The Truth About Bad Breath
by Dr. Harold Katz, Founder of The California Breath Clinics Bad breath is caused by Anaerobic Sulfur Producing Bacteria which normally live WITHIN the surface of the tongue and in the throat. These bacteria are supposed to be there, because they assist humans in digestion by breaking down proteins found in specific foods, mucous or phlegm, blood, and in diseased or "broken-down" oral tissue. Under certain conditions, these bacteria start to break down proteins at a very high rate. Proteins are made up of Amino Acids. Two of the Amino Acids (Cysteine and Methionine) are dense with sulfur. When these "beneficial" bacteria come into contact with these compounds, the odorous and "lousy-tasting" sulfur compounds are released from the back of the tongue and throat, as Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercaptan, and other odorous and bad tasting compounds. These "problem" compounds are often referred to as volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), where volatile means Vaporous and Effervescent, two adjectives which accurately describe their ability to offend other people instantly. Listings If your dog or cat has bad breath it is likely that there is a dental problem. Tooth decay can indicate trouble for your pet if left untreated. Periodontal disease can lead to more serious liver and kidney problems. Check your pet's teeth regularly for yellowing teeth and red or swollen gums. The earlier your pet receives treatment for dental problems the better. Most dental problems can be treated without much effort, but left untreated infection or tooth loss can occur. Feeding your pet foods and treats that reduce plaque and tartar build up is the first step in preventing problems. Brushing your pet's teeth is also helpful. This brushing process needs to be started gradually. Initially use your finger to apply special pet toothpaste. Do not use toothpaste for humans. Work up to using a soft toothbrush. Finally, make sure your vet checks your pet's teeth during each visits.

Definition
Bad breath, sometimes called halitosis, is an unpleasant odor of the breath.
Description
Bad breath is likely to be experienced by most adults at least occasionally. Bad breath, either real or imagined, can have a significant impact on a person's social and professional life.
Causes and symptoms
Bad breath can be caused by a number of problems. Oral diseases, fermentation of food particles in the mouth, sinus infections, and unclean dentures can all contribute to mouth odor. Many non-oral diseases, such as lung infections, kidney failure, or severe liver disease, can also cause bad breath, though rarely. Many people think that bad breath can originate in the stomach or intestines; this is extremely rare. The esophagus is usually collapsed and closed, and, although a belch may carry odor up from the stomach, the chance of bad breath being caused from air continually escaping from the stomach is remote. Cigarette smoke can cause bad breath, not only in the cigarette smoker, but also in one who is constantly exposed to second-hand smoke.
Diagnosis
The easiest way to determine if one has bad breath is to ask someone who is trustworthy and discrete. This is usually not too difficult. Another, more private, method of determining if one has bad breath is to lick one's wrist, wait until it dries, then smell the area. Scraping the rear area of the tongue with a plastic spoon, then smelling the spoon, is another method one can use to assess bad breath.

Bad Breath In Cats
Just as with dogs, our feline friends get dental and gum disease. And just as with dogs, the mouth is one of the most overlooked parts of the cat's body. So, on this helpline topic, I hope to let you know what causes bad breath in cats, and what you can do about it. First and most commonly is periodontal disease or more specifically gingivitis. This is inflammation of the gum tissues surrounding the teeth. Tartar forms on cats' teeth, very much as it does in our canine friends, and begins to irritate and infect the gums. The gum tissue gets very red, swollen and increasingly susceptible to infections. These infected gums bleed easily and produce bad odors. Cats on soft food diets have more of a problem with this because there is no abrasive action to help knock off some of the tartar, and to help exercise the gums. Cats who eat dry food get some relief, but are not immune. In moderate to severe cases, your veterinarian should tranquilize or anesthesize the cat and perform a dental cleaning. The doctor will also clean and flush the gums as well. Then you can keep this dental hygiene up at home by brushing the teeth a few times per week and try getting the cat to eat at least some dry food. In some severe cases, there are other diseases that cause the bad breath. Eosinophilic granulomas or the so-called "rodent ulcer" may cause a cancerous-like growth to form on the cat's gums. Many viruses have been associated with oral diseases in cats. The Feline Leukemia Virus of FeLV has been diagnosed in many cats with oral disease as a primary complaint. Feline Immunodefiency Virus or FIV is known to produce a very severe gum-line redness and ulceration in almost half of all FIV positive cats. It's so closely associated with FIV that many veterinarians will run the FIV test for cats with chronic gum disease.
