Secondhand Smoke Causes Women Decreased Lung Function Secondhand smoke causes decreased lung function in women, especially those with asthma, according to a study presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference in Atlanta on Tuesday. The study of more than 10,000 adults, 440 of whom had asthma, found secondhand smoke did not affect the lung function of men.
"Among females with and without asthma, we found that the greater their exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, the lower their lung function," said Mark Eisner, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. "The effect was greatest in women with asthma their chronic airway inflammation makes them even more susceptible to the effects of secondhand smoke." He noted that men were more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke at work, while women were more likely to breathe in secondhand smoke at home. "It's possible that men who are more sensitive to environmental tobacco smoke can more easily avoid it at work, while women can't avoid secondhand smoke at home," he said. "Or there may be a biological difference between men and women, such as women's smaller airways, which causes them to be more affected by smoke." Dr. Eisner said that healthcare professionals who care for people with asthma should assess if patients are exposed to smoke and counsel them to avoid exposure.

Asthma
Asthma is inflammation of the tubes of the lungs which causes them to be obstructed, and therefore air passes though them less easily.
Symptoms
The main symptoms are:
  • Difficulty breathing or "shortness of breath", associated with a "tight" feeling. This may be associated with exercise, come on at night, or on exposure to various external stimuli.
  • Audible wheeze is often present.
  • Cough may be the main symptom in some children.
Causes
The cells in the lungs react to various irritants such as:
  • Substances to which the individual is allergic ( allergens ) eg house dust mite, cat/dog fur, horses, pollen.
  • Chemical irritants , eg cigarette/tobacco smoke, pollutants from factories and car exhausts, household cleaners and sprays, perfumes, etc.
  • Low temperatures.
  • Exercise.
This causes the tubes in the lungs to narrow which results in difficulty breathing. Asthma frequently runs in families and is closely associated with hayfever and eczema . Sometimes other members of the family will have asthma, hayfever, or eczema, or combinations of these. It is essentially caused by an allergic type of reaction of the immune system. Sometimes the irritants which set off the reaction are not strictly allergens but chemical irritants eg smoke, some fumes. In families with a strong history of this sort of condition, the genes which cause asthma are probably in place from birth, but the condition is activated by outside factors. These factors may include excessive exposure to house dust mites or smoke in the first few months of life, illness eg a severe infection, or exposure to irritant chemicals. There are various theories about why asthma is becoming more common, but some of these require more work to confirm or refute them.
