please fill out this feedback form or send us e-mail about this tutorial Asthma is a disease of the respiratory system. Your respiratory system is made up of your nose and mouth, your windpipe (also called your trachea, pronounced tray-key-uh) , your lungs, and a bunch of air tubes (or airways) that connect your nose and mouth with your lungs (these tubes are called bronchi and bronchioles, prounounced bron-kye and bron-key-oles)
People who have asthma sometimes have trouble breathing. When people who have asthma have this trouble breathing, we call it an asthma attack. Lots of people have asthma attacks, even the two girls just below. Click on their pictures to hear what they feel like when they have an asthma attack. http://www.about-asthma.com/
Latest News Childhood and Adult Onset Asthma Symptoms, Causes and Risks
This site looks at the causes, symptoms and risks associated with asthma. It also explores the increasing occurrence of various types including childhood and adult onset asthma
What is Asthma?
In response to a trigger the air tubes of the lungs become narrower or completely blocked due to inflammation thus restricting normal breathing. In severe cases, this narrowing can lead to death. The condition affects the bronchi or bronchioles (airways); it does not affect the lungs' air sacs. Narrowing results when the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and the muscles surrounding the airways contract. Despite its worrying implications, however, with proper treatment, the condition is both controllable and reversible.
Cause for Concern
Fact: asthma is on the increase. Today, in the United States and Australia, an estimated five percent of adults and ten percent of children suffer from the condition. In the UK, the number of new cases of adult onset and childhood asthma amount to a total of nearly three million people (around five percent of the British population).
Increased air pollution and other factors associated with 21st Century lifestyles have resulted in an alarming escalation in the number of newly diagnosed cases of bronchial asthma
New Departures in Asthma Research
According to Dr. Robert Youngson, an authority on respiratoy disorders, research into the mechanisms that can cause the condition has revealed that, in the allergic type, blood cells called eosinophils can release highly irritating substances that cause inflammation of the air tube linings. In the non-allergic type, however, helper T-cells are also present, along with eosinophils. Until this discovery, helper T-cells had not been associated with the causes of asthma.

1. What Is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic lung condition. It is characterized by difficulty in breathing. People with asthma have extra sensitive or hyperresponsive airways. How Do I Find an Allergist?
    Allergist Locator
One method is only a few mouse clicks away. By entering a zip code or a city, state and street address on the Allergist Locator , you will be given a list of up to eight nearby allergists, their addresses and phone numbers and the driving distance to each office. The Allergist Locator also will draw a map of the locations of the allergists. The map can be manipulated by zooming in on a neighborhood street grid or out to view the entire region. You can print out both the list and the map. Telephone Referral
The ACAAI also operates a nationwide allergist referral service. Callers to the toll-free number can receive by mail the names, addresses and telephone numbers of board-certified allergists who practice in their vicinity. A board-certified allergist has completed a three-year residency training program in either internal medicine or pediatrics, followed by a two- or three-year program of study in the field of allergy and immunology. They also have passed a qualifying examination to earn certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology. For ACAAI membership information, please contact:
