About the Author
Table of Contents Words of Praise Get the latest information on evidence-based prevention and rehabilitation approaches from an internationally recognized expert; and learn how to apply the principles in industry, sport, and everyday settings. Low Back Disorders: Evidence-Based Prevention and Rehabilitation provides professionals with the foundation to make the best clinical decisions for building the best prevention and rehabilitation programs. The author's unique research results quantify forces that specific movements and exercises impose on the low back. The text identifies commonly prescribed practices that are, in fact, contraindicated in promoting back health. Additionally, it provides appropriate strategies to offset injuries and restore function. Low Back Disorders will build your understanding of the science behind the practices so that you can use them effectively with clients and patients. The book presents a clear exposition of back anatomy and biomechanics. It also provides the evidence to dispel myths regarding spine stabilization exercise and various prevention approaches. For example, the quantification of stability will show which muscles are important and which exercises groove motor patterns to ensure spine stability. With Low Back Disorders , you will
  • gain valuable information on measured loading of the back during specific activities and apply it to avoid common-but counterproductive-practices in back rehab

WORK-RELATED BACK DISORDERS
STATISTICS INFORMATION SHEET
LAST UPDATED JANUARY 2000
INTRODUCTION Musculoskeletal disorders are by far the most common form of work-related ill-health problem in Great Britain. They can prove costly for the individual, the business and health service providers. This information sheet cites epidemiological evidence regarding the prevalence and economic impact of musculoskeletal disorders of the back. Much of the information for this fact sheet derives from two surveys conducted by HSE in 19902 and 19951. It is strongly recommended that those interested in the data presented below read the two publications from these surveys that will provide further information of relevance and put the data in context. Since the publication of the results from the 1995 survey revisions have been made to the number of working days lost due to illnesses caused by work. An information sheet3 giving detailed information of the revised data can be obtained from HSE's Epidemiology and Medical Statistics Unit. Details of other sources of statistics quoted in this fact sheet can be found in the latest edition of HSE's publication: "Health and Safety Statistics"5.

Back disorders
Summary
  • Results from the latest survey of self-reported work-related illness ( ) indicate that in 2001/02 an estimated prevalence of 520 000 people in Great Britain were suffering, in their opinion, from a musculoskeletal disorder mainly affecting the back that was caused or made worse by their current or past work. This equates to 1.2% of people who have ever worked in Great Britain. SWI01/02 estimated that 20% of sufferers, 104 000 people ever employed, first became aware of their work-related musculoskeletal disorder mainly affecting the back in the previous 12 months. In terms of people employed in the last 12 months, this equates to an estimated incidence rate of 0.33%. Each year thousands of new cases of musculoskeletal disorders require some level of specialist intervention. An estimated 2084 cases of spine/back disorders were seen for the first time in 2002 by rheumatologists and occupational physicians reporting to the MOSS (Musculoskeletal Occupational Surveillance Scheme) and OPRA (Occupational Physicians Reporting Activity) surveillance schemes.

What is Back pain?
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Back pain is one of humanity's most frequent complaints and does not usually reflect any underlying disease. However, anyone with back pain should first consult a Physician, as back pain can sometimes indicate significant and serious conditions which might not otherwise be diagnosed. As examples, recurrent lower back pain may reflect nerve damage to the legs, say from multiple sclerosis , with the result that back muscles are starting to do more and more of the work of moving the legs forward, as the legs weaken. Some genetic conditions also cause lower back pain, such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which causes (amongst other symptoms) recurrent strain and injury from even minor physical activity.

LowBack Musculoskeletal Disorders. There is strong evidence that low-back disorders are associated with work-related lifting and forceful movements.
http://www.ergonext.com/aa-studies/studies-lowback.htm
Home Programs Training Prevention ... Contact Us Low-Back Musculoskeletal Disorders Over 40 recent articles provided evidence regarding the relationship between low-back disorder and the five physical workplace factors that were considered in this review. These included (1) heavy physical work, (2) lifting and forceful movements, (3) bending and twisting (awkward postures), (4) whole-body vibration (WBV), and (5) static work postures. Many of the studies addressed multiple work-related factors. All articles that addressed a particular workplace factor contributed to the information used to draw conclusions about that risk factor, regardless of whether results were positive or negative. The review provided evidence for a positive relationship between back disorder and heavy physical work, although risk estimates were more moderate than for lifting/forceful movements, awkward postures, and WBV. This was perhaps due to subjective and imprecise characterization of exposures. Evidence for dose-response was equivocal for this risk factor. There is strong evidence The review provided evidence that work-related awkward postures are associated with low-back disorders. Results were consistent in showing positive associations, with several risk estimates above three. Exposure-response relationships were demonstrated. Many of the studies adjusted for potential covariates and a few examined the simultaneous effects of other work-related physical factors. Again, it appeared that lifting and awkward postures both contribute to risk of low-back disorder.

Back injuries account for 28% of reported accidents in the mining sector. In light of this, the mining sector's joint sector-based association requested that the IRSST study the question of back disorders in its sector. The analysis of back injuries that occurred between January 1987 and October 1993 shows that the type of work is a more decisive factor in back injuries than individual factors such as age and experience. The workstations of operators of heavy machinery and labourers were identified as having a higher proportion of back injuries than those of miners, diamond diggers and mechanics. The handling of heavy loads and falls are the main causes of these injuries. This identification of risky occupations should help in the development of strategies aimed at eliminating back pain in Québec's mining sector.

Researchers [1] and experts [2] have associated back disorders with the following activities:
  • lifting
  • repeat bending at the waist
  • bending at the waist with twisting
  • long term bending at the waist
  • pushing/pulling
  • carrying
  • reaching
  • long term poor posture - sitting or standing
  • sitting while absorbing vibration through the body (as in truck driving) Personal Factors
Experts [2] have also associated personal characteristics with the development of back disorders that include:
  • loss of body flexibility - becoming stiff
  • poor physical condition - losing the strength and endurance to perform physical tasks without strain.

    Abstract
Background: Back disorders have long been recognized as a serious problem within the military aviation community and a possible threat to mission accomplishment. The purpose of the present study was to determine the extent to which the type of aircraft flown is associated with diagnosed back problems, and to examine differences in the prevalence of back disorders between pilots and aircrew. Methods: A case control study was conducted in which U.S. Navy pilots and aircrew members with a diagnosed back disorder on their most recent physical exam between 1991 and 1993 were compared with pilots and aircrew without such diagnoses. Data were obtained from the automated physical examination records maintained by the Naval Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute for all Naval aviation personnel. Results: Results showed that aircrew members have a higher risk of diagnosed back problems than pilots for both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The study revealed that flight engineers have a higher risk of diagnosed back problems than other aircrew members. Among pilots, no association was found between type of aircraft and diagnosed back problems. Information on subscribing, and on obtaining copies of an article or of an entire issue.
