Women experience various kinds of breast lumps and other breast changes. These changes include those that normally occur during the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and with aging, as well as several types of breast lumps and other changes. Most breast lumps and other changes are not cancer. Among breast conditions for which biopsies are often done, the results show that some 80 percent are not cancer. But only a doctor can tell for sure whether a condition is malignant (cancer) or benign (not cancer).
Each breast has 15 to 20 sections, called lobes, each with many smaller lobules. The lobules end in dozens of tiny bulbs that can produce milk. The lobes, lobules, and bulbs are all linked by thin tubes called ducts. These ducts lead to the nipple in the center of the dark area of skin called the areola. Fat fills the spaces between lobules and ducts. There are no muscles in the breasts, but muscles lie under each breast and cover the ribs. These normal structures inside the breasts can sometimes make them feel lumpy. Such lumpiness may be especially noticeable in women who are thin or who have small breasts.

Breast lumps
Published by BUPA's Health Information Team
December, 2002 Download this factsheet Breast lumps are very common and most women will experience one or more at some time in their lives. However, the vast majority (at least nine out of ten) are benign, i.e. not cancerous. Benign lumps can be caused by cysts (sacs of fluid which build up in the breast tissue) or fibroadenomas (solid growths made up of fibrous and glandular tissue).
What to look for
Even though most lumps are not cancerous, if you find a lump in your breast, or notice any of the following changes, you should arrange to see your GP as soon as possible:
  • change in size or shape of your breasts (after puberty is complete), dimpling of the skin (skin looks like texture of orange peel)

If you find a lump in your breast, don't delay; see your doctor as soon as possible. Anything you notice that's different from your normal breast tissue should be investigated. The good news is that about 80 percent of breast lumps turn out to be benign tumors or cysts. How can my doctor tell whether a lump is cancerous? If a breast exam, mammogram , or follow-up ultrasound turns up a suspicious mass in your breast, you may want to have a biopsy a procedure in which a doctor takes a small tissue sample from the lump and a pathologist looks at it under a microscope. That's the only way to tell with more certainty whether a lump is cancerous. An excisional biopsy (removing the whole lump) should be definitive, but a needle or core biopsy (in which fluid or tissue are extracted) may not be 100 percent accurate. Afterwards, even if the biopsy is negative, the lump should be followed - and removed if it grows or changes. If it's not cancer, what could it be?

Benign Breast Conditions Format for Printing A benign breast condition is any non-cancerous breast abnormality. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast tissue is examined under a microscope some type of abnormality is common in nine out of every ten women. Though not life-threatening, benign conditions may cause pain or discomfort for some patients. Some (not all) benign conditions can signal an increased risk for breast cancer. The most common benign breast conditions include fibrocystic breast condition , benign breast tumors, and breast inflammation. Depending on the type of benign breast condition and the patient's medical situation, treatment may or may not be necessary. Main menu: Overview: Breast Tissue Changes The breast is composed of two main types of tissues: glandular tissues and stromal (supporting) tissues. The glandular tissues house the milk-producing lobules and the ducts (the milk passages). The stromal tissues include fatty and fibrous connective tissue. Any changes in the glandular or stromal areas may cause symptoms of benign breast conditions. Some women experience changes to their breast tissue over their lifetime. These changes can include an increase in the number of breast cells (hyperplasia) or the emergence of atypical breast cells (atypical hyperplasia). In some instances, a portion of breast tissue that exhibits abnormal characteristics can eventually develop into a cancerous tumor. That is why physicians carefully monitor patients with abnormal breast cells, to ensure that if cancer develops at a later date, it is detected and treated early. Some patients with atypical hyperplasia may also be recommended to take the drug

Outpatient Procedure Shrinks Benign Breast Lumps
Breast cryotherapy is a safe, effective and nearly painless office-based procedure that significantly reduces benign breast lumps without damaging breast structure, according to a study presented today at the 89th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Cryotherapy for breast fibroadenomas, or fibrous benign lumps, is an ultrasound-guided procedure that uses exceptionally cold temperatures to freeze and kill abnormal tissue. Interventional radiologists numb the breast tissue around the mass and insert a cryoprobe, which is similar to a large needle, into the middle of the lesion. An ice ball forms at the tip of the probe and continues to grow until the ultrasound confirms that the entire lump has been engulfed, killing the tissue. There are three major advantages of cryotherapy for breast fibroadenomas. The first benefit is visualization. Ice is easily visualized with both ultrasound and CT, making the procedure safe and effective. Second, cryotherapy is virtually painless when the area around the tumor is numbed with a local anesthetic. The third benefit is the improved cosmetic outcome since cryotherapy preserves the breast's supporting tissue and does not leave significant surgical scars. The researchers treated 42 fibroadenomas in 27 patients with ultrasound-guided cryotherapy to evaluate outcomes and patient acceptance of cryotherapy for breast fibroadenomas originally planned for surgical removal. On average, the fibroadenomas were reduced in size by 73 percent. No significant complications were noted, and patients were pleased with the cosmetic results.
