The skeletal trunk that part of the body made up of the spine (back and neck), shoulders, and pelvis acts as the major support system for the rest of the body. Sometimes called the trunk or the torso, the skeletal trunk is home to weight-bearing bones and joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerve centers that make movement possible and allow flexibility for the rest of the body. Because of the complexity of its many tasks, the skeletal trunk is vulnerable to many disorders. Problems such as degenerative arthritis, nerve impingement, fractures, tumors disorders that can also cause pain and disability in other parts of the body are common to the skeletal trunk.

http://swgspine.com/prod03.htm
SOUTHWEST GEORGIA REGIONAL SPINE CENTER DISC DISORDERS OF THE Intervertebral discs are the "cushions" of cartilage between the bony vertebral bodies in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. There existence allows the body to accept and dissipate load across multiple levels in the spine and still allow for the flexibility required for performing normal activities of daily living. As the body twists, bends, flexes and extends; the intervertebral discs are constantly changing their shape. The discs themselves are composed of a tough, outer fibrous layer (the annulus fibrosis) and a soft, almost gelatinous inner layer (the nucleus pulposis). As a part of the aging process, the discs begin to lose their high water content and their ability to dissipate force as efficiently (SO CALLED DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE). By the age of 35, approximately 30% of people will show evidence of disc degeneration at one or more levels. By the age of 60, greater than 90% of people will show evidence of disc degeneration at one or more levels on MRI. In some patients, this disc degeneration can be nearly asymptomatic; in others, disc degeneration can lead to intractable back pain. As the discs deteriorate, the spine can initially become less stable. Bony spurs can develop as a result of this instability and can cause pressure on nearby nerves leading to leg or arm pain. Narrowing of the neural canal by these bony spurs is known as degenerative spinal stenosis. The outer layer of the discs themselves can also tear. When this occurs, the inner, gelatinous layer can herniate out ( A "HERNIATED" OR "RUPTURED" DISC) and also cause pressure on an adjacent nerve. If the herniation occurs in the neck and causes pressure there, this can cause pain that radiates into the shoulder and arm; if it occurs in the back, the pain produced can radiate down into the hip and leg.

WeRMany Wind Beneath Their Wings Supporting the Significant Others of Survivors WeRMany places great importance on the role of significant others (SO's) in the lives of people dealing with MPD/DID. A significant other includes spouses, life partners, friends, children, relatives or anyone who serves as a support person in the life of a multiple. SO's often have a heavy burden placed on them as they give support not only in times of healing, but also in times of crisis and great confusion. Visit WeRMany to continue reading when you click here From our Bookstore The Stranger In The Mirror Most DID cases are the result of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse in childhood. Psychiatrist Steinberg puts her considerable research and clinical experience to the purpose of making it clear that DID is a "hidden epidemic," that many of its sufferers are misdiagnosed and fail to receive proper early treatment, and that the sensationalism of many MPD cases of yore (e.g., The Three Faces of Eve) has warped physicians' as well as public attitudes.

Osteoporosis, Low Back Pain, and Other Bone Disorders

(From the PDR Family Guide to Prescription Drugs
Chapter 4) he human skeleton is an intricate framework of 206 bones that give the body its structure and shape. These bones serve as armor for vital organs and soft tissue, a storehouse for minerals, and a birthplace for blood cells. Together, the bones act in concert with the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissue to give humans an amazing range of movement. Most bone diseases are rare, but a few pose serious health problems. Osteoporosis, for example, is a progressive loss of bone substance that affects about 25 million Americans, mostly postmenopausal caucasian women. Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is widespread among people over 40. (See Chapter 3, "Coping with Arthritis.") Low back pain, which often results from slipped vertebrae or disks, is the second most frequent cause of lost work for adults under 45 years of age.
