Coronary Heart Disease

Atherosclerosis

Coronary Artery Disease
All these conditions and many more coronary, artery or heart conditions are a result of furred up arteries; arteries that become blocked either fully or partially with fatty plaque known as atheroma. This one process of furring up the arteries causes all of the above conditions and is therefore the western world's biggest killer. Raymond Gaftarnick found out some four years ago that his arteries were blocked by up to 50%. When he asked the Consultant how serious this was, he was told "Put it this way, I wouldn't want arteries like yours at your age." "The consultants comments scared me into doing something." said Raymond,"I gathered as much information about my condition as possible from various different sources. I used this information to good effect by adding a handful of products that can be bought in your local supermarket to my daily diet."

The Cholesterol Center is staffed with physicians who specialize in the treatment of lipid disorders. Registered dietitians customize lipid-lowering diets to accommodate your lifestyle. The laboratory is carefully standardized to provide accurate measurement of blood tests, including a lipid profile.
Why you should be concerned about high cholesterol
Elevated blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) are major risk factors for heart disease and stroke. High levels of cholesterol and its " bad" fraction (LDL-cholesterol), high levels of triglycerides, and low levels of the "good" cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol), are associated with blockage of the arteries to the heart.

Polycystic ovary syndrome linked to higher risk of heart disease
By Michele Dula Baum CNN.com Health and Food Writer (CNN) Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome may also have a higher risk of heart disease, according to a new study. "Because it appears that PCOS may cause atherosclerosis, these women may represent the largest female group at high risk for the development of early onset coronary artery disease," said Evelyn Talbott, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. "It is important for physicians to recognize these symptoms as signs of a broader, chronic disorder and treat it accordingly, with early lifestyle interventions and/or medications that will reduce cardiovascular disease risks."

Background
Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease involving all the major arteries including those of the heart, brain, kidneys, and extremities. PARC is a non-profit research organization of physicians with expertise in interventional cardiology, vascular surgery and vascular medicine that have a special interest in the study and development of new strategies to treat peripheral atherosclerosis.
Our Goals
To conduct multicenter clinical trials of endovascular and pharmacologic therapies for peripheral artery atherosclerosis. To facilitate rapid enrollment of patients to address important clinical problems. To disseminate and increase knowledge about peripheral atherosclerosis and its treatment, both to physicians and to patients

What is atherosclerosis?
The term artheriosclerosis is a basic one for several different diseases. Learn what they are and what can be done!
The term arteriosclerosis is a basic one for several different diseases that create a situation where the artery walls become less elastic and thicker. Of these diseases the most common is atherosclerosis which occurs when fatty materials tend to accumulate beneath the inner lining of an arterial wall. People who have high blood pressure, are cigarette smokers, diabetics and have levels of cholesterol that are high are at a greater risk of developing this disease. Other factors may include obesity, advancing age and lack of exercise. Prevention of this disease can be aided by eliminating the controllable risk factors. When this disease becomes serious enough to cause complications it can lead to heart attacks, kidney failure, abnormal heart rhythms, stroke, obstructed peripheral arteries, heart failure and angina. bodyOffer(17646) In most cases atherosclerosis does not produce symptoms until an artery is severely narrowed or a sudden obstruction occurs. Then the symptoms will depend on where the disease has developed. In this part of the body pain or cramps may occur during exercise. When this occurs it is because the area of the body that is affected is not receiving enough blood and oxygen. Examples of this would be chest pain during exercise or leg cramps while walking. In most cases these symptoms tend to develope slowly as the artery narrows but if an obstruction occurs such as a blood clot lodged in an artery, the symptoms may appear suddenly.
