Awards for our site AD/HD and Medication: The Basics There has been controversy about the use of medications to treat both children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder There have been articles debating whether Ritalin is over or under prescribed. When people ask me about this, I tell them that I can only answer for the children and adults that I have evaluated or treated. Yes, there probably are some individuals who have received medication when some other treatment might have been better. On the other hand, there are probably others who were not been diagnosed for years and could have benefited from medication. Finally, even if someone has attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and is on medication, is it the best medication, dosage and timing?

Males with eating disorders
The stereotypical anorexic, bulimic, and binge eater is female. The stereotype is misleading.
  • What eating disorders do men and boys get?
Just like girls and women, boys and men get anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Many males describe themselves as compulsive eaters, and they may have binge eating disorder. There is no evidence to suggest that eating disorders in males are atypical or somehow different from the eating disorders experienced by females.
  • How many males have eating disorders?
The numbers seem to be increasing. Twenty years ago it was thought that for every 10-15 women with anorexia or bulimia, there was one man. Today researchers find that for every four females with anorexia, there is one male, and for every 8-11 females with bulimia, there is one male. (American Journal of Psychiatry 2001. 158-570) Binge eating disorder seems to occur almost equally in males and females, although males are not as likely to feel guilty or anxious after a binge as women are sure to do. Clinics and counselors see many more females than males, but that may be because males are reluctant to confess having what has become known as a "teenage girls' problem." Also, health professionals do not expect to see eating disorders in males and may therefore underdiagnose them.

He explains ADHD in a clear and simple style . This book has a wealth on information on every page. No words are redundant and the format is reader friendly. When a child has ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome, I will recommend Martin Kutscher s book as the primary reference for parents and teachers to understand and treat the ADHD aspect ."

Lysosomal Storage Disorders
The lysosomal storage diseases are a group of about 40 different diseases, each characterised by a specific lysosomal enzyme deficiency in a variety of tissues. They occur in total in about 1 in 5,000 live births and display considerable clinical and biochemical heterogeneity. The majority are inherited as autosomal recessive conditions although two ( Hunter disease and Fabry disease ) are X-linked. The SAS laboratory offers a very comprehensive service for these disorders, and also has a major research interest in them. Lysosomal enzymes are normally involved in the intracellular degradation of macromolecules to low molecular weight compounds. Deficiencies of these enzymes result in the accumulation of undegraded macromolecules within the lysosomes, leading to the subsequent pathological features of the disease. Usually there is a specific enzyme deficiency (eg of hexosaminidase A in Tay-Sachs disease ), but there may be a failure of delivery of enzymes to the lysosomes (eg I-cell disease ), defective transport of a small molecule out of lysosomes (eg
