Schematic diagram comparing some anatomic and neurotransmitter features of autonomic and somatic motor nerves.
Only the primary transmitter substances are shown. Parasympathetic ganglia are found in or near the wall of the organ innervated. Note that some sympathetic postganglionic fibers release acetylcholine or dopamine rather than norepinephrine. The adrenal medulla, a modified sympathetic ganglion, receives sympathetic preganglionic fibers and releases epinephrine and norepinephrine into the blood.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is primarily associated with the 'automatic' control of many organs, as both a homeostatic and acute regulator in response to changing physiological, environmental and emotional stimuli. The ANS can be subdivided into two principal anatomical components (1) the sympathetic and (2) the parasympathetic systems. Both systems have diffuse efferent branches that project to organ systems such as the heart, lungs, circulation, gastrointestinal tract, adrenal medullae, genitals, exocrine glands, eyes, bladder and the urinary tract among others. The ANS is both directly and indirectly involved in the aetiology of many disease processes including asthma, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. As the ANS is implicated in the development many diseases the investigation of this system has received much attention. The parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems have been regarded as antagonistic. This behaviour is exemplified in end organ responses such as the heart where, an increase in sympathetic activity increases the heart rate whilst an increase in parasympathetic activity decreases the heart rate. This has resulted in a depiction of the autonomic nervous system as a balance swinging around a fulcrum (illustrated in Figure 1).

    Autonomic nervous system
The autonomic nervous system concentrates on maintaining homeostasis regardless of the changes in the internal environment, and on controlling the involuntary functions of organs , such as digestion , breathing, metabolism or blood pressure . Although these actions cannot be controlled by our will, they are influenced by our state of mind, and we can become aware of them, mainly when something does not work properly, causing us to feel pain The autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system comprise the peripheral nervous system . The somatic system regulates body functions which can be affected by our will, such as the motor functions of the skeletal muscle and the perception of sensory stimuli. The autonomic nervous system is divided into three elements which act together, either in a synergistic or an antagonistic way. They are called the sympathetic , the parasympathetic , and the enteric systems. Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are subdivisions of the efferent portion of the autonomic division. The sympathetic system is responsible for the provision of energy needed especially in emergency situations like hunger , fear, or extreme physical activity. Therefore the sympathetic

Autonomic Disorders Research and Treatment Program he Autonomic Disorders Research and Treatment Program at the Department of Neurology of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, is a comprehensive program committed to research, education and patient care. The program has been caring for patients since 1985, seeing several hundred patients with confirmed or suspected autonomic disorders every year. A central part of the program are clinical trials of new therapies for autonomic disorders, including novel treatments for: All protocols are approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Mount Sinai Medical Center. Research is also being conducted on the role of the vestibular system in the middle ear in controlling the autonomic nervous system, particularly as it pertains to maintaining blood pressure and blood supply to the brain in the upright posture. Several other research projects are also underway, including the value of brain magnetic resonance imaging in the differential diagnosis of autonomic disorders with parkinsonism.

The Autonomic Nervous System and Aromatherapy > Customer Review #1: EXCELLENT!!! MUST HAVE FOR ALL SERIOUS AROMATHERAPISTS

I have been practicing aromatherapy for the past 10 years and this is book is an absolute must have for any serious aromatherapy practioner. This is the ONLY book I have found which gives a clear description of how and why essential oils do not have the same reaction on everybody. For example, when experimenting on myself I could not understand why a strong stimulating oil such as Rosemary would have the opposite effect on me. This book is absolutely invaluable in the field of aromatherapy and one which I refer to over and over again. The only complaint I have is that Jennine hasnt written another book yet.

Heike S. Buhl, M.D. AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM AND ENERGETIC MEDICINE Bioenergetic and Psychosomatic Causes for Health and Illness Translation by Christine Genrich INTRODUCTION This talk evolved from another one I held in January of 1991. Back then; I was wondering what special contribution towards body therapy I had to make, based on my daily work as a medical doctor with Reich's method. Case studies, emotional discharge techniques, theoretical concepts of the work - it all seemed right, just not my subject. Thus, I tried to recall how I had "come to Reich". I was in the middle of medical school and for years had been learning all sorts of illnesses and symptoms by heart. But the question of how illness actually develops was never raised in my studies. We only dealt with the "damage" and how best to repair it - almost like with a broken car, which won't run any more because the individual parts were just not built very well. With many diseases, I came across remarks like "etiology unknown" or "auto immune disease". The big questions - what exactly is the meaning behind the term "auto immune disease", where does cancer originate, how does cardiovascular disease develop - remained unanswered.

    What are diabetes problems?
Too much glucose (sugar) in the blood for a long time can cause diabetes problems. This high blood glucose (also called blood sugar) can damage many parts of the body, such as the heart, blood vessels, eyes, and kidneys. Heart and blood vessel disease can lead to heart attacks and strokes. You can do a lot to prevent or slow down diabetes problems. This booklet is about nerve problems that can be caused by diabetes. You will learn the things you can do each day and during each year to stay healthy and prevent diabetes problems.
