US researchers found a molecule produced in the intestine when soy is digested stops a hormone which can fuel prostate growth or cause baldness. Writing in the journal Biology of Reproduction, they said the finding could explain why Japanese men, who eat more soya, rarely have prostate cancer. They said the molecule could be used as a treatment for cancer and baldness. These findings are of immense clinical importance Dr Kenneth Setchell, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center The team found that the molecule, equol, "handcuffs" the male hormone DHT - a by-product of testosterone. They found that these cells grow into hair follicles and produce hair when transplanted into skin. Writing in Nature Biotechnology, they said the discovery could lead to new treatments for humans. Key genes The researchers found certain genes were activated in the stem cells that were not activated in other hair follicle or skin cells. They are now planning further research to identify these genes in humans. HOME FDA panel gives first green light towards approval of Propecia, the first anti-baldness pill Nov 14, 1997-A Food and Drug Administration committee met Thursday and gave an initial thumbs up to Propecia, Merck's anti-baldness drug, while raising questions about its long-term side effects. The committee was considering the one-a-day pill known as Propecia, to determine whether it is both safe and effective. Advisers told the FDA that Propecia appears to help some men grow new hair. The panel, without a vote, concluded that the pill was effective and left the safety question to the government. Now it is up to the FDA to decide whether to require Merck to extend the study of the drug or allow its sale and keep tabs on what happens to balding men over time. If approved, it could be available by the end of the year. Merck's Propecia is a once-a-day pill that promises to help regrow hair and prevent more from falling out by suppressing a hormone that shrinks hair follicles.
