Why Zebras? "If you hear hoofbeats in the woods, think horses, not zebras!" This saying is a reminder that in any given situation, one should consider the obvious before one considers the unusual. The Attachment Disorder Network believes many families are expecting to foster or adopt a cute little Shetland pony, but instead find themselves living with an undomesticated zebra! How could this possibly happen? After all, they look so much like horses. But when you live with one for a while you realize that this child is not the same breed as the others. And why do social workers and school authorities find it so difficult to identify children with the potential to harm other children? Often it can be traced back to Attachment Disorder a mental and emotional condition occurring during the first three years of life that causes a child not to attach, bond or trust his primary caretaker. It's often the result of abuse, severe neglect or a foster care system unable to prevent children from bouncing from one placement to another. Attachment Disorder and its treatment have been hot topics in the news recently. "Children with this condition often wind up thieves, drug addicts or even murderers," said Terri Adams, President of Heal the Hearts Foundation . Yet today they are sitting in schoolrooms, playing in community parks, even eating at the family table.

Greetings Welcome to the Attachment Disorder Site, home of the Attachment Disorder Support List . Here you will find a wide variety of information to help you understand attachment issues. Attachment Disorders range in severity. In fact, the attachment continuum runs from securely attached through degrees of attachment issues all the way to those who suffer from severe attachment disorder as in my son's case. With the addition of hundreds of children adopted from institutional settings and from the foster care system, it is important for all of us to become educated regarding the potential and unique problems these children and their families face. It is by this understanding that we can forge ahead and learn to help our families heal. We must also remember that all adopted and foster care kids do not suffer from attachment disorder. A lot has to do with the individuals themselves - their physiological and psychological make-up, the type of environment they were in and the duration they were in that environment. With this in mind, we do not want people to become wary of adoption because of attachment disorder. We want people to become educated about it. I often wish I had known what was wrong sooner as I look back on years that were spent utilizing ineffective therapies and parenting strategies. We would have started on the road to healing sooner.

Correlation Between Bipolar Disorder and Reactive Attachment Disorder By John F. Alston, M.D.  Historically, mental health professionals have long associated Attention Deficit Disorder with Reactive Attachment Disorder. It is true that children who have been abused and/or neglected do have attentional problems secondary to their abusive circumstances or brain maturational problems. Experts have put this correlation of ADD and RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder) at between 40% and 70% for either abused/neglected children and/or adopted children.  In my experience as psychiatric consultant to the Attachment Center at Evergreen since 1977, as well as within my own private practice and consultations with other attachment programs and adoption agencies in which I supervise psychotherapists who work with attachment disorders, I have come to realize that Attention Deficit Disorder is vastly overdiagnosed in this clinical population, leading to inadequate, even contraindicated treatment. I have concluded that correlations between Bipolar Disorder and Reactive Attachment Disorder are indeed much more common. This conclusion has led to different, and in my experience, much more effective medical treatment plans for these children.  I have reached the above conclusion gradually over the last several years. In the past twenty five years, since my graduation from medical school, I have diagnosed and treated approximately 3,500 cases of ADD and approximately 1,000 cases of Bipolar Disorder. Particularly in my role as a consultant to The Attachment Center at Evergreen program, it has been my professional privilege and pleasure to assess and treat children from all over the United States and at least a few foreign countries. In my experience, this miscorrelation between ADD and Reactive Attachment Disorder is international.

He longed to be held, touched, caressed, talked to, played with, comforted, but there was no one else in this cold, wet, and smelly existence. Thus the infant learned to shut down. Slowly he learned not to feel the pain in his middle as much or the sores on him from the cold and constantly wet nappy. He learned to stare at the marks on the ceiling and when he could move, he learned to rock back and forth to meet his own needs for stimulation as best as he could. These early experiences that continued and worsened for my son left him with neurological, emotional, social, and physiological issues that have affected every part of his life including school. He has learned to compensate for many of them, and he is still healing with the Lord’s help. School continues to be the biggest stressor in his life, and I struggle to find the one or two people in his school that will take the time to understand my wounded son.

      What Is Attachment Disorder?
When this initial attachment is lacking, children lack the ability to form and maintain loving, intimate relationships. They grow up with an impaired ability to trust that the world is a safe place and that others will take good care of them. Without this sense of trust, children believes that they must be hypervigilant about their own safety. Unfortunately, their idea about safety prevents them from allowing others to take care of them in a loving, nurturing manner. They become extremely demanding and controlling in response to their fear. Emotionally they believe that if they do not control their world then they will die. Children without proper care in the first few years of life have an unusually high level of stress hormones, which adversely effect the way crucial aspects of the brain and body develop. Conscience development is dependent upon brain development and follows attachment. Therefore, these children lack prosocial values and morality as well as demonstrating aggressive, disruptive and antisocial behaviors. There are many reasons why the development of this connection can be disrupted. Factors that may contribute to impaired attachment include:
