Study Finds Autoimmune Link In Juvenile Batten Disease
For years, researchers have tried to determine how the defective gene in juvenile Batten disease leads to the seizures, mental impairment, and other symptoms of this devastating childhood disorder. A new study shows that mice lacking the gene that is altered, or mutated, in this disorder have an immune reaction that disables an important enzyme in the brain. The study also found signs of this reaction in children with Batten disease. The finding provides a new clue about how Batten disease may damage the nervous system and could lead to treatments for the disorder.

The immune attack inactivates an enzyme called glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) that normally converts one neurotransmitter called glutamate into another, called gamma-aminobutyric acid or GABA. The loss of the enzyme's activity leads to an excess of glutamate in the brain.

We founded the Nathan's Battle Foundation to aid in the development of therapies for this deadly disease. Through the foundations efforts we found a potential cure. In 2000, we initiated a formal project with Cornell University's Weill Medical College to develop this life saving treatment and initiate a clinical trial. On March 12, 2001, complete devastation overcomes the Milto family when test results from their youngest son, P.J., comeback positive for Late Infantile Batten disease. The Milto family is attempting to deal with the unbearable diagnosis of their youngest son. Nathan's Battle now becomes a WAR!!! We MUST win both the battle and the war. Two of our three children have this dreadful fatal disease.

http://www.seeability.org/randd/jbparents.htm
Home Donations Places Available Stop Press ... can help Introduction The biochemical makeup of each human being is unique, and every person has, in a specific way, an inborn tendency to develop certain diseases. Metabolic diseases are potentially fatal, inherited genetic disorders where metabolic errors occur due to absent or malfunctioning catalysts or enzymes which cause chemical imbalances. These imbalances are often untreatable and fatal. Batten's Disease is one of the 1300 groups of metabolic diseases that have been identified so far. There are four main forms of Batten's Disease, which are:
  • Infantile - starts at 6 months to 2 years. Late Infantile - starts at 2 to 4 years. Juvenile - starts at 5 to 9 years. Adult - normally starts before the age of 40.
In addition to this various other forms of the disease have been identified including 15 atypical subtypes of the disease. Juvenile Batten's Disease Juvenile Batten's Disease (also known as Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid-Lipofuscinosis) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder of childhood. First described by Neurologist Frederick Batten in 1903, it has been estimated to have an incidence of between 1 in 12,500 and 1 in 25,000 births, although these figures are approximate. Juvenile Batten's Disease is an autosomal recessive disease. This means that the faulty gene must be inherited from both parents in order for the child to be infected. If both parents are carriers then there is a 1 in 4 chance that each child they have will be infected with Batten's Disease.

Different types are described in different countries. The deficiency is an abnormal accumulation of autofluorescent ceroid-lipofuscin pigment in the brain. It has autosomal recessive inheritance. Radiologically, there is progressive development of brain atrophy and on MR imaging there is hyperintensity of the periventricular white matter around the lateral ventricles.

Charly Daniels, the 10-year-old sister of Batten's disease victim Rhys Daniels, has died after losing her fight against the same condition. Her death came within weeks of her brother's. He died from the rare genetic disease three days before Christmas last year. Charly Daniels: Always looked content
Batten's disease is a progressive disorder which causes blindness, deafness and loss of muscle control. It is usually fatal by the age of 10. It is understood that Charly's funeral will be on Friday, the day before her parents are due to host a charity Valentine's Ball at the Hilton Hotel in London. A number of celebrities - including Pauline Quirke and Samantha Janus - who support the Rhys Daniels Trust are expected to attend. Double tragedy The children's parents, Barry and Carmen Daniels, have campaigned tirelessly to help other sufferers of Batten's disease. They also have a healthy three-year-old daughter called Bliss.

An Overview
Contents Foreword This report has been designed to give a basic overview of Juvenile Batten's Disease, what it is, how it is passed on, how it is diagnosed, the symptoms that develop and current research in the area. SeeABILITY is currently involved in the development of a residential unit and day services provision for young people with this disease at Tadley in Hampshire. We are also hoping to set up a database and information network on Juvenile Batten's Disease. The information contained in this report can be used as a factual basis for any information that we may be asked to provide on Juvenile Batten's Disease within the course of this project. Introduction top Neuronal Ceroid-Lipofuscinoses The group of diseases known as neuronal ceroid-lipofuseinoses are metabolic progressive degenerative diseases that occur in children and adults. They have been recognised in the juvenile form for approximately 90 years. The various childhood forms of the disease are inherited as autosomal recessive and represent one of the largest groups of progressive neurodegenerative diseases in children (Goebel 1995). It has been suggested that the ceroid-lipofuscinoses are the most common group of progressive neurodegenerative disorders of childhood in Western countries (Jarvela et al 1996)
