Could bionic eye end blindness?
Jens completely lost his sight 18 years ago, but with the use of special glasses, he can find his way through rooms. By Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Kristi Petersen (CNN) Artificial vision for the blind was once the stuff of science fiction Lt. Geordi La Forge's visor on "Star Trek" or the bionic eye of "The Six Million Dollar Man." But now, a limited form of artificial vision is a reality one some say is one of the greatest triumphs in medical history. "We are now at a watershed," Joseph Lazzaro, author of "Adaptive Technologies for Learning and Work Environments," told CNN. "We are at the beginning of the end of blindness with this type of technology." Any scientific advance would have broad implications. According to statistics from Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc., 1.1 million people in the United States are legally blind, while worldwide 42 million people are without sight. The Dobelle Institute is among several institutions trying in essence to create a new cornea through technology. The cornea allows light into the interior of the eye.

Alot of people have no clue what it means to be colorblind. Here is some quickfacts:
  • First of all most color impaired can see all colors. Very few color blind people can only see in black in white (less than 1% of us).
  • Color blindness is the inability to perceive differences between some colors that other people can distinguish.
  • It is most often of genetic nature, but might also occur because of eye, nerve or brain damage or due to use of some chemical substances.
  • 5% to 8% of the men and 0.5% of the women of the world are born colorblind.
  • A color-defective male always inherits his deficiency from his mother, the mother however is not colorblind
  • The defect of color vision that is characterized by the inability to see the color red is called protanopia.
  • Bulls are not colorblind, it is the motion of the cape which angers them.
  • In World War II, colorblind men were sent on special missions, because their decreased ability to see green led to an increased ability to see through or detect camouflage.

144. Introduction To IAPB-International Agency For The Prevention Of Blindness
Leads an international effort in mobilising resources for blindness prevention activities.
http://www.iapb.org/introduction.htm
INTRODUCTION
WHY IAPB ?
There are an estimated 45 million blind people and 1.5 million blind children in the world. Over 90% of the blind live in developing countries. Because of the increase in life expectancy and the projected increase in world population, this number is likely to rise to more than 75 million by the year 2020 if current trends continue. Of every ten blind people, seven live in Asia and two in Africa. Six of the ten can be cured by cataract surgery and a further three could be prevented from going blind if eye care services were readily available. Blindness is therefore mainly a problem of developing countries, but a problem, which could be avoided in up to 80% of cases. WHAT IS IAPB? The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness was established in 1975 as a coordinating, umbrella organisation to lead an international effort in mobilising resources for blindness prevention activities. Its first major achievement was to promote the establishment of a WHO Programme for Prevention of Blindness, with which it has remained strongly linked. OBJECTIVES Within the mandate of combating avoidable blindness, the Agency has major objectives. These are:

CHANGING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE BLIND!
The problem of blindness is not the lack of eyesight. The real problem is the misunderstanding and lack of information that exists.  If a blind person has proper training and opportunity, blindness is only a physical nuisance.

Marc Green Seminar Available on this topic. Item: An automobile driver looks left down a sidewalk and pulls forward into a driveway. She hears a thud, looks down and sees a bicyclist on the ground near her left front fender. The bicyclist is seriously injured. Item: A nurse pulls a vial from a cabinet. She looks at the label, fills the syringe and then injects the patient. The patient receives the wrong drug and dies. Item: A submarine commander looks through his periscope and sees no ships nearby. He orders the ballast blown and the submarine to surface. He then hears the clank of a ship hitting his deck and realizes that he has surfaced with another ship directly overhead. The ship overturns, killing 9 people aboard. Item: An Eastern airline pilot and his fellow officers see a bulb flash on the control panel. They become so concerned with the cause, that they don't notice the plane approaching the ground or hear the alarm. The crash kills over 100 people. "Inattentional Blindness" All of these real accidents and a large number of others occur under strikingly similar circumstances: someone performing a task simply fails to see what should have been plainly visible. Afterwards, the person cannot explain the lapse. The person making the error is likely to be held negligent. While assigning blame and deeming someone as stupid or careless might provide emotional catharsis, it does little explain why such accidents are so commonplace. Why do intelligent, diligent and thorough people so often fail to see the obvious?

The campaign of fear waged against genetic modification is based largely on fantasy and a complete lack of respect for science and logic. Illustration: Dyson I was raised in the tiny fishing and logging village of Winter Harbour on the north-west tip of Vancouver Island, where salmon spawned in the streams of the adjoining Pacific rainforest. In school, I discovered ecology, and realised that through science I could gain insight into the natural beauties I had known as a child. In the late 1960s I was transformed into a radical environmental activist. A ragtag group of activists and I sailed a leaky old halibut boat across the North Pacific to block the last US hydrogen bomb tests under President Richard Nixon. In the process I co-founded Greenpeace. By the mid-1980s my interest was in "sustainable development" that would take environmental ideas and incorporate them into the traditional social and economic values that govern public policy and our daily behaviour. Every morning, 6 billion people wake up with real needs for food, energy and materials.

LONDON, England (Reuters) Smokers are up to four times more likely than non-smokers to develop a disease that is the leading cause of adult blindness, public health experts said in the British Medical Journal on Friday. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an irreversible and progressive illness that robs people of their sight. Although its causes are unknown, evidence from three large studies shows smokers have a higher risk of suffering from it. "Smokers are three to four times as likely to develop AMD," Richard Edwards, a public health expert at Manchester University, told Reuters. In Britain an estimated one in five cases of AMD are attributable to smoking. AMD caused by smoking has impaired the sight of about 54,000 people and blinded nearly 18,000.
