Parents Medical Problems
Autism is a developmental disability that usually shows symptoms between 18 and 36 months. Autism affects children in many different ways and, as a result, is medically referred to as a "spectrum disorder." More than 500,000 people in the United States have been diagnosed with autism; it may occur in as many as one in 500 individuals and is four times more prevalent in boys than girls. In the last 5 years, autism has become the third most common form of developmental delay, and now occurs more commonly than Down syndrome . Because there is nothing abnormal about the child's physical appearance, this disorder can be difficult to recognize. Causes
There is no one specific cause of autism. Current research focuses on biological and neurological differences in the brain, including biochemical imbalances, genetic influences, and immunologic problems. Food allergies , excessive amounts of yeast in the digestive tract, and exposure to environmental toxins have all been implicated. Symptoms
Children exhibit mild to severe symptoms of delay, in many combinations and varying degrees of severity, although in all cases, the ability to communicate and social interaction are the most impaired functions.

108. Until Proven Innocent - The Process.
Describes steps of criminal justice process, particulary as applies to people on the autism Spectrum.
http://www.scn.org/people/autistics/process.html
until proven innocent
The Criminal Justice Process
Boring text warning: This describes details of the criminal justice process as applies to people on the autism Spectrum. If this isn't engaging, consider skimming it or skip down to the " not guilty " section.
Summary
Many of the assumptions of the criminal process focus on "normal" NT behaviour. This generally is not a problem, but there are times when police and court efficiency conflicts with the reality of normal behaviour of autistics. It is therefore possible that someone on The Spectrum will have a run-in with the criminal justice system. "The Spectrum" generally means the autism Spectrum, including Asperger's syndrome, HFA, PDD and Kanner's autism. Many of us are comfortable with the generic reference of "autistic".
For the above reason someone on The Spectrum should be prepared for an encounter with the criminal justice system. This is a four-fold process:
  • initial police encounter
  • investigative and interrogative procedures
  • prosecution
  • prison environment
    The Procedure
The four steps can be explained as follows.

Inquiry into vaccine safety is exploding like never before, even in the popular press. Research coming from dozens of mainstream medical studies can no longer be easily suppressed, as it has been in the past, especially with the prevalence of online information exchange. Last September, some 2,000 people, mostly MDs, assembled at the Town and Country resort in San Diego to hear the latest research on autism. Following the April 2000 Congressional hearings on autism and vaccines, this epidemic can no longer be ignored.

www.ukautism.com:Autism Awareness Campaign UK calls for better Public Services Ivan and Charika Corea of the Autism Awareness Campaign in the UK have called on Her Majesty's Government to provide better public services for the 520,000 autistic community in 2004.
Autism is very much in the news in the UK. Mark Haddon's 'must read' book 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time' is a best seller - the central character, a 15 year old boy has a form of autism. Charlotte Moore's wonderful tome, 'George and Sam' was published in the UK. Autism Awareness Week was a huge success for the National Autistic Society. The All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism (APPGA) chaired by Liz Blackman MP celebrated the first anniversary of the APPGA Manifesto in Westminster.
The Autism Awareness Campaign UK are calling for the 'personalisation' of public services to break the postcode lottery - some councils are withholding public services on the grounds of cost. There is a great deal of suffering as a result of their actions.
'We are asking Tony Blair and the Government to empower us - give us tailor made packages and funding so that we could go out and get the public services we badly need. Personalisation will give us better choice and alternatives, we don't have to be at the mercy of councils, and NHS Trusts. It will also sharpen councils, social services, LEAs and NHS Trusts who will have to be on their toes or else parents, carers and autists will 'shop elsewhere' for public services,' said Ivan Corea in Autism Awareness Week 2004.

Psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen and his colleagues at Cambridge's Autism Research Centre have created the Autism-Spectrum Quotient, or AQ, as a measure of the extent of autistic traits in adults. In the first major trial using the test, the average score in the control group was 16.4. Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher. The test is not a means for making a diagnosis, however, and many who score above 32 and even meet the diagnostic criteria for mild autism or Asperger's report no difficulty functioning in their everyday lives.
Definitely agree Slightly agree Slightly disagree Definitely disagree I prefer to do things with others rather than on my own. I prefer to do things the same way over and over again. If I try to imagine something, I find it very easy to create a picture in my mind. I frequently get so strongly absorbed in one thing that I lose sight of other things. I often notice small sounds when others do not.

"Asperger's: What Does it Mean to Me?" by Catherine Faherty is a book that dramatically expands the understanding of high functioning autism and Asperger's to the caregiver as well as the individuals with these challenges. One chapter instructs the caregiver, either parent or professional, while the next leads the individual with Asperger's/HFA through a necessary adventure of self discovery. The unique binding makes it easy to copy lessons to be used over and over again. Asperger's: What Does It Mean to Me?
Faherty, Catherine This workbook gives children and teens with high-functioning autism and Asperger's Syndrome an opportunity to understand themselves and their diagnosis. Explaining that autism is "another way of thinking and being", it offers activities that help children understand learning styles, sensory experiences, artistic talent, other people, communication, the school environment, friends, and feelings. In each of these areas, introductory material is addressed to the parent, teacher, or therapist explaining how they can help structure the child's experience in order to promote understanding and positive interaction. Special binding allows for easy photcopying for classroom use.
Dr. Gary Mesibov, director of the TEACCH program in North Carolina states, "The author's marvelous ability to understand the perspectives of people with autism and her wonderful talent of explaining difficult concepts at a level they can understand is very special. This book is a very unique opportunity to help people with autism . . ."
