Inhalers and asthma deaths
FROM Inhalers and asthma deaths: Samy Suissa, M.D., of Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, and colleagues analyzed a database of more than 30,000 people between ages 5 and 44 who were prescribed anti-asthma drugs between 1975 and 1991. People in the study who died had used fewer canisters of inhaled corticosteroids, generally beclomethasone (Becloforte Inhaler, Vanceril), than those who were still alive. For each additional canister used by participants during the previous year, the risk of death decreased by 21 percent.

Introduction to Asthma Symptoms Triggers Allergies and Asthma ... Frequently Asked Questions Although asthma is very common, it is not well understood. Today, treatments for asthma are more effective and easier to tolerate than ever. In the next 10 years, it is hoped that advances in medical research will lead to even better treatments. This site is designed to help you learn about asthma, its causes, and its treatment.
General Introduction
top Healthy lungs are essential to feeling good. The lungs are the organs we use to breathe. They work by taking oxygen from the air we breathe in and then exchanging it for carbon dioxide, a deadly waste product made by the cells of the body. Once this exchange has taken place, we can then get rid of the carbon dioxide by breathing it out, or exhaling. Whatever your race, it is important for all people with asthma to develop a plan for controlling asthma attacks. By noticing warning signs and acting on them, you or your child may be able to avoid a serious episode of asthma. There are some special concerns for African Americans and Hispanic Americans with Asthma....

Asthma is a disease that affects the lungs and the airways that deliver air to the lungs. It causes periodic attacks of wheezing and difficult breathing. An asthma attack occurs when the airways become inflamed in response to a trigger, such as dust, mold, pets, exercise, or cold weather. However, some attacks start for no apparent reason. Triggers may inflame the airways to the lungs, allowing disease-fighting cells to accumulate and causing swelling in the lungs. In addition, the airways may become blocked or obstructed when the muscles surrounding the lungs tighten or go into spasm. This keeps air from circulating freely in the lungs. Or, mucus may clog and narrow the airways in the lungs, making breathing even more difficult.

Citation information Asthma is a "respiratory disease in which spasm and constriction of the bronchial passages and swelling of their mucous lining cause obstruction of breathing, often due to allergy, particularly to dust, animal fur or feathers, molds, and pollen." Many people with allergic asthma, also called atopic or extrinsic asthma, also suffer from hay fever. Asthma in adults is less likely to be caused by allergy, and more likely to be associated with respiratory infections and emotional upsets. Nonallergic asthma is called intrinsic asthma (Encarta 1994). Asthma and allergies are also related because both seem to be a defensive response gone wrong. Interestingly, 3,000 - 4,000 Americans die from asthma each year and the numbers are increasing (Edleson 24). Asthma is not a fun disease to have because of asthma attacks. An asthma attack is when the muscles that line an asthmatic's bronchi - the tubes that carry air to a person's lungs - have spasms that make the bronchi contract, thus reducing the amount of air coming in and out of the body. Exercise can trigger an asthma attack. This can be carefully controlled with a regimen of exercise and drug treatment which will keep the asthma symptoms to a minimum (Encarta 1994). Asthma is also not fun to have because of the long process that the doctor has to go through to diagnose it. First, the doctor will want to know about the patient's family medical history. Next, he/she will need to learn about any personal medical problems and history. This is necessary so he/she will not provide a misdiagnosis. He/she will probably focus on respirtory problems when looking into the patient's history. He/she will want to know what happens before and after the patient's bouts of asthma-like symptoms. Then, the doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to wheezes in the patient's breathing. The doctor may want to take X-rays of the patient's chest to determine if his/her lungs look normal or overinflated. Overinflated lungs are one symptom of asthma. Lastly, the doctor may or may not give the patient a skin test for allergies.

Feline Asthma - Updated Information
by Susan Little DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Feline) Feline asthma has been called by many other names, including chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and allergic bronchitis. Regardless of the name, it is a common feline ailment. Inhaled allergens cause sudden contraction of the smooth muscles around airways, leading to typical clinical symptoms. It is usually impossible to determine which allergens cause asthma in individual cats, but common ones include grass and tree pollens, cigarette or fireplace smoke, various sprays (hair sprays, deodorants, flea sprays, deodorizers), and dust from cat litter. Feline asthma is found in all areas of the world and in cats of all ages. The prevalence in the general adult cat population is about 1%. The most common symptoms in cats with asthma are wheezing and coughing. The coughing has been described as a dry, hacking cough that could be confused with gagging or retching. Many cats are misdiagnosed as having hairballs! Paroxysms of coughing occur frequently. In mildly affected cats, coughing and wheezing may occur only occasionally. A few cats with asthma are asymptomatic in between acute and severe bouts of airway constriction. The most severely affected cats have daily coughing and wheezing and many bouts of airway constriction, leading to open-mouth breathing and panting that can be life threatening. The symptoms of asthma can mimic other diseases, such as heartworm, pneumonia and congestive heart failure. A diagnosis is reached by using chest x-rays, a complete blood count, a feline heartworm test, and a techniques to sample cells from the lower airways (transtracheal wash, bronchial wash, or bronchoalveolar lavage). Chest x-rays may be normal in some cats with asthma, while others will have signs of bronchial inflammation, collapse of the right middle lung lobe, and over inflation of the lungs.
