THE MOOD DISORDER QUESTIONNAIRE This questionnaire was developed to help you recognize the signs of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a complicated illness and no single questionnaire or test can be used to accurately diagnose this illness. Accurate diagnosis is obtained only through a thorough evaluation with a physician. This questionnaire is a good first step in discovering if you might have this illness but it is not meant to take the place of an evaluation by a physician or a mental health professional.
A positive result from this questionnaire suggests that you could benefit from a comprehensive mental health screening. However, regardless of the results of this survey, if you have concerns, contact your physician and/or a mental health professional.
DBSA does not endorse or recommend the use of any specific treatment plan or medication. For advice about specific treatments or medications, you should consult your physician and/or a mental health professional.
This questionnaire has been developed with an unrestricted educational grant from Abbott Laboratories.

Child and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder
Can children and adolescents get bipolar disorder? Bipolar disorder can occur in children and adolescents and has been investigated by federally funded teams in children as young as age 6. How common is it in children and adolescents? Although once thought rare, caseloads of patients examined for federally funded studies have shown that approximately 7% of children seen at psychiatric facilities fit bipolar disorder using research standards. What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents? One of the biggest challenges has been to differentiate children with mania from those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Both groups of children present with irritability, hyperactivity and distractibility. So these symptoms are not useful for the diagnosis of mania because they also occur in ADHD. But, elated mood, grandiose behaviors, flight of ideas, decreased need for sleep and hypersexuality occur primarily in mania and are uncommon in ADHD. Below is a brief description of how to recognize these mania-specific symptoms in children. Elated children may laugh hysterically and act infectiously happy without any reason at home, school or in church. If someone who did not know them saw their behaviors, they would think the child was on his/her way to Disneyland. Parents and teachers often see this as "Jim Carey-like" behaviors.

What is bipolar disorder? Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, is a serious brain disorder that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, and functioning. It affects 2.3 million adult Americans, which is about1.2 percent of the population, and can run in families. The disorder affects men and women equally. Bipolar disorder is characterized by episodes of mania and depression that can last from days to months. Bipolar disorder is a chronic and generally life-long condition with recurring episodes that often begin in adolescence or early adulthood, and occasionally even in children. It generally requires lifelong treatment, and recovery between episodes is often poor. Generally, those who suffer from bipolar disorder have symptoms of both mania and depression (sometimes at the same time). What are the symptoms of mania? Mania is the word that describes the activated phase of bipolar disorder. The symptoms of mania may include:
  • either an elated, happy mood or an irritable, angry, unpleasant mood

A patient information handout on bipolar disorder, written by the authors of this article, is provided on page 1357. This article exemplifies the AAFP 2000 Annual Clinical Focus on mental health. Bipolar disorder most commonly is diagnosed in persons between 18 and 24 years of age. The clinical presentations of this disorder are broad and include mania, hypomania and psychosis. Frequently associated comorbid conditions include substance abuse and anxiety disorders. Patients with acute mania must be evaluated urgently. Effective mood stabilizers include lithium, valproic acid and carbamazepine. A comprehensive management program, including collaboration between the patient's family physician and psychiatrist, should be implemented to optimize medical care. (Am Fam Physician 2000;62:1343-53, 1357-8.) B ipolar disorder is characterized by variations in mood, from elation and/or irritability to depression. This disorder can cause major disruptions in family, social and occupational life. Bipolar I disorder is defined as episodes of full mania alternating with episodes of major depression. Patients with mania often exhibit disregard for danger and engage in high-risk behaviors such as promiscuous sexual activity, increased spending, violence, substance abuse and driving while intoxicated.

Bipolar disorder is often difficult to recognize and diagnose. It causes a person to have a high level of energy, grandiose thoughts or ideas, and impulsive or reckless behavior. These symptoms may feel good to a person, which may lead to denial that there is a problem. Another reason bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose is that its symptoms may appear to be part of another illness or attributed to other problems, such as substance abuse, poor school performance, or trouble in the workplace. Bipolar Disorder Bipolar Public Service Campaign What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is an illness involving one or more episodes of serious mania and depression. The illness causes a person’s mood to swing from excessively “high” and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, with periods of a normal mood in between. More than 2 million Americans suffer from bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life. It is often not recognized as an illness and people who have it may suffer needlessly for years. Bipolar disorder can be extremely distressing and disruptive for those who have this disease, their spouses, family members, friends and employers. Although there is no known cure, bipolar disorder is treatable, and recovery is possible. Individuals with bipolar disorder have successful relationships and meaningful jobs. The combination of medications and psychotherapy helps the vast majority of people return to productive, fulfilling lives.

What is bipolar disorder? Once properly diagnosed and treated, people with BD can lead productive lives. Symptoms of bipolar disorder?
http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/bipolar.html
Bipolar Disorder "It seems as though my mind has slowed down and burned out to the point of being virtually useless. I [am] haunt[ed] with the total, the desperate hopelessness of it all." "Ideas are fast...all shyness disappears...people, things become intensely interesting...unbelievable feelings of ease, power, well-being...you can do anything." "The fast ideas become too fast and there are far too many...overwhelming confusion replaces clarity...everything is now against the grain...you are irritable, angry, uncontrollable, and trapped."
What is Bipolar Disorder?
These quotations describe bipolar disorder (BD), an illness characterized by extreme changes in mood, behavior and energy levels. Also called manic-depressive illness, BD affects approximately 1.2% of the population . Men and women are equally likely to develop BD. The disorder does tend to run in families and the rate of BD in identical twins is higher than that in fraternal (non-identical twins). Nevertheless, the specific genetic defect has not yet been identified and it is likely that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to BD. The first bipolar episode often occurs in adolescence or early adulthood and may be triggered by a traumatic event such as the death of a family member. In between episodes, many people are symptom-free, while others are never free of symptoms. Once properly diagnosed and treated, people with BD can lead productive lives.

59. Stanford Bipolar Disorders Clinic: What Is Bipolar Disorder?
Also known as manic depressive illness, bipolar disorder is characterized by severe and disabling highs (mania) and lows (depression).
http://www.stanford.edu/group/bipolar.clinic/what_is/
Also known as manic depressive illness, bipolar disorder is characterized by severe and disabling highs (mania) and lows (depression). Affecting 2.2 million Americans, this illness typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life, with 80% of patients experiencing multiple manic episodes and 15% ending their lives in suicide. However, effective medical treatments are available, and new research is constantly expanding the range of possible treatment options. With proper medication, most people with bipolar disorders are able to lead normal, productive lives. Bipolar Disorder is distinguished from Major Depressive Disorder by the presence of manic or hypomanic episodes. It is distinguished from Schizoaffective Disorder by the absence of psychotic symtoms (such as delusions, halucinations) during periods of stable mood. Bipolar Disorder is really a spectrum of disorders. Bipolar I disorder is characterized by a history of at least one manic episode, and (usually) depressive episodes. Bipolar II disorder is characterized by hypomanic episodes alternating with depressive episodes. Cyclothymia is characterized by highs which fulfil some but not all criteria for hypomania and lows which fulfil some but not all criteria for depression.

    http://home.att.net/~mercurial-mind/
What does bipolar disorder feel like? How does manic depression affect the lives of people who have it, and those who care about them? How do mental health professionals determine whether or not you have bipolar disorder? Finally, the answers to these questions and more, in plain language. Studies say that 1% of the world's population has bipolar disorder. That leaves the other 99% wondering why the heck we're so moody, angry, sad, explosive, tearful, etc. We are a mystery to the majority of people on this planet. This situation can leave the bipolar person feeling very lonely and alienated, and the people in their lives confused, hurt, and angry. I hope that this site will help a few people reach better understanding of themselves or someone they care about.
    I GO TO EXTREMES

    Billy Joel
    Introduction
I'm a forty-something woman who has been diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder, Type One. My depressions are profoundly deep, and I have moderately severe manic attacks. I was initially diagnosed when I was 35, and at the age of 39, I was declared disabled by this condition. Although bipolar disorder can be successfully treated with medications, I've never had much success maintaining a middle ground. Most of the time, I'm either manic, depressed, or both simultaneously. I am also a "rapid cycler," meaning that I can bounce from a depressed state to a manic one and back several times within a year. There are all kinds of resources on the internet which are available to tell you, from a medical perspective, what bipolar disorder is. I'm not going to try to re-invent the wheel - I'll leave the medical stuff to the professionals. My goal in writing this page is to share how this illness affects me as an individual. How does it feel? What impact does it have on my relationships and other aspects of my life? If even one fellow sufferer comes away from these pages feeling a little less alone, I'll have accomplished something meaningful. Please keep in mind that these are strictly my personal experiences, observations and feelings. Others with bipolar disorder may have very different experiences with their illness.
