Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. Bipolar Disorder
There is a tendency to romanticize bipolar disorder. Many artists, musicians, and writers have suffered from its mood swings. But in truth, many lives are ruined by this disease; and without effective treatment, the illness is associated with an increased risk of suicide. Bipolar disorder , also known as manic-depressive illness, is a serious brain disease that causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, and functioning. It affects approximately 2.3 million adult Americans—about 1.2 percent of the population. Men and women are equally likely to develop this disabling illness. The disorder typically emerges in adolescence or early adulthood, but in some cases appears in

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depression, affects at least 2 million Americans at any given time. The disorder is characterized by alternating periods of extreme moods. A person with Bipolar disorder experiences cycling of moods that usually swing from being overly elated or irritable (mania) to sad and hopeless (depression) and then back again, with periods of normal mood in between. For those who have this disorder, it can be extremely distressing and disruptive. The frequency of the swings between these two states, and the duration of the mood, varies from person to person. Bipolar disorder typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life. It is often not recognized at first as a serious disorder, and people who have it may suffer needlessly for years or even decades. This disorder is not a character flaw, and it is not your fault. It is a serious mood disorder that affects a person's ability to function in every day activities. It affects one's work, one's family, and one's social life.

    Psychosocial Treatments in Bipolar Disorder
by Nancy A. Huxley, Ph.D., and Ross J. Baldessarini, M.D. Bipolar disorder is a common and often disabling major mental illness. It accounts for a high proportion of idiopathic psychotic illnesses, and, together with psychotic disorders, the combined lifetime prevalence may exceed 3% of the general population. Their treatment has been revolutionized by modern pharmacotherapies in the past half-century (Baldessarini and Tarazi, in press). However, these treatments have strongly encouraged contemporary psychiatry to explain these complex disorders biologically and to treat them with maximum apparent cost efficiency (Baldessarini, 2000). An associated trend is to undervalue and under-utilize psychosocial interventions in the treatment and prevention of these disorders, despite growing evidence that such methods can significantly augment the effects of pharmacotherapy alone (Huxley et al., 2000a, 2000b, in press).

    Welcome
Welcome to Cambridge Manic Depression Fellowship Self Help Group. We are one of over 100 local groups coming under the umbrella of the national charity, The Manic Depression Fellowship.
Our aim is to support people affected by manic depression (also known as bipolar affective disorder). That includes people with the diagnosis and their family and friends. All are equally welcome to join.
The group is run entirely by people affected in one way or another by manic depression. Our main strength is that only other people with MD really know what it is like to go through. Likewise, only a fellow carer appreciates the issues of looking after someone with this complex condition. You will find a wealth of knowledge and understanding as well as a place you can speak openly about your experiences. Follow the links to find out more about us.
