The Infinite Mind: Attachment Week of January 2, 2002 It's human to connect. Without the opportunity for consistent relationships early in life, though, development founders. This show explores attachment disorder and attachment problems that affect children who have been abused and neglected. Guests include psychiatrist Dr. Charles Zeanah , clinical psychologist Robert Karen Thais Tepper , the founder of the Network for the Post-Institutionalized Child, and Joyce Peters , the adoptive mother of a child with attachment disorder. Host Dr. Fred Goodwin begins the show by noting that attachment disorder is a relatively new term that was absent from psychiatric textbooks as little as five years ago. Since then, an increase in adoptions from Eastern Europe, Russia and China and a new appreciation for the importance of environment in shaping children have brought attachment problems to the fore. Dr. Goodwin notes that the term attachment disorder is reserved for children who are so damaged by abuse and neglect they don't bond with caretakers and wreak havoc on everyone around them. Many of them, Dr. Goodwin points out, make remarkable recoveries. Joyce Peters then discusses her daughter, Elizabeth, who was abandoned by her birth mother at the age of four. After that, Elizabeth was moved from 10 foster homes until, at the age of 8½, she was adopted by Peters. Elizabeth had tantrums, stole, lied, played with fire and rebuffed contact with Peters. Eventually, a doctor diagnosed Elizabeth with attachment disorder. She has since received therapy. Peters recounts her daughter's progress and says, since Elizabeth can now talk about her traumatic past, says she's confident Elizabeth will make it. You can e-mail Joyce Peters at

Attachment Disorders Part 2
Teaching Teachers by Linda Ann Smith
Editor's Note: In Part I of Tulsa Today's three part series, Linda Ann Smith explained the causes and symptoms of attachment disorders. Unattached children display startling and bizarre behavior and seem to lack conscience for their actions. They are guided only by what they want at the moment. They have no regard for how their behavior impacts another human being. Coping with the behavior of an unattached child in the classroom is one of the most demanding challenges teachers face. Unattached children are manipulative and self-centered. They have extreme self-control difficulties. However, they attempt to control everyone around them. Discipline techniques may seem awkward to teachers who have never experienced the controlling behavior of a severely unattached child. Love and praise are simply not sufficient for these children. Unattached children learn trust only when they begin to give up control. The following tips for teachers are a collection of ideas from parents, teachers, and experienced professionals in the field: 1. Establish Eye Contact

Attachment Disorders Part 3
Dear Mom
by Linda Ann Smith I'm only a baby, and to become emotionally well-adjusted later I need your help! Do you think it will hurt Dad's feelings that I asked you first? I hope not. His love and care are very important to me too! Mom, I already have a special relationship with you. Before I was born, I knew the warmth of your body, the rhythm of your heartbeat and the sound of your voice. Now a stronger bond with you will help me learn to trust others for physical and emotional comfort. When you see my sweet little face, can you imagine that later I could develop severe behavior problems or even commit serious crimes? Probably not! But if I fail to bond now I could develop an attachment disorder and have difficulty with human relationships when I become and adult. Failure to bond with my parent(s) places me at high risk for growing into a manipulative, controlling, "unattached child" without a conscience and with extreme self-control problems. We don't have any time to waste! It's important that I develop strong emotional attachments with my primary caregiver within the first eighteen months of my life. I could develop an attachment disorder if I experience abuse, neglect, or poor parenting skills. I need to trust you for comfort and won't understand if you are not aware that I am in pain or why you cannot always stop my pain. Attachment problems could arise if our bonding cycle is interrupted due to illness, hospitalization, divorce, or death. It can be dangerous for me to experience numerous changes in childcare, or an "emotionally absent" mother due to chronic maternal depression, drug abuse, or a severe psychiatric disorder. Gee, Mom, that's a lot of responsibility for you, but don't get discouraged.

Attachment Disorders by Nancy Thompson
Hello!
My name is Nancy Thompson and I am a child and family therapist in Omaha. For the past five years or so I have been traveling around Nebraska teaching classes to foster parents, so I may already have met some of you. If so, you know that I have a special interest in spreading information about Primary Infant Attachment and what effects occur when there are disruptions during the first three years of life. I have found so many of you that are dealing with attachment related behaviors every single day and I feel that this information is crucial to helping you do the best possible job of working with these struggling youngsters.
Now the Department of Health and Human Services is moving into the high tech age of computers and has asked me to be the first to use this new way of teaching and talking to you. I admit I'm rather nervous and, with good reason, since I routinely break VCR's (Video Cassette Recorder) and other small appliances! Actually, I am pretty excited about doing this and hope that many of you will take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions on the bulletin board. I will try to answer as many as possible in the time allotted to me. Of course, you understand that I cannot diagnose attachment disorder in your particular child. Instead, I will try to give some helpful tips for handling some of the difficult situations and control battles that are so much a part of living with an attachment disordered child. Sometimes just describing the problem and expressing feelings about it can be a big help.

Definition Reactive attachment disorder is a disturbance of social interaction caused by neglect of a child's basic physical and emotional needs, particularly during infancy. Babies placed in orphanages at birth and raised by multiple caretakers without primary parent-figures can also develop this disorder, even if physical care was adequate. Reactive attachment disorder is caused by neglect of an infant's needs for physical safety, food, touching, and emotional bonds with a primary and/or secondary caretaker.

Support group nearby for parents of Attachment Disordered children?
Aug 1999 Does anyone know of a support group nearby for parents of Attachment Disordered children? This disorder is most found in adopted kids, but can also occur in children who have had major disruptions in (or neglect/abuse from) their caregivers in their first years of life. My adopted teen has been recently diagnosed and we want to share respite and information with similar families. Regarding attachment disordered adopted kids, I suggest you contact FAIR (Families Adopting in Response) 650-856-3513. They are an old time organization with an excellent newsletter and they run this type of support group. I believe that they have a group in the East Bay or SF. There is also a local therapist who specializes in adoption: Susan Love. Peggy Re: Attachment Disorder Resources... are you in contact with organization called PACT, that addresses issues for adopted chidlren of color?
