University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida
email: research@chem-tox.com T his report is the result of a 1997 Graduate Student Research Project conducted through the Special Education Department at the University of South Florida. The project involved extensive research of published peer reviewed medical journal articles which have shown environmental and chemical exposure factors can cause damage to the delicate brain growth processes in the unborn child during pregnancy, thereby demonstrating potential to cause Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, Hyperactivity and other child behavior anomalies. This report generates serious concern as public exposure to identified chemical sources continues to grow due to increased use in homes, jobs and consumer products.
The impact of the resulting decreased quality of offspring upon the families,
schools and society is discussed.

107. Why Girls With Attention Deficit Disorder Go Undiagnosed
Why Girls with attention deficit disorder Go Undiagnosed. Many people think attention deficit disorder (ADD) is a boy s disease.
http://www.womenshealth.org/a/attention_deficit_disorder_girls.htm
Why Girls with Attention Deficit Disorder Go Undiagnosed Their Symptoms Are Not The Same As In Boy
As these girls hit the teen years, the increased organizational demands of junior high and high school become too much. They may become tired and disheartened by poor school performance. The girls with hyperactivity may throw themselves into social relationships to compensate. They may be described as "boy-crazy" or "party girls". ADD and ADHD girls alike begin to show more risky sexual and other behaviors. They may use drugs or alcohol both due to increasing impulsivity and to self-medicate. Shoplifting, teen pregnancy, and eating disorders are also found more often in females with ADD. Why the Symptoms Are Different
The differences in actual enviromental disorganization are clearly due to social factors. But, no one knows for certain why there is such a large difference in hyperactive behavior between the two genders. It could be that girls have more pressure to conform. Course, loud social behavior in a boy may be tolerated. But, a girl may be more pressured into silence. Likewise for girls, the impulsive actions may get a more negative reaction from adults and peers alike. In fact, it has been found that girls with ADHD (those who do express the hyperactive qualities) have more negative social consequences than boys. This is true even though the boys have more hyperactivity. No physical differences have been identified. Girls With ADD Are Not Considered A Problem To Their Teachers

What are the problems? The words attention deficit and hyperactivity are used by professionals to describe the problems of children who are overactive and have difficulties concentrating. In everyday life, people often describe children who become excitable, boisterous or disobedient as hyperactive. The professional term refers to a more severe and long-lasting problem. The terms attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are used in the USA. The official term in the UK is hyperkinetic disorder . It describes a severe condition which affects about 1 in 100 primary school children. These differences in terminology sometimes causes confusion. In both instances, affected children usually have problems with attention control and overactivity. What are the signs?

WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA. It is estimated that 3-5% of the school-age population in the United States suffer from attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Prominent symptoms of this disorder are a poor attention span, inability to complete tasks, hyperactivity, and a tendency to interrupt others. Almost one quarter of children with ADHD also suffer from one or more specific learning disabilities in math, spelling or reading.

GUILDFORD, UNITED KINGDOM. Dyslexia is a fairly common condition which involves difficulties in learning to read and write, mirror reversals of letters and words, and poor short-term memory. Dyslexia is closely related to dyspraxia (problems with coordination and muscle control) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. It is estimated that about 10% of the populations of the United States and the United Kingdom suffer from dyslexia and 4% are severely affected. There was a 3-fold increase in the prevalence of learning disorders in the USA over the period 1976 to 1993 and 80% of the new cases involved dyslexia.

118. ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder And Yoga
Yoga for babies and children with special needs Down syndrome, autism, attention deficit disorder, ADHD, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities.
http://www.specialyoga.com/add.htm
Attention Deficit Disorder is a behavioral disorder formally defined as a significant deficiency in age-appropriate attention, impulse control and rule-governed behavior, which manifests in early childhood. Associated behaviors include: difficulty in following instructions; speaking or acting before one thinks; poor organizational skills; restlessness; impatience; forgetfulness; low self-esteem; and, in the case of children with ADHD, hyperactivity. Some experts believe that attention deficit disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, but there is no documented proof that this is actually the case. The incidence of attention deficit disorder varies from 3 to 15 percent for school age population, depending on the strictness of the diagnosis. Sometimes referred to as ADD or ADD/WO (attention deficit disorder without hyperactivity), children with this disorder generally do not perform well in school, though most of them test at average or above average intelligence. Since breath is deeply connected to the emotions, teaching yogic breathing exercises (pranayama) is an ideal way to start working with children who have attention deficit disorder. However, it is important for the yoga teacher to first find a way to create a strong bond with the child, in order to gain the child's trust and attention. Then the exercises will progress more rapidly. In addition to its positive effect on the emotions, pranayama stimulates vital areas of the brain and central nervous system. By combining pranayama with yoga poses (asanas) and deep relaxation, the benefits are greatly enhanced. With regular yoga practice, children with attention deficit disorder develop greater body awareness, emotional balance and concentration - increasing their capacity for schoolwork and creative play. As overall performance improves, so does their self-esteem.
