Insect bites and stings
Everyone gets insect bites and or stings. They can be determined by their appearance and a treatment can be rendered right away.
Insect bites and stings mainly appear red and swollen. Yet there are key factors you can pick up on when looking at a bite or sting. General treatments are to wash with soap and water then apply ice. Below are six common bites or stings as well as their appearance and treatments. Mosquito Bites bodyOffer(20042) They appear as an itchy red mound, with a tiny pinhole in the center. To stop itching, clean with soap and water. Then you can hold ice on it or dab it with calamine lotion. Bee Stings There would be a black stinger that causes swelling and soreness. Remove the stinger with a thumbnail or tweezers. After the stinger has been removed rub with ice to reduce swelling. Wasp Sting First the area will turn white, then turn red and swollen. Seeing this, clean with soap and water. Put an ice cube on the affected area for ten minutes, remove for ten minutes and repeat as much as you feel required. Spider Bites There are a couple different bites, one appears swollen and red looking like a bulls eye. A black widow bite appears swollen with faint red bite marks. A brown recluse bite will sting and be red, with a blister forming at site. Wash with soap and water then apply ice, if you think it was either a black widow or a brown recluse spider call 911 immediately.

Zap Out Spring Bites and Stings
by Christopher G. Haddock, M.D. The weather is warming, the days are growing longer-and insects are awakening from their "long winter naps." As spring arrives in the Tennessee Valley, you'll inevitably encounter a wide variety of insects in your outdoor activities. But the great outdoors can still be enjoyable if you arm yourself with a little knowledge about insect bites and stings. Common Reactions
Fortunately, most bites and stings cause only minor swelling and irritation. Insects that cause minor reactions include mosquitoes, bees, wasps, gnats, chiggers, most spiders, and the infamous "no-see-ums."
Swelling, itching, and mild discomfort may accompany these bites. Ice, direct pressure, hydrocortisone cream, and Benadryl can provide relief.
Infection of the area around a bite usually produces a large amount of swelling, redness, and pain that doesn't go away even after treatment. This condition, known as cellulitis, should be seen by your doctor. Cellulitis often requires antibiotics and an update of your tetanus shot.

Definition
Humans can be injured by the bites or stings of many kinds of animals, including mammals such as dogs, cats, and fellow humans; arthropods such as spiders, bees, and wasps; snakes; and marine animals such as jellyfish and stingrays. Description
Mammals
Dogs

In the United States, where the dog population exceeds 50 million, dogs surpass all other mammals in the number of bites inflicted on humans. However, most dog-bite injuries are minor. A telephone survey of U.S. households conducted in 1994 led researchers to estimate that 3,737,000 nonmedically treated dog bites occurred in the United States that year, versus 757,000 that were medically treated. Studies also show that most dog bites are from pets or other dogs known to the victim, that males are more likely than females to be bitten, and that children face a greater risk than adults. Each year, about 10-20 Americansmostly children under 10 years oldare killed by dogs. Dog bites resulted in an estimated 334,000 emergency-room visits annually throughout the United States in 1992-94. More than half of the bites seen by emergency departments originated in the home. Children under 10 years old were more likely than older people to visit an emergency room for bite treatment, especially boys 5-9 years old. Children under 10 years old were also much more liable to be bitten on the face, neck, and head. Nearly all of the injuries suffered by the emergency-room patients were of "low severity," and most were treated and released without being admitted to hospital or sent to another facility.

Homeopathic Remedies for Insect Bites and Stings Also indexed as: Bee Sting, Bites (Insect), Sting (Insect) Homeopathic remedies can be useful for relieving the pain and swelling of insect bites and stings. If a person is allergic to the venom of a stinging insect, or if a bite is from a poisonous spider, emergency medical attention is needed right away. (Remedies can still be used, to reduce the early trauma and to help recovery.) What Is Homeopathy? Aconitum napellus: This remedy can be helpful if a person feels fearful or panicked after being stung. Cutting, stabbing, or burning pain may be felt, along with swelling, tingling, or numbness. Aconitum should be used immediately, while symptoms are intense, and can be followed by another remedy, as indicated. Apis mellifica: If a bite or bee sting causes puffy, tender swelling that is pink or red and hot to the touch, this remedy may be helpful. The area stings and burns, and cold applications bring relief. (If a person is allergic to insect venom, especially bee-stings, Apis may help to reduce the swelling of the passages, given as first aid while on the way to emergency medical care.)

These severe reactions can be rapidly fatal if untreated. Call 911 if you are with someone who has trouble breathing or goes into

KidsHealth
Parents Emergencies: What to Do
The two greatest risks from most insect stings and bites are allergic reaction (which may occasionally be fatal) and infection (more likely and less serious). What to Do: Bee, Wasp, Hornet, and Yellow Jacket Stings
  • A bee will leave behind a stinger attached to a venom sac. Don't try to pull it out, which may release more venom. Gently scrape it out with a blunt-edged object, such as a credit card or a dull knife.
  • Wash the area carefully with soap and water. Do this two to three times a day until the skin is healed.
  • Apply a cold pack, an ice pack wrapped in a cloth, or a cold, wet washcloth for a few minutes.
  • Apply a paste of baking soda and water and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Give acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) for pain.
  • For pain and itching, give an over-the-counter antihistamine, if your doctor says it's OK; follow dosage instructions for your child's age and weight.
  • A sting anywhere in the mouth warrants immediate medical attention. That's because stings in the mucous membranes of the mouth can quickly cause severe swelling that may block airways. You should also seek emergency care if you see any of the following symptoms, which may indicate an allergic reaction:
    • large area of swelling
    • abnormal breathing
    • tightness in throat or chest
    • dizziness
    • hives or rash
    • fainting
    • nausea or vomiting
    • persistent pain or swelling (more than 72 hours)

Wash well and treat any cut with an antiseptic such as povidone-iodine. Where possible avoid bandages and Band-aids, which can keep wounds wet. Coral cuts are notoriously slow to heal and if they are not adequately cleaned, small pieces of coral can become embedded in the wound. Clean any cut thoroughly with an antiseptic.
Bee and wasp stings are usually painful rather than dangerous. Calamine lotion or Stingose spray will give relief and ice packs will reduce the pain and swelling. There are some spiders with dangerous bites but antivenenes are usually available. Scorpion stings are notoriously painful and in Mexico can actually be fatal. Scorpions often shelter in shoes or clothing. Certain cone shells found in Australia and the Pacific can sting dangerously or even fatally. There are various fish and other sea creatures which can sting or bite dangerously or which are dangerous to eat. Take heed of local advice.
Snakes
To minimise your chances of being bitten always wear boots, socks and long trousers when walking through undergrowth where snakes may be present. Don't put your hands into holes and crevices, and be careful when collecting firewood.

Insect bites often cause one or more red bumps that are usually itchy and sometimes painful. Often there is a small hole in the middle of the bite, perhaps with the end of the sting sticking out. Apart from this local irritation, the bite is not usually dangerous provided the victim is not allergic to insect bites.
