Notes on the Autonomic Nervous System
(for FANZCA part I)
Introduction Adrenergic ANS Cholinergic ANS Enteric ANS The word 'autonomic' comes from two Greek words that mean 'self' and 'law'. In contrast to the somatic nervous system over which we have voluntary control, the autonomic nervous system is largely a law unto itself. It is traditional to break the autonomic nervous system (ANS) into a central and peripheral component, and then to further subdivide the peripheral ANS into:
  • sympathetic nervous system (SNS)
  • parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)
  • enteric nervous system (grudgingly added some time after the first two components were identified; we will abbreviate this to ENS). In fact, there is intricate interplay between all of the above 'components', and indeed between the ANS and the somatic nervous system, so such subdivision makes about as much sense as arbitrarily sub-dividing, say, a charging elephant into a left side and a right side! Nevertheless, it is convenient to talk about such 'subdivisions', and who are we to break with hallowed tradition? It is also traditional to regard the SNS and the PNS as antagonists - the SNS is said to mediate 'flight, fight or fright' responses, and the PNS more relaxed visceral and 'vegetative' functions. This too is crude over-simplification, as many viscera are controlled by both sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation, and there is always some sympathetic tone, even in the most relaxed individual parked off on a beach!

(Supported by National Institute for Child Health and Development) This project is aimed to evaluate heart rate variability in the human fetus with respect to acoustic stimulation. For this research, the information is obtained using devices developed by Dr. Mooney, that quantitative autonomic responses in the fetus. The devices are located in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic in Mobile and produce small (1Mb) to large data-sets (1 Gb). Researchers in Little Rock communicate with Mobile several times per day with this project. The bandwidth available at this time is inadequate, when interruptions occur the file cannot be uploaded completely. As a result, often Fed-Ex has to be used to transfer the data sets back and forth between Little Rock and Mobile.

    Autonomic nervous system
The autonomic nervous system concentrates on maintaining homeostasis regardless of the changes in the internal environment, and on controlling the involuntary functions of organ s, such as digestion , breathing, metabolism or blood pressure . Although these actions cannot be controlled by our will, they are influenced by our state of mind, and we can become aware of them, mainly when something does not work properly, causing us to feel pain The autonomic nervous system and the somatic nervous system comprise the central nervous system . The somatic system regulates body functions which can be affected by our will, such as the motor functions of the skeletal muscle and the perception of sensory stimuli. The autonomic nervous system is divided into three elements which act together, either in a synergistic or an antagonistic way. They are called the sympathetic , the parasympathetic , and the enteric systems. Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are subdivisions of the

Autonomic Nervous System: The autonomic nervous system serves as a relay station to the visceral organs of the body. It is an efferent system, meaning it sends out motor impulses to the organs. It regulates many body functions to maintain homeostasis.
Most motor pathways usually have one motor neuron from the brain or spinal cord. In the autonomic nervous system, the message is transferred at the synapse from one neuron to a second one that carries it to the muscle or gland cell.
The autonomic nervous system is actually part of the peripheral nervous system in that it consists of motor portions of some cranial and spinal nerves. Because it's functioning is so specialized, however, the ANS is usually discussed as a separate entity.
The autonomic nervous system consists of certain motor neurons that conduct impulses from the spinal cord or brain stem to cardiac muscle tissue, smooth muscle tissue, and glandular tissue.

WHAT IS THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM? The nervous system is divided into central, peripheral and autonomic divisions. The autonomic nervous system is involved with autonomous functions essential for our survival. For example, the autonomic system controls heart rates, breathing, intestinal, urinary and sexual functions. It also controls skin and body temperature, as well as how our body responds to stress. In SDS the autonomic system is impaired.

With advancing age, the autonomic nervous system (ANS), heart and blood vessels become less capable of maintaining hemodynamic stability. While aging is, of course, a heterogeneous process both within and among individuals, some aspects are characteristic of the elderly cohort. Typical developments include a diminution in the tonic influence of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), a decline in the responsiveness of b -receptors and a progressive replacement of supple, functional cardiac and vascular tissue by stiff, fibrotic material. Veins are also subject to progressive stiffening with age. The decreased compliance of the capacitance system reduces its ability to "buffer" changes in intravascular volume. Thus, aging can exaggerate the hypotension that results from blood loss, as well as from the peripheral pooling of blood with general or conduction anesthesia.
