Body Dysmorphic Disorder- A Brain Disease?

Though Body Dysmorphic Disorder, commonly known as BDD, was first documented in nineteenth century, it is not a well known disorder. However, despite its lack of notoriety, BDD is not a rare disease, affecting two percent of the population . As scientists attempt to discover more about this illness to learn how to treat it, psychological and sociocultural factors have been considered to be possible causes for BDD
When discussing the origins of BDD, scientists and patients have been inclined to attribute BDD to psychological factors. Many have felt that BDD arises from childhood trauma, resulting in channeled feelings of conflict, shame, or guilt

They have the first surgery and then the second and often the third. No matter how much is taken away they still see breasts. In one case during the second surgery the young man had muscle removed and created a major distortion of his chest. It is a fairly common condition and exists in various degrees. It is difficult to treat but the first option is drugs and for those that it helps it is a life saver. The most common treatment is Cognitive Behavior Therapy which reports good results for many. I believe that EMDR holds promise for many in the future. Read the links and books below for more information.

To learn more about "The OCD Workbook" and order a copy, click here Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a preoccupation with a minor bodily defect or imagined defect which is believed to be conspicuous to others. It causes significant distress or impairment in functioning. The name is derived from the Greek word, dismorfia dis meaning abnormal or apart, and morpho meaning shape. Before 1987, BDD was referred to as dysmorphobia, so named by psychopathologist Enrique Morselli in 1891. Most people with BDD are not "ugly" at all. Their physical appearance is likely to go unnoticed. They are usually shy, with poor eye contact and low self-esteem. They often go to extremes to camouflage their imagined ugliness, wearing sunglasses, hats, or bulky clothing. Several studies have found that almost 90% of BDD obsessions are face related, followed by hair, skin, and eyes (Yaryura-Tobias and Neziroglu, 1997b). But any body part can be the focus of concentration. Often, people with facial and skin dysmorphia pick and dig at their skin. Some have concerns involving body symmetry. Others have muscle dysmorphia, a type of BDD in which patients worry that their bodies are small and puny. Usually just the opposite is true; typically they are typically large and muscular. BDD by proxy is a form in which a person obsesses about supposed flaws in another person’s appearance.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder Posted by Pennywise on Wednesday September 10, @11:53PM
from the my-butt-is-too-big dept.

The NYT recently ran this story (FRR) about Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a debilitating disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with certain features of their body and fixated on their perceived imperfections. The article interviews Katharine Phillips , an expert on BDD. Dr. Phillips estimates that body dysmorphic disorder affects 1 to 2 percent of Americans, men and women. "B.D.D. remains vastly underrecognized and vastly underdiagnosed," Dr. Phillips said. "Most people probably know someone with B.D.D. but just don't realize it." For a more in depth look at BDD, check out a lecture (RealAudio) by Phillips.

Artists, designers and people who have been to art school are a staggering five times more likely to suffer body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a mental illness characterised by a distorted body image and a preoccupation with slight or imagined defects in physical appearance than other mentally ill patients. A team of researchers led by Dr David Veale at London's Royal Free College compared 100 patients with BDD with 100 depressed patients, 100 with obsessive compulsive disorder and 100 with post-traumatic stress disorder. 20% of the BDD patients had a job in art and design or had been to art school compared with just 4% of depressed patients, 3% of those with obsessive compulsive disorder and none of those with post-traumatic stress disorder. The study is consistent with other research which suggests that patients with BDD have idealised values about the importance of appearance and a tendency to perfectionism.

    BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER SYMPTOMS
The primary body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) symptom is an obsessive preoccupation with a perceived defect in one's physical appearance, which is greatly exaggerated or completely imagined. The fears are most frequently focused on the appearance of the head and face, but may involve any body part. Body dysmorphic disorder symptoms go beyond normal concern with one's appearance, and may significantly impair academic and professional functioning, as well as interpersonal relationships. In extreme cases, an individual experiencing body dysmorphic disorder symptoms may completely shun any contact with people in an effort to avoid having the perceived defect observed by others. Body dysmorphic disorder symptoms may involve the following body parts:
  • Moles and freckles being too large or noticeable Acne Minor scars or skin aberrations Too much facial or body hair Too little hair on the head Size and/or shape of the nose or eyes Size and/or shape of the genitalia Size and/or shape of the feet Breast size Muscles being too small Overall size, shape and/or symmetry of the face or another body part

    BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER TREATMENT
The primary form of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) treatment is cognitive behavior therapy , both with and without medication. Cognitive behavior therapy for body dysmorphic disorder treatment involves the patient and therapist working together and taking active roles in assessing the problem. The goal is to devise concrete, active steps towards alleviating the symptoms Body dysmorphic disorder treatment using cognitive behavior therapy
Body dysmorphic disorder treatment using medication Although extensive data to support this does not yet exist, it is felt that combining medication with cognitive behavior therapy may increase an individual's ability to benefit from body dysmorphic disorder treatment. Medication may be helpful for those individuals experiencing co-existing depression. Common body dysmorphic disorder medications that may be used in treatment include anti-depressants such as: Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, and Anafranil. These medications have been found to be helpful in treating OCD, and are believed to help those suffering from body dysmorphic disorder as well as other obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. If you or someone you know may require treatment for body dysmorphic disorder, contact Rogers Memorial Hospital at 1-800-767-4411 for an initial needs assessment, or a referral to a treatment provider in your area. Alternate Names : Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Pain Disorder Definition Pain disorder is persistent and chronic pain at one or more sites in which psychological factors are thought to play a role. Pain is one of the most common reasons that people seek medical attention. In pain disorder, the suffering is so severe that it impairs a person's ability to function. Furthermore, the pain itself is thought to be related to psychological factors, such as stress or unconscious conflict. Individuals with this illness may have other medical problems, though these fail to account fully for the pain. Unfortunately, pain that is "psychological" in nature is often stigmatized both by medical professionals and the general public. A poor understanding of the connections between mind and body can lead to the misperception that if pain has a psychological cause it isn't "real" and should be able to be controlled without medical or mental health treatment.

Golden Girl Uma admits to having Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
    By Sherry Kahn
May 15th, 2001 In Snow White, the princess’ evil stepmother gazes into the looking glass, asking, “Mirror mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all?” Here in the real world, a person who gazes into a mirror thinking, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, I know I’m the ugliest of them all,” may be suffering from BDD, or Body Dysmorphic Disorder - certainly something far more dangerous than the stepmother's vanity. In a recent interview with Talk Magazine, even beauty goddess Uma Thurman admitted to struggling with the disorder - one that has its victims feeling that they are simply not attractive. The lanky 6-foot blonde admitted to "being troubled about her weight" ever since giving birth to her daughter, Maya, in July 1998. Thurman, whose beauty and bodacious body are celebrated world-wide, has recently been named the spokesmodel for Lancome's Miracle perfume. She also stars in a new movie released this week, Golden Bowl.

Ask the Doctor: What is Body Dysmorphic Disorder?
Katharine A. Phillips, M.D., is chief of outpatient services and director of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Body Image Program at Butler Hospital in Providence, R.I., and assistant professor of psychiatry at the Brown University School of Medicine. Youth with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) worry about some aspect of their appearance. They worry, for example, that they have pimples or that their skin is scarred or bumpy, their nose is too big, they are fat or too thin. Or they may think something else is wrong with how they look. When others tell them that they look fine or that the flaw they perceive is minimal (or nonexistent), youth with this disorder find it hard to believe this reassurance. Adolescents with BDD think a lot about their perceived physical flaw, generally for at least an hour a day. Some say they're obsessed. Most find that they don't have as much control over their thoughts about the body flaw as they would like. In addition, the appearance concern causes significant distress (for example, anxiety or depression) or it causes significant problems in functioning. Although some youth with this disorder manage to function well despite their distress, many find that their appearance concerns cause problems for them. For example, they may find it hard to concentrate on their job or schoolwork, which may suffer, and relationship problems are common. Adolescents with BDD may have few friends, avoid dating, and feel very self-conscious in social situations.
