Bipolar Disorder in College Students
By Richard Boyum
UW-Eau Claire Counseling Services Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression often begins to show itself in college-age students. Listed below are a number of factors relating to bipolar disorder. 1) Bipolar Disorder has a biogenetic basis. It can be mild, moderate, or severe. Social and psychological factors can trigger or compound existing bipolar disorder. 2) Major symptoms include, but are not limited to, alcohol, marijuana and drug abuse, explosive anger, fights or agressive behavior, inappropriate sexual behavior (i.e. violation of others sexual boundaries, many different sexual partners), prolonged periods of sleeplessness, high levels of risky behavrio that may result in injury or death, delusions of grandur (i.e. believing you can do more than you can), ignoring normal responsibilities, excessive spending habits, extreme changes in eating patterns, suicidal thoughts, paranoia, and hallucinations. 3) Bipolar disorder in its early stages can be misdiagnosed, as alcohol or drug dependancy, anxiety disorders, schoid-affective disorder, major depressive disorder, or personality disorders such as narrsistic personality disorder. Each of these disorders may infact be a proper diagnosis, but may share symptoms with bipolar disorder. Treatment: Individuals with Bipolar Disorder benefit from a combination of medications and counseling. Lithium, anti-convolsents, and anti-depressants are usually the medications of choice. A psychiatrist can prescribe and monitor the medication. Also, a university physician can also help monitor medication. Counseling is also helpful in dealing with the behavioral aspects of this disorder. Self acceptance, stress management, time management, goal setting, and relationship concerns are some of the areas that students often need to discuss. The right medications and the amount of counseling needed is unique to each individual.

Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But there is good news: bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives. More than 2 million American adults, or about 1 percent of the population age 18 and older in any given year, have bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. However, some people have their first symptoms during childhood, and some develop them late in life. It is often not recognized as an illness, and people may suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person's life. Manic-depression distorts moods and thoughts, incites dreadful behaviors, destroys the basis of rational thought, and too often erodes the desire and will to live. It is an illness that is biological in its origins, yet one that feels psychological in the experience of it; an illness that is unique in conferring advantage and pleasure, yet one that brings in its wake almost unendurable suffering.

Tempering the Mania of Manic Depression
by Stephen L. Bernhardt
Bipolar Disorder - episodes of mania.
Any discussion of the process of bipolar disorder and mania cannot be entirely divorced from a discussion of the depressive response. Within any episode of mania lurks the possibility, the likelihood of impending depression. There are certain techniques and exercises which I have identified while dealing with my own periods of bipolar disorder mania which help temper the mania and thereby lessen the impact and severity of the subsequent depressive response. It is essential that you have read my article on Emotional Thought Stopping and are familiar with the concept and my suggestions for its use, before you attempt this exercise. I assume that if you are reading this in order to help temper your periods of bipolar disorder mania that this is not your first episode. Look back at your previous situation just prior to those episodes and see if you can identify if there was some event which triggered the episode and begin to identify how you felt at the start of the episode. It is important to be able to recognize these periods as early as possible so that you can begin this tempering exercise before it reaches a crisis stage. This is especially true if you begin your episodes with a euphoric feeling.

About bipolar disorder / manic depression
Manic-depression is a chronic mental illness, a physical disease of the brain. There is no known cause, but there is a proven hereditary influence. Many bipolar people have parents or extended family who suffered from depression, hyperactivity, rages, suicide or any number of behaviors. It is not a condition that can be cured but it can be controlled by medication. If you think you may have bipolar disorder, go and see a doctor immediately. (See also "Bad Times and Blessed Times" , a testimony of one person with bipolar disorder.)
Symptoms
There are two aspects of the bipolar disorder. Manic "highs" and depression "lows." Often these are called mood swings. The manic state is the high part of the cycle. It is characterized by hyper or excentric behaviors:
  • euphoria; feelings of joy or wellbeing grandiose thinking; able to accomplish anything

Dear World "A Suicide Letter" is exactly what it sounds like - a real suicide letter written by Paul Jones. Paul was diagnosed 3 1/2 years ago as having Bipolar 1, the most severe type of Bipolar Disorder, also known as Manic Depression. Twelve months ago Paul sat down with the intention of killing himself, something that over 20% of those who suffer from Bipolar illness will do. After writing his suicide letter for over 6 hours, Paul had found that he had talked himself out of his own suicide. After much discussion and deep thought, Paul was convinced that his own last words would not only help people understand Bipolar illness, but it also could very well help save the lives of others who suffer from this deadly and silent disease. Dear World "A Suicide Letter" has become a national and international phenomenon, selling thousands of copies in a very short period of time. Paul has also become one of the most sought after

From Wikipedia , the free encyclopedia.
As categorized by the DSM-IV bipolar disorder is a form of mood disorder characterised by a variation of mood between a phase of manic or hypomanic elation, hyperactivity and hyper imagination, and a depressive phase of inhibition, slowness to conceive ideas and move, and anxiety or sadness. Together these form what is commonly known as manic depression Manic depression with its two principal sub-types, bipolar disorder and major depression, was first clinically described near the end of the 19th century by psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin , who published his account of the disease in his Textbook of Psychiatry . As described below, there are several forms of bipolar disorder. It should be noted that this disease does not consist of mere "ups and downs". Ups and downs are experienced by virtually everyone and do not constitute a disease. The mood swings of bipolar disorder are far more extreme than those experienced by most people. Note: Bipolar disorder is also commonly called "manic depression" by laymen (and by some psychiatrists in the twentieth century), although this usage is now unpopular with psychiatrists, who have standardised on Kraepelin's usage of the term

Bipolar disorder manifests itself differently in children than in adults, and in children there is an overlap of symptoms with other childhood psychiatric disorders.

What is Bipolar Illness?
Table Of Contents The bipolar disorders are mood disorders. That means that amongst other things, there is a major change in mood. In bipolar disorders, this change in mood can be down, as in depression, or the opposite, mania. That is, a person can be inappropriately up. Some types of bipolar disorder have a lot of depression and only a little mania. Others have half and half. Still others seem to be both manic and depressed at the same time. Some people with bipolar disorders only have a few cycles of depression and mania. Others have many cycles a year. When bipolar illness is present in children and adolescents, it is more severe and harder to treat than when it occurs in adults. Pediatric Bipolar illness is one of the most severe conditions in pediatrics. In the milder forms, it can be disabling. In the severe forms, it can be lethal. The prognosis cancers in pediatrics is better than many forms of bipolar illness. All bipolar disorders are a combination of mania with or without depression. So what is mania? Here are the official criteria:

Aromatherapy Bipolar disorder (also known as "bipolar illness" or "manic-depressive illness") is a treatable neurobiological brain disorder characterized by severe fluctuations in mood and activity level. It is believed to occur in at least 1-2 percent of the adolescent and adult population, with bipolar spectrum disorders (such as mild cycling and recurrent depression) believed to occur in 5-7 percent. It can occur at any time of life from early childhood onward. www.bpkids.org ), as many as one million or more children under 18 in the U.S. may have bipolar disorder (mostly undiagnosed and untreated). Children with bipolar disorder are at risk for school failure, substance abuse, and suicide. Children as young as 3 may talk of wanting to "make myself dead." Mania (the activated state) may include insomnia, hyperactivity, daredevil acts, elation and grandiose thinking. Racing thoughts, separation anxiety and intense temper tantrums (also called "rages" or "affective storms") can occur during depression or mania. Sometimes symptoms of both states occur together in mixed states (depressed mood with high energy) or in quick succession within a single day (called rapid cycling).

Child and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder:
A Review of the Past 10 Years
Barbara Geller, M.D. and Joan Luby, M.D. J Am Acad Child Adoles Psychiatry 36:1168-1176, 1997 Abstract Objective: To provide a review of the epidemiology, phenomenology, natural course, comorbidity, neurobiology, and treatment of child and adolescent bipolar disorder (BP) for the past 10 years. This review is provided to prepare applicants for recertification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Method: Literature from Medline and other searches for the past 10 years, earlier relevant articles, and the authors' experience and ongoing National Institute of Mental Health-funded project "Phenomenology and Course of Pediatric Bipolarity" were used. Results: Age-specific, developmental (child, adolescent, and adult) DSM-IV criteria manifestations; comorbidity and differential diagnoses; and episode and course features are provided. Included are age-specific examples of childhood grandiosity, hypersexuality, and delusions. Differential diagnoses (e.g. specific language disorders, sexual abuse, conduct disorder [CD], schizophrenia, substance abuse), suicidality, and BP-II are discussed. Conclusion: Available data strongly suggest that prepubertal onset BP is a nonepisodic, chronic, rapid cycling, mixed manic state that may be comorbid with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and CD or have features of ADHD and/or CD as initial manifestations. Systematic research on pediatric BP is in its infancy and will require ongoing and future studies to provide developmentally relevant diagnostic methods and treatment.
