catalog of human genes and disorders 5-ALPHA REDUCTASE is an enzyme that was first discovered in the male prostate. Here, it catalyzes the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, which in turn binds to the androgen receptor and initiates development of the external genitalia and prostate. The gene for 5-alpha reductase has been mapped to chromosome 5. More recently, 5-alpha reductase was found in human scalp and elsewhere in the skin, where it carries out the same reaction as in the prostate. It is thought that disturbances in 5-alpha reductase activity in skin cells might contribute to male pattern baldness, acne or hirsutism. The discovery of a plant homolog of human 5-alpha reductase may lead to new drugs, and the race is now on to find inhibitors of 5-alpha reductase.

There's no doubt the market for baldness cures exists. Elton John, who underwent hair transplant surgery, shows how far some men will go to disguise hair loss. But is there really any way to combat a loss of hair? And is it something men should even be bothered about?
Hair loss can cause distress, but it's a natural process.
However, this growth slows down as we age, and may lead to thinning and eventually baldness. Male pattern baldness, which is hereditary, usually occurs in middle-aged men but can also affect men in their late teens.
Hair-raising treatments
Despite the variety of products on offer, according to Marilyn Sherlock, chairman of the Institute of Trichologists, only two treatments have been shown to be of some use.

http://alegent.iqhealth.com/atoz/centers/menshealth/mensbald.htm
What is it? The medical term for hair loss is alopecia . Many causes of hair loss are rare and related to unusual diseases or high risk treatments for life-threatening conditions like cancer. This article concerns itself only with male pattern baldness , that very common progressive loss of scalp hair from the top and the front that accompanies aging in a third of all men and very few women. How bad is it? You may be at greater risk for heart problems if you’re going bald on the top of your head, according to a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The study of 22,000 male doctors, conducted at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital by a team of doctors from Boston, found men with severe hair loss on the crown of the head had a 36 percent greater risk for heart attacks and bypass surgery compared to men with no hair loss. The risk is not as high for men with a receding hairline. What makes men go bald – elevated levels of male hormones – may also make them more prone to hypertension and high cholesterol, according to the study. Like the rest of your body, your bald spot should be protected from prolonged exposure to sunlight to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Researchers believe the molecule could help treat baldness Scientists have claimed that eating soy could help prevent men from developing prostate cancer and from going bald.
US researchers found a molecule produced in the intestine when soy is digested stops a hormone which can fuel prostate growth or cause baldness. Writing in the journal Biology of Reproduction, they said the finding could explain why Japanese men, who eat more soya, rarely have prostate cancer. They said the molecule could be used as a treatment for cancer and baldness. These findings are of immense clinical importance
Dr Kenneth Setchell, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center The team found that the molecule, equol, "handcuffs" the male hormone DHT - a by-product of testosterone. The researchers say this could be particularly important for men who have been diagnosed with either an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), or cancer of the prostate. DHT has also been implicated in research into the causes of male pattern baldness.

The discovery could lead to new treatments for baldness Scientists believe they may have found a new way to reverse baldness and treat conditions like alopecia.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have identified stem cells or master cells in the hair follicles of mice. They found that these cells grow into hair follicles and produce hair when transplanted into skin. Writing in Nature Biotechnology, they said the discovery could lead to new treatments for humans. Key genes The researchers found certain genes were activated in the stem cells that were not activated in other hair follicle or skin cells. They are now planning further research to identify these genes in humans. These findings provide potential targets for the treatment of hair loss
Researchers,
University of Pennsylvania They said developing drugs to affect these genes could lead to new ways of controlling hair growth. "By defining these molecular markers, we will be able to isolate human stem cells from hair follicles," Dr George Cotsarelis, one of those involved in the study, told Reuters.

But there's some bad news: The same study seems to show that if a man taking finasteride does get the disease, the drug appears to increase his chance of getting a more aggressive form. "Finasteride is the first drug found to reduce the risk of prostate cancer," said Dr. Ian Thompson of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the study's lead author. "The drug worked for men at low risk for prostate cancer, as well as those at high risk." The National Cancer Institute estimates that if 1,000 63-year-old men are tracked, after seven years, 60 of them would develop prostate cancer, with 18 of those men suffering with high-grade tumors, which spread quickly.

Baldness
Question: Could someone please tell me something about the inheritance of baldness, i.e. is it really an X-linked trait? Thanks. Bruce Evans Answer: Yes, the most typical baldness - "male pattern baldness" is indeed an X-linked trait. If a woman gets two copies of X chromosomes that both carry this trait, she too might show signs of premature baldness. Steve J Triezenberg

39. FDA Set To Green Light Propecia?
Article says FDA panel gives first green light towards approval of Propecia, the first antibaldness pill.
http://www.hairtoday.com//nov/html/fda.htm
HOME FDA panel gives first green light towards approval of Propecia, the first anti-baldness pill
Nov 14, 1997-A Food and Drug Administration committee met Thursday and gave an initial thumbs up to Propecia, Merck's anti-baldness drug, while raising questions about its long-term side effects. The committee was considering the one-a-day pill known as Propecia, to determine whether it is both safe and effective. Advisers told the FDA that Propecia appears to help some men grow new hair. The panel, without a vote, concluded that the pill was effective and left the safety question to the government. Now it is up to the FDA to decide whether to require Merck to extend the study of the drug or allow its sale and keep tabs on what happens to balding men over time. If approved, it could be available by the end of the year. Merck's Propecia is a once-a-day pill that promises to help regrow hair and prevent more from falling out by suppressing a hormone that shrinks hair follicles.
