History
Anatomy
The hair itself, or the shaft, is composed of keratin, and is essentially a collection of dead cells which are the product of the hair follicle. The hair follicle describes an invagination of the epidermis into the underlying dermis. The proximal end of the follicle has an onion-shaped dilatation called the bulb, which is hollow at its base and envelopes the dermal papilla. The follicle has two layers, the dermal layer (fibrous tissue) and the epidermal layer. Into each follicle, the arrectores pilorum muscle inserts at the dermal layer below the entrance of the sebaceous gland duct. The arrectore pilorus acts to elevate the hair shaft and express sebum.

Color Dilution Alopecia
By Teri Dickinson, DVM
Alopecia (hair loss) related to dilute coat color is a recognized condition in dogs. The currently accepted medical terminology for this condition is Color Dilution Alopecia (CDA). The condition may affect any dilutely pigmented dog, regardless of coat color . This condition was previously known as Blue Balding Syndrome, Blue Doberman Syndrome, Color Mutant Alopecia, Congenital Alopecia, etc. The term Color Mutant Alopecia arose because dilutes were at one time mutations from the deep pigment occurring in wild canines. Dilutes are now a regularly occurring form of pigmentation in many breeds and have been for hundreds of years. The term mutation is therefore not applicable to dilute individuals. References to Doberman Pinschers or blue hair coats arose because the condition is common in blue individuals of this breed, but it is not limited to either blue dogs or Dobermans. The term congenital means present at birth, but CDA affected dogs are born with normal hair coats.
The dilute (also known as Maltese) gene also appears in both mice and cats, and interestingly enough, is not associated with any abnormal coat conditions in those species.

Male pattern baldness Hair follicle Alternative names Return to top Alopecia in men; Baldness - male; Hair loss in men Definition Return to top Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. It usually follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown, and is caused by hormones and genetic predisposition. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Hair grows about an inch every couple of months. Each hair grows for 2 to 6 years, remains at that length for a short period, then falls out. A new hair soon begins growing in its place. At any one time, about 85% of the hair on your head is in the growing phase and 15% is not. Each hair sits in a cavity in the skin called a follicle. Baldness in men occurs when the follicle shrinks over time, resulting in shorter and finer hair. The end result is a very small follicle with no hair inside. Ordinarily, hair should grow back. However, in men who are balding, the follicle fails to grow a new hair. Why this occurs is not well understood, but it is related to your genes and male sex hormones. Even though the follicles are small, they remain alive, suggesting the possibility of new growth. Symptoms Return to top The typical pattern of male baldness begins at the hairline. The hairline gradually recedes to form an "M" shape. The existing hair may become finer and shorter. The hair at the crown also begins to thin. Eventually the top of the hairline meets the thinned crown, leaving a horseshoe pattern of hair around the sides of the head.

Take 10 years off your appearance, regain your confidence in seconds! Featured Products Top Sellers Healthy, lustrous hair has long been a symbol of youth and beauty. As a result, many people cringe at the first signs of hair thinning or baldness. If your hair seems to be thinning, take comfort in the fact that it's normal to lose between 50 and 100 strands a day. Like your nails and skin, your hair goes through a cycle of growth and rest. Gradual thinning occurs as a normal part of the aging process. Common baldness accounts for 99 percent of hair loss in both men and women and is genetic. Male-pattern baldness usually begins with thinning at your hairline, followed by moderate to extensive hair loss on the crown of your head. Bald patches rarely develop in women with common baldness. Instead, their hair becomes thinner all over the head. Heredity, hormones and age all play important roles in common baldness, so the best way to know what you will look like later in life is to look at your parents' families. Gradual hair loss also can occur any time your hair's delicate growth cycle is upset. Diet, medications, hormones, pregnancy, improper hair care, poor nutrition, underlying diseases and other factors can cause too many follicles to rest at once, producing bald patches or diffuse thinning.

Hello, my name is David Katz, and perhaps like yourself, I have been through the hair loss industry jungle. I have searched through countless web pages for companies advertising the cure-all for hair loss, purchasing their products, and left with poor results and less money than I had before. A few months ago I decided that I had had enough, and started to do some major research on hair loss. What I did was study the reasons for hair loss and baldness in men and women, and convinced friends and family members with hair loss problems to purchase different products. All of my findings are organized in an easy to read format throughout this page. Here is what you will find on this site:

baldness baldness, thinning or loss of hair as a result of illness, functional disorder, or hereditary disposition; also known as alopecia. Male pattern baldness, a genetic trait, is the most common cause of baldness among white males. It is carried by females, but they are rarely susceptible inasmuch as it develops under the influence of testosterone, a male sex hormone; women, however, may experience an overall thinning of the hair. Hair loss begins at the forehead and crown and is slowly progressive. Male pattern baldness may be cosmetically disguised by hair-follicle transplants. Drug treatments with minoxidil (Rogaine) or finasteride (Propecia) have been used with limited effectiveness. Diseases characterized by high fever (e.g., scarlet and typhoid fevers), malnutrition, chemotherapy, and glandular disorders can all cause balding. Treatment of the disease or dysfunction will usually halt the loss of hair, and if the scalp and hair follicles are not severely damaged, hair will usually regrow spontaneously. Scalp infection, oiliness or dirtiness of the scalp and hair, and excessive teasing and lacquering of hair are also conducive to baldness. Alopecia areata is a disease of unknown origin characterized by noninflamed bald patches in the scalp hair and beard. It is recurrent but is usually of short duration.

NetDoctor's Colin Brennan goes on the trail of a genuine cure for every young man's nightmare.
People have always been surprisingly gullible where their hair is concerned. Such was her vanity, Queen Victoria was driven to drink silver birch wine, made from the rising sap, because she believed it would cure her baldness. Even now in an image conscious age, when the masculine icon of the moment, footballer David Beckham, can voluntarily surrender his trademark dishevelled blond fringe for a shaven head, hair loss is refusing to become fashionable.
A heavy weight political writer went so far as to say that William Hague wouldn't get elected Prime Minister because of his baldness. Neil Kinnock, previously rejected for the post, agreed and he hasn't got much on top either. Jokes aside, consultant dermatologist Dr Andrew Messenger of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, told NetDoctor: 'Although the great majority of men learn to live with it, I think everybody would prefer not to be bald. For a very small number of men, it becomes a big issue.'
