Definition
'); // end hide from browsers >
A fungal infection that causes itchy or painful scaling, redness and blisters between the toes and on the soles of the feet.
Remedies:
Apply a fungicide such as Desenex, Tinactin, Lotrimin or Lamisil (the latter product is fairly new and has received good reviews from doctors for its fast action and effectiveness). Use these products two or three times a day for two to four weeks, and continue to use them for one to two weeks after symptoms are gone. The fungus remains even after the irritation disappears.
To relieve itching, apply Domeboro solution, or soak in baking soda mixed with water. Remove dead skin with a pumice stone, or rub fine sandpaper along the bottoms of your feet and discard the sandpaper.

It is the most common fungal infection affecting up to 70% of the population at some time. Fungal infections are usually enhanced by heat, moisture and skin break down. Frequently it starts in the moist toe webs then may spread along the base of the toes and soles of the feet. Not every scaly, red or oozing foot problem is due to fungal infection. Bacterial infections, dermatitis, psoriasis and other skin diseases can mimic a fungal infection of the foot. Persistent infections should be seen by your physician.

"Summer heat and humidity brings excess moisture and sweating to our bodies, creating the perfect setting for fungi to grow or fungal infections to develop," says dermatologist Guy Webster, M.D., Associate Professor and Director for Cutaneous Pharmacology at Thomas Jefferson University. "Fungi tend to thrive in warm, moist places, such as between the toes, in the groin, under the breasts and other parts of the body." One of every five persons gets a fungal infection at some time. Athlete's foot is the most common fungal skin infection in humans and affects an estimated 70 percent of adults. It occurs mostly among teenager and adult males. Many people will develop it at least once in their lives. Contrary to popular belief, walking barefoot in places like public showers, swimming pools and locker rooms are not the main causes of athletes foot, but they can be contributing factors. "Sweaty feet, not drying feet well after swimming or bathing, tight shoes and socks which offer no ventilation and a warm climate present the perfect setting for the fungus that causes athlete's foot to grow," notes Ronald Lepow, D.P.M., president-elect of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

ATHLETES FOOT Despite the name athletes foot this condition doesn't only infect sporty feet. It is a contagious fungal infection that anyone can get and affects as many as one in seven adults. The fungus that causes athlete's foot is a spore that can survive for up to two years and is usually picked up from walking barefoot across communal changing rooms. The infection usually starts between the little toe and the one next to it. At first the skin is itchy and sore sometimes becomes white, macerated and blisters. Then it starts to crack and peel and if untreated it can spreads to other areas, like the toe nails and sole of the foot. There are various creams and solutions that can be used to help prevent athlete's foot also some measures that you can take to avoid contracting athlete's foot are do not wear shoes without socks or tights, wear footwear which allow your feet to breath, wherever possible allow fresh air to get to your feet, consider wearing plastic shoes like flip-flops in communal showers, changing rooms and around pools, wash feet daily and dry them carefully; never share towels, change socks or tights daily and select socks and shoes made from natural materials. For treatment of athletes foot, simple cases can sometimes be helped with creams and solutions.

http://www.unshod.org/pfbc/pfathletes.htm
Athlete's Foot
The Athlete's Foot (tinea pedis) fungus sometimes has other manifestions with other names, but all are essentially caused by the same species of fungus. However, going barefoot is NOT what causes this fungus to spread. It's an oft-repeated myth that Athlete's Foot is contagious in this way. The spores appear to be generally available and just waiting for a ripe environment ... the hot sweaty insides of shoes. The main point is not how the spores are transmitted (dried fungal spores can float through the air) but HOW receptive is the host environment. The following is from the Athletes Foot pamphlet at the American Academy of Dermatology website Athlete's foot does not occur among people who traditionally go barefoot. It's moisture, sweating and lack of proper ventilation of the feet that present the perfect setting for the fungus of athlete's foot to grow.
It's commonly believed that athlete's foot is highly contagious that you can easily catch it from walking barefoot in the locker room. This is not true. Experiments to infect healthy skin with athlete's foot have failed and often one family member may have it without infecting others living in the same house. The full pamplet is available here at the American Academy of Dermatology website.

Athlete's foot, caused by the fungus Tinea pedis , is that reddish, crackled, flaky skin seen usually between the toes. It thrives in warm, moist places and is contagious. It can be contracted through contact with infected skin particles at home in the bathroom or in public places like locker rooms, showers or around public swimming pools.
One of the important things you can do to combat athlete's foot is to keep the feet dry at all times since the fungus needs moisture to grow. Here are some suggestions to help prevent and treat athletes foot:
  • Wear absorbent socks, preferably cotton, and wash them in hot water with bleach Keep your shoes well ventilated, and give them ample time to dry before wearing again Open-toed sandals are good to wear as they allow the feet to dry Before applying any medication, wash and dry your feet, removing any loose skin to allow better penetration of the agent into the infected area To avoid reinfection, wipe white vinegar or spray a disinfectant on the inside of your shoes

The fungus, called tinea pedis, usually grows in warm, moist areas. Athlete's foot can be contagious, although nobody knows why some people get it and others do not. Athlete's foot usually begins on the skin between the toes and sometimes spreads to the sides of the feet. The skin may become scaly, itchy, red and painful. It may blister, crack or peel. The foot may have an unpleasant odor. Athlete's foot sometimes goes away without medication, but is usually treated with a combination of anti-fungal medications and good foot care. These medications are available without a prescription in powder, cream or spray form. If needed, your health care provider can prescribe an oral anti-fungal medication. To prevent getting athlete's foot, keep your feet clean and dry. Dry your feet well after bathing and showering. Pay particular attention to the area between your toes. Wearing socks designed to wick away moisture may help keep your feet dry. Change your socks daily. Whenever possible, wear sandals or shoes made of natural materials, such as leather. They will allow your feet to "breathe." To prevent spreading the fungus, don't share towels, bath mats, socks or shoes. Don't go barefoot in wet, public areas such as health club showers, public swimming pools and water parks.
