Diagnostic Procedures for Bone Disorders
How are bone disorders diagnosed?
In addition to a complete medical history and physical examination, diagnostic procedures for bone disorders may include the following:
  • laboratory tests for blood, urine, and other body fluids
  • x-ray - a diagnostic test which uses invisible electromagnetic energy beams to produce images of internal tissues, bones, and organs onto film.
  • computed tomography scan (Also called a CT or CAT scan.) - a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices), both horizontally and vertically, of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than general x-rays. A CT scan provides information about bone, muscle, and fat. It is also used to assist the physician in locating the exact area for a biopsy.
  • magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of large magnets, radiofrequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body. MRI scans provide detailed information about soft tissue, the bone marrow cavity, and bone tumors.

  • I'm 39 years old and have suffered from a very rare genetic bone disease called Progressive Diaphyseal Dysplasia (Camurati-Engelmann disease) for 20 years. I've tried to research this disease several times with very limited results. Is there any research at all any where being conducted to understand the mechanics behind this disease? And, are there any treatments experimental or otherwise besides morphine and steroids?
The most recent paper I can find on your illness was published in November 2000, but there seems to be researchers in several areas of the world interested in the disease (which is a good sign!)
I read an interesting abstract from a paper published in 1997 in Argentina, about two women who had good results with using calcium supplements and pamidronate. They both had what is called high bone turnover with their illness, so I don't know whether this paper would even apply to your particular case. You might want to print this out and talk with your doctor about it.

http://www.pdrhealth.com/content/rx_drugs/chapters/fgrx04.shtml
Osteoporosis, Low Back Pain, and Other Bone Disorders The human skeleton is an intricate framework of 206 bones that give the body its structure and shape. These bones serve as armor for vital organs and soft tissue, a storehouse for minerals, and a birthplace for blood cells. Together, the bones act in concert with the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissue to give humans an amazing range of movement. Most bone diseases are rare, but a few pose serious health problems. Osteoporosis, the brittle-bone disease, affects more than 10 million Americans, and an additional 19 million have a low hip-bone mass that puts them at increased risk of the disease. Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is widespread among people over 40. (See Chapter 3, "Coping with Arthritis.") Low back pain, which often results from slipped vertebrae or disks, is the second most frequent cause of lost work for adults under 45 years of age.
How Bones Are Structured
Bones are made of inorganic saltsincluding calcium and phosphateimbedded in collagen fibers. Though solid and seemingly completely formed, bones undergo constant renewal and change. The marrow, or soft center, of certain bones serves as a spawning ground for the many different cells that make up the blood. There are three types of boneslong, short, and flat or irregular. Long bones include the humerus, radius, and ulna of the arm; the femur, tibia, and fibula of the leg; and the phalanges, metacarpals, and metatarsals of the hand and foot. The tarsal in the foot and the carpal in the wrist are short bones. Flat bones can be found in the head and also include the ribs, breastbone, and collarbone. Irregular bones are located mostly in the spine; certain others are situated in the head.

Bone disorder drugs
Definition of Bone disorder drugs
Bone disorder drugs are medicines used to treat diseases that weaken the bones.
Purpose for Bone disorder drugs
The drugs described here are used to treat or prevent osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) in women past menopause as well as older men. They also are used prescribed for Paget's disease, a painful condition that weakens and deforms bones, and they are used to control calcium levels in the blood. Bone is living tissue. Like other tissue, bone is constantly being broken down and replaced with new material. Normally, there is a balance between the breakdown of old bone and its replacement with new bone. But when something goes wrong with the process, bone disorders may result.
Description of Bone disorder drugs
Bone disorder drugs are available only with a physician's prescription and come in tablet, nasal spray, and injectable forms. Commonly used bone disorder drugs are alendronate (Fosamax), calcitonin (Miacalcin, Calcimar), and raloxifene (Evista). Raloxifene belongs to a group of drugs known as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), which act like estrogen in some parts of the body but not in others. This makes the drugs less likely to cause some of the harmful effects that estrogen may cause. Unlike estrogen, raloxifene does not increase the risk of breast cancer. In fact, research suggests that raloxifene may even reduce that risk.

Other Bone Disorders: Arthritis Arthritis is a condition that can cause joint pain or swelling and often limits a person's ability to get around. Arthritis is a very common and usually chronic condition, and most people find that making changes to their daily activities helps them to better cope with the disease. People of any age can have this condition, but usually more women than men suffer. Symptoms for arthritis include joint swelling, stiffness, and pain. The pain can be felt all or some of the time, and may occur with certain activities but not with others. Bone Cancer When cancer originates in the bone, it is referred to as
