21. Attachment Disorder Register Your Child Today.
creating a database of children and adults with reactive attachment disorder.
http://www.rad-uk.fslife.co.uk
Welcome to RAD-UK
web site
If you have a child who has the symptoms of Reactive Attachment Disorder you need to register on this web site to day. I have analized the data coming back from the parents who register their children, enter the web site to see the shocking figures that reveal RAD children are not receiving the help they need.
This is the only UK register for children and Adults who have the symptoms of RAD. If we are going to make a difference to way this disorder is treated then we must stand together and be counted.
This is the second year of the web site and I would like this web site to make a difference. If you have a child with Attatchment disorder you can help make a difference. We are going to create a letter mountain to minister for children. I want everyone to work together and send letters or emails to the minister for children. The letters or emails must all be sent on the same day. Not just parents, grand parrents, brothers, sisters, freinds, anyone who knows you can join the letter mountain. Letters should also be send to the leader of the opposition party. Enter the web site to find out more details.
We are counting your child. Your child and the RAD children of the future are counting on you! Please support this web site by helping to create the only database of RAD affected children and Adults in the UK.

http://www.abcofpa.net/
The Attachment and Bonding Center of PA IS THERE HOPE FOR HEALING?
Welcome At ABC of PA, we believe in hope for healing. The Attachment and Bonding Center of PA specializes in the treatment of children and adolescents with attachment difficulties - children who are suffering from a seeming inability to form an attachment or bond with those who love them most. It is the nature of humans to want love, safety and closeness with others. In our first 3 years of life, a foundation is laid. We each must learn "is the world safe? caring? predictable?" In a loving and consistent relationship with a primary caregiver, we develop a sense of well-being, and a trust in others. But for children who have suffered early experiences of neglect, abuse, hospitalizations, institutionalization, painful illness, or separations from a primary caregiver, relationships are frightening and unpredictable. These children become reluctant to trust or love others. And they become driven - driven to control every aspect of life in an effort to control their pain. They grow up believing they are unlovable and that others must not be trusted. Life is empty and survival is the only goal.

Reactive Attachment Disorder
I had heard of the terms before, but until I agreed to take my 12-year-old nephew in, “reactive attachment disorder”, sometimes known as “detachment disorder”, or simply “attachment disorder”, held no personal significance to me. My wife and I took our nephew in to live with us a year ago last January. While we knew, and anticipated that there would be problems, we had no idea as to the extent of his disability. Our nephew was diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder, or RAD, shortly after coming to live with us in January of 2002; and despite the fact that this is a disorder that was barely on my screen of consciousness prior to that time, my wife and I have both come to understand it reasonably well. Making it go away was another matter entirely. As a paramedic for 20 years, I have come to appreciate signs and symptoms pointing to specific diagnoses, yet was astounded to see how closely and how clearly our nephew fit the pattern for reactive attachment disorder. I only wish that treating the problem were as easy as diagnosing it appears to be. Through books, tapes, classes, and conferences, my wife and I have been devouring all of the useful information we can find on attachment disorders and, as we have learned more, we’ve added to this site. If you’ve just begun your own search for ways in which you can help your child, this is a good place to start. We have included links to books that may be helpful and to other useful sites we’ve found on the Internet. We’ve also created a support board on Delphi Forums, and you can find a link to it in our Books and Resources section, along with other support forums on the subject.’

Purpose
The field of attachment therapy continues to grow and evolve. It currently includes a broad array of interventions and modalities based on common principles and theories of attachment and healthy development. The membership of the Association for Treatment and Training in the Attachment of Children (ATTACh) represents diversity both in terms of professional and parent members, as well as in the utilization of specific interventions and modalities. Attachment therapy has been erroneously construed as synonymous with Holding Therapy. However, attachment therapy increasingly encompasses an ever-expanding continuum of interventions. The unifying theme across this continuum is the goal of providing corrective experiences of attunement. Attunement is the experience of “feeling felt” by another person and “forms the nonverbal basis of collaborative, contingent communication” (Siegel, 1999). “(A) transforming attuned relationship would involve the following fundamental elements: contingent, collab-

Gives information on the stages of attachment and bonding chronologically through infancy as they relate to attachment disorder.

Washington Parent Magazine Bonding and Attachment When it Goes Right Lawrence B. Smith, L.C.S.W.-C., L.I.C.S.W. B Bonding and attachment are terms that are often used interchangeably. However, the stages of infancy and toddlerhood are more accurately portrayed by distinguishing bonding from attachment. Bonding These two bonding cycles form the foundation out of which attachment grows. While bonding is about trust, attachment is about affection. Attachment can be defined as a person-specific relationship that is dominated by affectionate interchanges. It is not a prisoner of immediate time and space, but extends beyond that. Attachment initially grows out of many instances of a young infant experiencing her parent as reflecting her emotional state. As a child grows, other mutually satisfying interactions add to the parent-child attachment. Attachment at Different Ages The indications that bonding and attachment are progressing in a healthy manner vary as an infant grows. In the first month of life, an infant experiences herself as one with the surrounding environment. The basic developmental task is for an infant to achieve a physiological balance and rhythm. This balance evolves out of numerous completions of the infant bonding cycle and prepares the way for bonding and attachment.

We can help, with skilled diagnosis and caring therapy. Traditional therapies (play, talk, expressive) do not work with children who have attachment and bonding problems, because they rely on the ability to form a trusting reciprocal relationship with the therapist - something a child with attachment issues cannot do! We rely on a myriad of treatment techniques designed to reach the unreachable child. These techniques and interventions are tailored to meet the individual needs of the child and family in treatment, and may include cognitive restructuring, psychodrama, holding, somato-emotional release, reparenting, behavioral management, narrative therapy, EMDR and Theraplay. We also utilize family and couples therapy to help parents and siblings heal from the emotional wounds that result from living with a rage-filled child.

Attchment Disorder and the Family by Regina M. Kupecky, L.S.W. Children with attachment disorder have suffered greatly, usually at the hands of those who are supposed to care of them, love them, support them, and even die to protect them - their birth families, and usually more specifically their birth mom. It sometimes seems easier, safer, and less chaotic to raise these children in institutional care, allowing them to avoid the close attachments they fear and react to with such vehemence. The problem with that philosophy is that they never learn the skills needed to achieve family living. Once emancipated, they form families of their own, and thus perpetuate the cycle of neglect, abuse, and out of home care so familiar to us all. Family living is the best place for children with attachment disorder to learn, heal, and change. It is only through experiential day-to-day living that a child can learn that families can be safe and nurturing, and can meet his needs. It is a place to practice being a good spouse and parent. Traditional training in mental health and social work often produces professionals who empower the child rather than the family. A view of the apparently dysfunctional substitute family who is parenting a child with attachment disorder can lead professionals to look for abuse, poor parenting, anger, and control issues in the adults. Blaming parents is often the response which is not helpful. Support for the family must come from caring professionals forming an alliance with the adults, trusting what they say, and not minimizing their pain. Finding a professional who believes them, acknowledges the reality of their experience, and offers hope for change is often an added challenge to the family. They do not need another professional telling them to "love the child more and it will be all right." Love is not the cure - it only helps facilitate the cure.
