Last Revision Date: April 2002 Common Questions, Quick Answers When am I at risk for getting a bite or sting?
  • Most stings happen in the summer or fall. Stinging insects in the U.S. are bees, yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, and fire ants. Insects are found near bushes, trees, and grass. Perfumes, hairsprays, scented lotions, and bright-colored clothes attract insects.
What are normal reactions to a bite or sting?
  • Reactions are different for everyone. Some reactions are worse than others. Most people aren't allergic to bites or stings. Normal reactions to a bite or sting are pain, swelling, and redness around the sting. More of the body than the stung area might swell. The whole arm might swell after a sting near the wrist. Swelling may last for 2 to 3 days.

Snakes
Should you see a snake, LEAVE IT ALONE - do not attempt to kill it as all snakes are protected by law, and besides, the creature will defend itself vigorously. Stay clear of likely habitats, and always pay special attention to young children playing near long grass and bush. Only approximately 15% of people struck by poisonous snakes are envenomated, but always treat for the worst case, and assume that venom has been injected.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
  • puncture marks, or parallel scratches on the skin - rarely any pain
  • anxiety
  • pale, cool skin with progressive onset of sweating
  • rapid, weak pulse
  • rapid, shallow breathing
  • breathing difficulties
  • blurred vision, drooping eyelids
  • difficulty swallowing and speaking
  • abdominal pain
  • nausea and/or vomiting
  • headache
  • collapse - progressing to a comatose state
CARE AND TREATMENT
  • SRABC
  • reassure
  • complete rest
  • call ambulance urgently
  • apply direct pressure over the bitten area
  • obtain a history
  • apply a firm bandage (pressure immobilisation bandage) starting from over the bite site, and then wind as far up the limb as possible to the armpit or groin
  • immobilise the limb with a splint
  • send any evidence of the snake to the hospital only if safe to do so.

Insect bites and stings
Insect bites and stings can be simply divided into 2 groups: venomous and non-venomous. A sting is usually from an attack by a venomous insect such as a bee or wasp, which uses this as a defence mechanism by injecting toxic and painful venom through its stinger. Whereas non-venomous insect bites pierce the skin to feed on your blood. This usually results in intense itching.
What causes insect bites and stings?
Common biting and stinging insects Venomous (stingers) Non-venomous (biters)
  • Bees Wasps Hornets Yellow jackets Fire ants Mosquitoes Fleas Ticks Lice Scabies Bed bugs
What are the signs and symptoms?
For most people, insect bites or stings cause a mild reaction. Venomous stings usually cause a stinging sensation or pain with redness and swelling of the area. Itch is usually not a concern. In some people who are sensitive to insect venom, a sting may cause a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis . This results in facial swelling, difficultly breathing and an itchy rash (

Stings And Bites When you are out camping in the great outdoors sooner or later you're going to get stung or bitten by any number of flying, creeping, crawling, or swimming creatures. Whether it is the sting of a scorpion in the southwestern desert, the bite of a copperhead in the Adirondacks of New York, the sting of a Portuguese Man of War at Padre Island National Seashore, or a bee sting in the alpine meadows of Glacier National Park, you should always be prepared whether you are camping in a recreational vehicle or hitting the wild backcountry. Bites and stings can be divided into five distinct groups. Insect bites and stings, like those from ticks, chiggers, flies, ants, bees, wasps, hornets and mosquitoes. Spider and scorpion bites and stings. Like those from a variety of spiders, the more famous being the black widow and the brown recluse, and a variety of scorpions. The next is marine life stings. This can be from jellyfish, Portuguese Man of War, or stingrays. Snakebites can be from any number of snakes, both venomous and non-venomous. And finally animal bites from little critters like bats, rats, squirrels and chipmunks.

Usually, the symptoms subside after 20 to 30 minutes. Example of a wasp sting, palmar side of the forearm. Note the bright red spot surrounded by a flare of swelling and redness about 1-2 inches across. Concerns:

Bites and stings
Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine by Patience Paradox
Definition
A bite is an injury caused by an animal, such as a mammal or insect, that breaks the skin. A sting is a puncture wound made by insects or marine animals. There is often a danger of infection from toxins or venom with bites and stings.
Description
In the United States, dogs surpass all other mammals in the number of bites inflicted on humans. Children face a greater risk than adults do, and children under 10 years old are more liable than anyone to suffer serious bites to the face, neck, and head. Cat bites are far less common than dog bites, but they carry a higher risk of infection. Bites from wild animals should be of especial concern due to the risk of rabies . More than 70,000 human-to-human bites a year are reported in the United States. Human bites are more infectious than those of any other animal.
