Paranoid
Paranoid personality disorder is characterized by a distrust of others and a constant suspicion that people around you have sinister motives. People with this disorder tend to have excessive trust in their own knowledge and abilities and usually avoid close relationships with others. They search for hidden meanings in everything and read hostile intentions into the actions of others. They are quick to challenge the loyalties of friends and loved ones and often appear cold and distant to others. They usually shift blame to others and tend to carry long grudges.
Schizoid
People with schizoid personality disorder avoid relationships and do not show much emotion. They genuinely prefer to be alone and do not secretly wish for popularity. They tend to seek jobs that require little social contact. Their social skills are often weak and they do not show a need for attention or acceptance. They are perceived as humorless and distant and often are termed "loners."
Schizotypal
Many believe that schizotypal personality disorder represents mild schizophrenia. The disorder is characterized by odd forms of thinking and perceiving, and individuals with this disorder often seek isolation from others. They sometimes believe to have extra sensory ability or that unrelated events relate to them in some important way. They generally engage in eccentric behavior and have difficulty concentrating for long periods of time. Their speech is often over elaborate and difficult to follow.

Personal Borderline Story about how it is to live with Borderline Personality Disorder
The core disorder in BPD is emotional dysregulation. Emotional dysregulation is viewed as a joint outcome of biological disposition, environmental context, and the transaction between the two during development. The theory asserts that borderline individuals have difficulties in regulating several, if not all, emotions. This systemic dysregulation is produced by emotional vulnerability and by maladaptive and inadequate emotion modulation strategies. From: Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder. By Marsha Linehan. 1993
The symptoms of borderline patients are similar to those for which most people seek psychiatric help: depression, mood swings, the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol as a means of trying to feel better; obsessions, phobias, feelings of emptiness and loneliness, inability to tolerate being alone, problems about eating.
The one word that best characterizes borderline personality is "instability." Their emotions are unstable, fluctuating wildly for no discernible reason. Their thinking is unstablerational and clear at times, quite psychotic at other times. Their behavior is unstable, often with periods of excellent conduct, high efficiency and trustworthiness alternating with outbreaks of babyishness, suddenly quitting a job, withdrawing into isolation, failing.

‘I wish I had never been diagnosed with BPD. With another diagnosis yet similar behaviour I was treated so differently. Possibly the most painful part of this illness (I will call it that) is the discrimination. And the only reason for this is the diagnosis, not the way I feel, behave or speak, because that was the same before.’ Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a controversial diagnosis. This booklet aims to help people to understand when the diagnosis might be given and its consequences. It suggests sources of help for those diagnosed with this problem, their friends and relatives.
What is borderline personality disorder?
BPD is one of many personality disorders listed in the manuals used by clinicians when they are giving someone a psychiatric diagnosis. The word 'personality' refers to the ongoing pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviour that makes us who we are. A personality disorder may be diagnosed when it's felt that several areas of someone's personality are causing them or others problems in everyday life. This diagnosis is very controversial, because it implies that someone's whole personality is flawed - rather than just one aspect of them. Some psychiatrists argue that it's impossible to treat someone's personality and that it's wrong to apply medical terms and treatments to a personality. This means it’s usually the symptoms of BPD that are treated, rather than the disorder as a whole. (See

Overview It's one of several types of personality disorders, all of which reflect an inability to accept the demands and the limitations of the outside world. These disorders may regularly interfere with your behavior and your interactions with family, friends or co-workers. Among the other personality disorders are paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. People with BPD have an enormous need for love and a terrible fear of closeness. They have disturbed thinking and are constantly in a state of emotional turmoil. They're calm and rational at times, but they may explode into inappropriate anger or rage at some perceived rejection or criticism.

and the serial bully
Some visitors to Bully OnLine have suggested that the bullies in their lives exhibit characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder. It seems to me that in some cases Borderline Personality Disorder could be the manifestation in adulthood of a psychiatric injury caused by childhood abuse which may have been intentional or unintentional. In people whose behaviour profile is inclined towards that of a target the disorder seems to manifest in varying degrees as a sense of heightened fragility. In people whose behaviour profile is inclined towards that of a bully the disorder seems to manifest as aggression towards others as described on this web site. The main symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder are:
  • Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation (called "splitting"). Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self.

The Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Essential Feature The essential feature of the Borderline Personality Disorder is a pervasive pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affect. There is marked impulsivity that begins by early adulthood (DSM-IV™, 1994, p. 650). The ICD-10 refers to BPD as the Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder which is characterized by impulsivity, unpredictable moods, outbursts of emotion, behavioral explosions, quarrelsome behavior, and conflicts with others. The ICD-10 divides this category into two types: the impulsive type (characterized by emotional instability and lack of impulse control) and the borderline type (characterized by disturbances of self-image, aims, and internal preferences; chronic feelings of emptiness; intense and unstable interpersonal relationships; and self-destructive behavior) (ICD-10, 1994, p. 228). Benjamin notes that individuals with BPD often suffer from thought disorders, affective disorders, dissociative disorders, alcohol and substance abuse, eating disorders, and anxiety disorders. She suggests that with BPD, everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. BPD involves disorder in every domain of function: cognition, mood, and behavior (Benjamin, 1993, p. 113).
