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, which led to her slashing and burning herself in order to feel relief from her anxiety and numbness. She repeatedly overdosed on pills and thrived on the drama of being taken to the emergency room under police escort. She was angry, and aware that other people including therapists and other caregivers were afraid of her due to her rage. She had trouble forming an alliance with caregivers and didn't really want to get better. What she did want was to get rid of herself.

Borderline patients are among the most difficult to treat, especially in today's climate of managed care. This course offers practitioners concrete suggestions for successful brief therapy with this population.
Individuals suffering from borderline personality disorder are notoriously difficult and frustrating clients. And like many other clients with severe personality disorders, the realities of managed care and shrinking budgets leave most of them out in the cold. This much needed professional guide offers treatment approaches aimed
toward realistic short-term goals: helping clients to stabilize emotions, decrease vulnerability, and work towards more adaptive day-to-day functioning. The author covers diagnostic issues, reviews the treatment strategies drawn from a variety of different models and approaches. This is a unique and much needed book.

Note: If you have been the victim of domestic violence, please e-mail me and tell me about it. What happened? Did you tell anyone about it? Why or why not? Did you seek help? Why or why not? If you did seek help, did you get it? May we publish your story here? We'll do it anonymously, unless you give specific permission to use your name and/or e-mail address. Know a man who may be battered? Print out this page and give it to him. Often, it'll be enough to get him to talk to you about it if not right away, perhaps in a bit. And talking to another man about it is the first step in healing in survival.
Remember: TV star and comedian Phil Hartman never talked about his marital problems, either, except to joke about having to leave the house when his wife was mad. He told everyone the marriage was wonderful as so many men do. Are You Battered or Abused?
