Overcoming Bad Breath
Q:
What are some ways of overcoming bad breath?
A: Bad breath has a variety of causes with an offending odor that may originate from the mouth, nose, sinuses, lungs, or stomach. One of the more common causes is a bacterium on the surface of the tongue. These bacteria may originate in the gums from chronic infection. Flow of saliva and tongue motion are normal forms of defense but these can be affected through illness, sleep, or medications that reduce the flow of saliva. Gums that bleed easily may be the source of odor through decaying blood. Good oral hygiene trough brushing your teeth at least twice daily as well as brushing your tongue are helpful. If your gums bleed easily or have simply not seen a dentist in some time, a visit would be wise. Odors due to cigarette smoking, alcohol, garlic , and onions may originate from the lungs. Moderation in drinking and quitting smoking make great sense for this and other more compelling reasons.

Causes
There are a number of causes of bad breath, foremost among them being bacteria in the mouth, stomach and intestinal disturbances, bowel sluggishness, sinus or throat infections, and tobacco and alcohol use. • Stress is another cause which may not be readily apparent when you are looking for reasons for bad breath. Stress affects the digestive system. An insufficient supply of digestive enzymes may be another cause. • Other sources of bad breath are in the nose and the nasopharynx, the area above the base of your tongue. • Dieting may be a cause of bad breath. • Bad breath may emanate from the back of the throat due to sinus or tonsil infections resulting in excess bacteria. See Sinus Problems in our Ailments section for more information. If you have sinus or throat problems you may well have some form of allergy. See Allergies in our Ailments section for more information. • Bad breath may also be the sign of potentially more serious medical conditions such as diabetes, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux, hypoglycemia, kidney or liver malfunction, and respiratory disorders. • The foods eaten also are a potential cause of halitosis. Certain foods, such as garlic, onions and certain spices are frequently cited as cause for a person's bad breath. Both vegetarians and those who eat large quantities of meat may develop bad breath due, in part, to the digestive process. Digestion begins in the mouth. Saliva has enzymes which begin the digestion process, and the type of food eaten can affect the food chemistry of the mouth. Saliva will also pick up odors from food within several hours after it has been eaten. Odors are strongest from carbohydrates - sugars, starches and cellulose, less strong from proteins, and nonexistent from fats. Bacteria in the mouth react with the decaying food and drink residue and can be the source of the foul odor.

02:00 AM Aug. 20, 2003 PT INVERNESS, Scotland Simple breath tests taken during routine visits to doctors or dentists could one day provide early warning of a whole range of potentially devastating conditions from schizophrenia to diabetes. "My mother-in-law likes to say that no one gets out alive," said Dr. Brian Ross, research director at the pioneering Ness Foundation , located on the banks of Loch Ness near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. "But I would rather stop horrible chronic degenerative diseases before they happen if at all possible."

Bad breath is a surefire way to send potential suitors scrambling for the exits. Chances are, that yummy chicken you enjoyed at lunch is still hanging around in your mouth, which can cause less-than-pleasant-smelling bacteria to form, especially on your tongue. Our bad-breath weapon of choice is a tongue scraper, which some say resembles a medieval torture implement but is actually a disposable U-shaped plastic tool with tiny ridges on one side. It's very easy to use, and it will help clear away any leftover food and odor-causing bacteria that have settled on your tongue. Starting at the back of your mouth, gently drag the scraper along your tongue two or three times, rinsing it in between each pass. Follow up by drinking a glass of water to flush out any other bacteria that have formed in your mouth.

Bad Breath 2
Listen to Karl talk about Bad Breath 2
(You will need Real Audio which you can download for free Last time, I talked about Bad Breath, and how Professor Mel Rosenberg helped turn the study of Bad Breath from a Swamp of Ignorance into a mature, free-standing branch of Science. Thanks to his shoving his nose into the line of fire of thousands of blasts of bad breath, we now know what causes it.
The tonsils are actually part of your immune system. They have tiny little holes on their surface. Occasionally, bacteria live in these holes, and then get killed by your immune system. These conglomerations of dead bacteria and dead immune system cells are usually squirted out of the little holes, and then you swallow and eat them.
But sometimes, instead of being squirted out, they stay and calcify. They get turned into tonsilloliths (meaning "tonsil stones") that are about half the size of a head of a match - and smell quite nasty. They cause no other medical problems, (besides bad breath) and so many doctors and dentists have not heard of them.
There was the curious case of a 28-year-old woman who went to her doctor complaining of persistent bad breath. When he looked up her nose, he found a small bead that she put up there as a young child. When he removed the foreign body, the bad breath vanished - after quarter of a century.

Bad Breath 1
Listen to Karl talk about Bad Breath 1
(You will need Real Audio which you can download for free Most of us know at least one person with bad breath, and have had the embarrassing problem of trying to find an easy way to tell them that their breath stinks. But it's only recently that we have found that bad breath comes from that moist bacterial jungle in your mouth.
Some of these mouth bacteria make truly nasty chemicals, some with disgusting names. There's "putrescine" which gives decaying meat its special fragrance, "cadaverine" which is usually given off by corpses, "skatole" and "methyl mercaptan" which smell like faeces, "isovaleric acid" which smells like sweaty feet, and "hydrogen sulphide" which smells like rotten eggs. The bacteria also emit "indole", which smells lovely at low concentrations and is used sparingly in perfumes, but strangely smells foul in large quantities.
Back in the old days, people wrongly believed that rotten food in your gut gave off bad smells which came up your oesophagus, into your mouth, and inevitably into somebody's face. But thanks to the work of Breath Scientists like Professor Mel Rosenberg, we now know better.
Mel Rosenberg is a Professor of Microbiology at Tel-Aviv University's of School of Dental Medicine. Alice Shirrell Kaswell and Stephen Drew honoured him with their article in the Annals of Improbable Research. They write of his many university and hospital positions around the world. They also quote some of his research papers that "tell the exciting story of how one man helped a tiny field of research blossom, grow, and finally attain recognition as a distinct branch of science" - and remember, we are talking about the Science of Bad Breath.

Bad Breath
Bad breath is a common complaint. Most of the time, bad breath is of oral origin. Bacteria in the back of the tongue release volatile sulfur compounds which cause the bad breath. Bacteria in the dental plaque around teeth and gums, bacteria growing on food debris that collects around dental braces and dentures, and inside cavities also can cause bad breath. Treatment of bad breath of oral origin includes:
  • Dental cleaning by a dentist or hygienist
  • Optimal dental hygiene at home
  • Scraping the back of the tongue (performed by a dentist) to decrease bacteria
  • Using Profresh mouth rinse (containing bacteria-killing, molecular chlorine dioxide)
  • Avoiding agents (such as alcohol) that dry the mouth and aggravate the situation
  • Bad breath also can be caused by medical conditions such as a sinus infection ( sinusitis ), an abscess around the tonsils (peritonsillar abscess), a lung abscess, and esophageal reflux (GERD).

Most kids would go out of their way to avoid eating garlic or onions, yet it is not unusual for a child to wake up with very smelly breath. Throughout the day, a child's saliva, swished around by the mouth muscles, washes away unwanted debris. As soon as a child falls asleep , saliva production plummets, and the muscles relax. Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Body maintenance More on bad breath (Halitosis) Originally Published: May 23, 1997 Dear Alice, Like many people, I often have an embarrassing bad breath. Listerine and other mouthwashes won't be of any help for this chronic problem. There are lots of products available to get rid of "volatile sulfur compounds (VSC)" - that supposedly cause this - and I just don't know which one I should try. Also, what's your opinion on tongue-brushing? Thanks! Evil Breath Dear Evil Breath, Alice is certain everyone has, at one time or another, cupped a hand over her/his mouth to check whether her/his breath is fair or foul. When it comes to social situations, it is not uncommon for many Americans to be consciously aware of the way their breath smells to others. It can be embarrassing to have bad breath, particularly when you are conversing with someone face-to-face. You don't want to turn them off, or be faced with watching them back away, making negative facial expressions, and/or turning up their noses, every time you open your mouth. Seriously, bad breath is a common enough concern that it has helped boost the businesses of manufacturers of over-the-counter breath freshening products. However, you are right to point out that bad breath does not disappear with the use of breath mints, gums, sprays, mouthwashes, and the like because they only temporarily mask bad breath odors. So, instead of popping a mint in your mouth every five minutes, what are the more long-lasting alternatives?

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Body maintenance Bad breath and stomach Originally Published: December 02, 1994 Dear Alice, I often have a bad taste in my mouth, and bad breath as well, I assume. This doesn't stem from poor hygiene: I brush my teeth at least three times a day, and usually more. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about this. Could this be a symptom of some sort of nutritional deficiency? I think my diet is pretty bad, although I'm working pretty hard on getting more protein and eating less fat. I've also been nauseous a lot lately, and vomiting some. Could that be related? Signed, Stinky Breath Dear Stinky Breath, Bad breath can be a result of poor dental hygiene, but also can emanate from problems with your stomach... which is why sometimes bad breath returns shortly after brushing your teeth (i.e., as soon as the toothpaste smell is gone). Vomiting is a defensive reaction by your body to clear the digestive tract. There are a variety of causes, including overindulgence in food or alcohol; as an adverse effect of many drugs (including birth control pills sometimes); disorders of the stomach or intestines that result in inflammation, irritation, or distention of either organ (including peptic ulcers, appendicitis, gastroenteritis, and food poisoning); early pregnancy; or, psychological disgust to a situation or food. There are also many other more serious causes of vomiting, and a physician would ask you specific questions to determine the root cause of your nausea and vomiting.
